  • A proper slow gait is actually very smooth.

  • The slow gait is actually very comfortable and both the slow gait and rack are natural gaits of the american saddlebred, they are just enhanced. Also, the "pacing" horse was trotting.

  • Very good video...

  • and forget that they only show the running walk with a horse that has been sored! It's painful to watch! The running walk is entirely natural and has been around since the existance of the naragaset pacer, an ancient ancestor of the walker.

  • The narrator never gets around to defining actual artificial gaits, nor does she show or describe any examples of artificial gaits. The whole "artificial gaits" clip is about gaits native to the breeds shown. She also fails to note that the slow gait is a stepping-pace, as per USEF rules. Finally, the slow-motion view of the pacing horse clearly shows, as does high-speed and stop-action photography, that all pacers have a break between the hind and front feet landing, a fast 1-2, not 1-1.

  • Peruvian Paso horses do a natural broken 4 beat pace gait vs a true 2 beat pace. It is called "paso llano". If they tend more to pace side of gaiting, then it is called "sobreandando". A true pace is called "andadura", but they should do the broken 4 beat forms.

The Paso Fino also do a broken 4 beat pace gait called a "paso corto" and "paso fino". Some also will trot depending on blood lines. Some can also do a true pace at times, but this is not desired.

  • The first horse and buggy doing the "pace" at "2:21" is actually trotting, not pacing.
