I've been trying to train my border collie mix to get in his in-flight carrier for the holidays. I've started feeding him out of his carrier, but he just reaches in to get the treat with his butt sticking out. Is there a good way to convince him to go in and turn around? Thanks!
OK, I tried this yesterday, except with a bike trailer I just got off eBay. I've not got my pup yet so I tried it with a friend's dog I've never worked with before, and she took to it straight away. She obviously thought it was a great little den, because when we went upstairs later she saw the puppy crate and was desperate to get in, lol!
I like this idea! But I am not sure if they can breath inside a purse. =(
[ i once had a pet mouse who know how to get in my backpack and he is not afraid of it. I didn't train him to do it but he loves going inside. But once, my lil' bro left him in his back pack for 10-15 mins and then found that my mouse died inside.=( ]
So..... I just want to notify people not to leave your dog or any animal inside a purse for a very long period of time.
@NormyPie I use "ok" with my dogs, but when I talk to a group of people as a teacher I say "Ok, now we are going to do this and that..." or I will say "ok..." while Im thinking of the next trick to do with one dog, while the other is lying down... and the dog gets up... ! So with Tug I am using "Free!".
I trained Noodle to get in his bag yesterday and was very pleased that he stayed calmly in it the whole time we were out walking (still need to work on the standing around stuff). Today we had a fantastic training session with the bike trailer. He was catching on very quickly so I raised the criteria quickly too - sniffing the trailer, touching it, putting paws in, getting in, getting in and sitting, staying in whilst I move it etc. Not hooked up to bike yet - next session!
Thanks a lot! my mom got my pup a hard crate...and i started some of your tips prior to seeing this video. So you other tip about the option to stay is great
AWESOME. Do you have any advice on potty training. Yesterday i got two chihuahuas. they are 4 months and five days old. they aren't potty trained and i have no idea as to how to train them. Is it to late for them? i really need all the help i can get. thanks for any help or addvice you have. Oh, does it take a long time?
One more thing, i would like for them to go potty outside.
very nice, emily kikopup. Not applicable maybe for my akita and rotty (picture that!) , but fun to watch nevertheless (and i can substitute 'crate' for 'purse').
thanx for another great vid. We've only got to get a bag & Milo leaps in!! Our chi dogs seemed to be naturally curious to get inside ANY bag. Comment for sharonmtucker: it's all about positive reinforcement & making it fun. Love seeing the awesome Kiko & Splash.
5* for another awesome tutorial:)! Kiko really loves going into bags:). Seeing Splash go in the bag was so cute! Then you were able to lift her too! I probably would not have been able to lift Kaine since he is 83 lbs!
It would be very helpful to see you do some of this training with a dog that has not yet been trained. It would help us understand how long it takes and what it looks like when it's going well or not so well.
You can edit the vid down so it's not 3 days long...lol. Thanks.
Great video! My puppy used to not mind being in a bag, but I haven't used one lately as I'm trying to socialize her more with new people. This might come in handy though when I want to start bringing her places in a bag again. Thank you!
Oh I love how you work with your dogs! And I love Kiko! I tink I am going to try that purse thing with my Border Collie later. Not that its necessary, but it looks like a lot of fun :) Thank you for this tutorial!
That's really great! Your tips are useful and encouraging. Thank you for your work, you've saved my dog from lots of nervous days and useless violent trainings.
Now I mostly stop being nervous and let him be, because it doesn't help. I understand that it's my duty to teach him a needed behaviour first instead of being annoyed by his normal one.
haha, "If you're one of those impatient people". . . um, guilty!
In my opinion, learning to teach and train my pup has been one of the best lessons in patience I have ever experienced. . . and you have been instrumental in the training of ME! xo
In Brazil, we have little literature on clicker training. Therefore, your videos have helped me a lot, even not speaking English I can learn a lot. Thank you. 5 *
i cant wait to try this. thanks to you my nacho is now crate trained and he LOVES being in his crate at night (i dont even have to close the door,he stays in it on his own)
ah, I so want a little dog, kiko is so sweet!!!! I miss my Westie so much! I love this video Emily, Kiko really truly loves to be in her crate/bag, I found to my surprise that my dogs don't even mind wearing clothes when you take this approach, in fact Holly LOVES to wear her t-shirt! it's great what positive training can do :-) I love the 3 step guide, I used this on my latest video too :-) it made me lol when Splash got into the bag!! too cute!!!! 5* as always for a wonderful video.
I do love having my little dog, but if you ever get one, I suggest you get a furry one! Mine lives in Southern California and SHIVERS year round when shes not on her heating pad!

Are there air vents in the purses you are using? slightly concerned someone might use something where the dog can't breath.

I was wondering why you say 'OK' is not a good word? Is it because it's so commonly said?
