I'm Twelve and i have to get this done I really don't want it done any advise? I really wish I didn't have to get this done I'm just scared about the results!
I'm having this done Monday...I've had to wait 2 months for my appt because of the holidays so I'm (almost!!) over being nervous about it because I'm so ready to get it over with. More than anything I'm nervous that they'll say it's nothing to worry about..I used to sing and now I can barely TALK but they said nodules this small (1.7cm) wouldn't typically cause symptoms. Did you have any symptoms before they discovered your nodule(s)?
I'm sorry you're having trouble talking and singing. I used to sing too. My nodule was discovered when I was diagnosed with thyroid disease: Hashimoto's thyroiditis -- a pretty common form of hypothyroidism. The nodule doesn't have anything to do with it. So I did have some symptoms, but they were related more to the thyroid disease. I wish you luck with your upcoming biopsy. Please let me know how it goes!
Had this done 3hrs ago and it really felt a lot less uncomfortable than the video appears. But then I read some comments and apparently it can go either way.. for me there was very little pain, just a slight pressure and only the 3rd of the 3 done registered pain at all but again, very little. Took the band aid off on the way home, no bruising and feels ok now. Was ultrasound aided, took a few minutes, I spoke between each needle, my nodule is 1cm and can't be felt by hand.
Having my first-ever biopsy tomorrow. I'm pretty nervous, but more because, you know, they're looking for cancer, than because of the needles! Luckily my husband's coming with me, but he gets queasy around needles, so I may end up having to comfort him, haha! Thanks for sharing your experience with us; you're a champ!
I had this also my DR didn't numb my neck, he did it by himself, no nurse, & asked me to help him (without surgical gloves) This girl is talking !! my DR didn't let me to breath deep, asked me to not make any little noise! & stay still ( not move at all) it was a real nightmare.
I had it done on wed and now my whole left side is swollen and I cant eat or drink anything....probably goin into the er tomorrow also feels like there is constant phlegm or pus that i have to cough up
I had it done today - they took 5 needle biopsies and it DID hurt and it was very uncomfortable. My nodule was deep and difficult to get to so that is probably why my experiences was so negative. And now (3 hours later) it feels like something is in my throat every time I swallow and it hurts my neck to move my head much. I'm sure I will survive though....
I'm gettingthis don in 2 weeks and I'msooooo cared... don't wanna see the needle at all!!! I can't stand needles!!! any advice on how to keep calm? I'm probably gonna start crying when I see the needle.... :'(
Tell your doctor how nervous you are. Ask him to make sure he doesn't flash the needle in your face, but as a precaution, just close your eyes. Deep breaths. Remind yourself that it will be over very quickly. Think about how happy you'll be when it's done. I suffer from anxiety disorder/panic attacks, so if I can get through it, so can you. Please check back and let us know how you did. Good luck!
My doctor does numb the area, which helps. I'm not sure that every doctor does so. Your cousin could request that the doctor use lidocaine (numbing agent), just in case. Good luck to her!
My best friend was diagnosed with a large thyroid nodule two years but she's self employed and uninsured. Nobody wants to help her and since she's an American citizen and she owns a car, she can't qualify for any county or state programs.
Apparently if you are an illegal or a refugee you can get Medi-Cal (Medicaid in California) but if you are a citizen you just twist in the wind till ya die.
I too will have this done...... I am a nurse also...but the thought a a needle in my needle makes me ill to my stomach. I see the girl in the video is talking... On a scale of 1-10..how much did it hurt? be honest... was it done at the doctors office? thanks so much
@cabin1994 Honestly, I wouldn't describe the experience as painful. It was uncomfortable and felt very strange, but it was not painful. Yes, it was done at my doctor's office. Good luck to you!
Thanks for posting this video! I've been obsessed with researching thyroid nodules...I had a FNA on Monday (not US guided.. that's next). Did you happen to notice the colour of the fluid they aspirated? Was it reddish? That's what I am obsessed about! The bloody fluid...! Thanks again for being so candid and posting this.
@kayk734 You're very welcome! I'm glad it's been of some help to people. Yes, the fluid extracted during my FNA was indeed bloody -- with PIECES! Pieces of tissue, I suppose. I was kind of sorry I'd looked. Good luck to you!
@jcfo Eeesh... Yep, I was pausing the video over and over trying to see what was in the syringe.. It did look red. I've looked through all the comments, but I haven't seen was your diagnosis was, that is, if you even wanted to share.. Is everything OK?
@kayk734 I'm happy to say my results were negative. I will probably have to have an FNA every few years because my nodule is suspicious, but I'm not too worried.
@jcfo That's great news, I'm happy to hear that. My doctor, before even getting any results, wants to remove my right thyroid. If it comes back malignant, he'll remove the entire thyroid. It's a pretty aggressive approach, but at this point, I'll do anything to be on the safe side! Thanks again for sharing, and all the best to you.
@kayk734 If nodule is complex, then the ultrasound guiding is a must! if regular cytology will fail to determine if cancer is present the new molecular testing method can be used to estimate cancer probability. Good luck!
I do not have an account so I am using my son's. I watched the video because I am having the biopsy done May 10th. I am so scared of the biopsy and of results. I have to say reading the comments have helped a lot. Was your neck sore for a great amount of time after the biopsy? I wish everyone luck!!
Hi, there! No, my neck really didn't hurt much at all. The places where the needle was inserted (several different places but all pretty close together) were a little sore for just that day. And I think I had a tiny bruise there too. Good luck! Let us know how it went.
I just had this procedure done today. It was no big deal! They sprayed my neck with a numbing spray that felt very cold. I felt a slight prick and a little pressure and that was it. A regular shot hurts worse. Don't be worried if you have to have this done....now I just have to wait for the results.
Thanks for posting this video. I have to have this procedure done and I'm scared as heck. I couldn't watch the entire video but what I did see didn't look that bad.
I had an FNA about 2 weeks ago. It was not as horrific as I anticipated. I felt two quick bee sting pricks on my neck to numb it. After the initial anesthesia shots, I simply felt an uncomfortable pressure for a brief moment. My results were benign. The worst part of this process was the anxiety I experienced prior to the procedure.
I'm sorry to hear that you are having surgery, but it's the best thing. My heart was pumping hard and now I'm great!!! No worries here. I got a clean scan:)
this may sound stupid but why dont they just open her neck and remove it completely instead of risking the possible spread of cancer due to the biopsy
@kevindelgado20 Main reason is because differentiating between benign and malignant may be done with accuracy with thyroid biopsy. Most nodules turn out to be benign, but this is only confirmed by the biopsy. Most benign nodules need not be removed. Remember surgery may have its complications. The biopsy also helps differ between types of thyroid tumors, which defines the caracteristics of the surgery (extent, aproach, etc.)
my sis had this done and result was of undetermined signifivcance they said the only option to see if it was cancer was to remove her thyroid is this true or are there other options thanks
My maternal grandmother had a thyroid nodule the size of a clementine removed recently. Since the removal, she has had a much stronger voice than ever.
I've had this procedure done four times. The first time didn't hurt because she numbed it up really good. The second time he said that H only numbs the skin and so I felt the whole thing. The thiird time I asked if he would numb the whole thing and he said he would and did. This last time he wasn't going to numb anything up and I said, I've had this done thrree times I know it can be numbed, either numb it or forget it. He numbed it
Sorry to say but I have Cancer. 24 lymph nodes were taken and 9 of them cancer cells. I now need radiation. No big deal really. I am stage 1, and so far I am healing very fast. Went shopping 3 days after surgery...LOL..I am a tough cookie.
@6katchitchat Oh, no. I'm so sorry to hear that. But it sounds like you have a great attitude. VERY glad to hear you're already on the mend! You go, you tough cookie!
I am 13, have 3 thyroid nodules and have since i was 6. the doctors want to do a biopsy and this video just scared the crap out of me! i am soooo nervous and i was wondering if the numbed the area, or if it hurts?
@irishnprd22 I've had this done 4 times. The first time the doc didn't numb the area, because, as he explained, it's just one more needle you have to deal with. Made sense. And the fine needle didn't really hurt -- just felt weird and a little uncomfortable. The next times I had it done, the doctor (a different one) did use Lidocaine to numb the area. And that really didn't hurt much either. And it's over very quickly! Good luck!
@irishnprd22 Hi, I just got mine done this afternoon, and I like you had watched this video and had wished I hadn't. But it's not bad at all, the worst part is a little sting that you get with the little shot to deaden the procedure. You will do fine, and please get it done, it could save your life! God bless you! :) I promise it isn't bad at all. :)
I had my surgery! It went well. I am on day 4! I feel great. I have been shopping and now able to talk pretty good!! The cut is about 2 inches...and he said he got it all. I am still waiting for tests results to confirm. Thank you so much for all your support:))
YAY! I'm so happy it's done and it went well! And you're up and about -- that's awesome! I'm sure your test results will confirm that you are CANCER-FREE! Thanks so much for the update, and congratulations!!!
@6katchitchat I came across your video, thank you for the information. I see you are feeling well. I hope you will heal well. Tomorrow I am having my thyroid removed, your information has calmed me down so much.
@6katchitchat I'm so sorry. I will be thinking of you and hoping for the best. PLEASE check back after your surgery, if you feel like it. Best wishes.
I found this by a fluke. My doctor told me she is pulling out the big guns and will not watch it. She wants to know what it is, and wants answers. I am thankful that she is aggressive. I think you shouldn't watch it unless you know for sure what it is. I have had rapid heart rate, night sweats, and not able to sleep. All classic symptoms. I have read too that 95 % are nothing. only 5% are cancer. I know I have great odds. Even if I am in the 5% I know that treatment is out there.
I just found a nodule located on my thyroid. I am 43 years old, female, and FREAKED out! I went to the internet and found out what it could be. So far the ultrasound said that is a nodule and to follow up with doctor. Why can't they see what it is?? Like cancer?? Cyst ?? I would need to be put under for this procedure...I HATE needles. I can't do it!! I am already in a state of panic.
Hey, there! Please don't panic. I am not in any way trained to dole out medical advice, but I do know that thyroid nodules are VERY common and about 95% are benign. At least, that's what I've been told by my doctor. I know it sucks having to wait after getting news like that, but the doctor may not even do anything but keep an eye on it via ultrasound.
Please check back and tell us how you're doing. Good luck!
Wow u actually made a vid! I had mine today. It ws n da right center... Nd da doc tld me one thing " u dont wanna see this" she was right! Seeing u i can feel the pain ! Wow.... I went thru that? She poked the needle in three tyms..
Dear jcfo Im 15 male and have had swollen lymph nodes for three years and have gone through blood tests mri's and my doc is finally wanting to do a biopsy on one of five swollen nodes monday the 16th and im extremely nervous and this prepared me for wat i was in for i sincerely appreciate this video and apparently many others have as well I wish u the best and again thank YOU. :-)
Hi, there! Thanks so much for taking the time to write a comment. I'm really glad this video helped you. Best of luck with your procedure. Let us know how it goes!
Just got back from mine. Not as bad as I thought, but not fun either. It's basically like giving blood 4 times in a row from your neck - 4 needle entries. They don't hurt terribly, but with each one, it becomes more sore and uncomfortable for the next one. I had the option of a numbing agent, but it tends to burn upon entry to the blood stream so I opted not to use it. And what's up with this chick being able to talk and laugh?! I was told to refrain from all speaking and swallowing.
I didn't want to watch but I'm glad I did. If I ever need to get one it's nice to know that someone laughed through the procedure. Thanks for showing this!
@redheadshesaid Thanks for watching! I know it's kind of squirmy, but I hope to show that it's really mostly just a little uncomfortable. If you have a good doctor who knows what he's doing, it shouldn't be painful. And it's over very quickly.
I just had this procedure done yesterday(05/03/10) It wasn't bad at all. The worst part was the shock to numb you and it was like a tiny bee sting. Seriously!! It went really fast and they iced it immediately after to reduce swelling and bruising. This morning I had a small bruise and it hurts a little to cough and yawn, but that's pretty much it. Nothing to worry about at all. Make sure you go to an actual surgeon.
can somebody tell me how long it take to get the results back ? i have to get this done in a couple of days but my medicaid is only good until the last day of march so just wondering ?
Oy! This does not look exciting. I've already had blood tests, ultrasound, scan and uptake...and now I have to go in for this too. My uptake showed something "suspicious". I'm not liking that word. I'm crossing my fingers that I it's not too bad, and I'm also thinking it's HIGHLY unlikely that anyone would smile as much as that cheesy lady the whole time.
I got 3 of those procedures done, and the first time I cried :/ I hate needles, especially ones that plunge into your neck. My results always came back with "suspicious for malignancy," so hopefully you'll be fine.
@Kstantanople Basically, the biopsy is recommendded if the nodule is larger then 1 cm and has blood flow inside. Even with "suspicious" features that mean microcalcification, irregular borders and internal blood flow the odds of having cancer is no more then 22%.
just got one done a few hours ago. It honestly doesnt hurt much at all..just really uncomfortable because you can feel it when they extract it but it doesnt hurt. Just waiting for the local anesthetic to wear off now. Hope it wont hurt and bruise that much
I had this done three days ago and I am still sore. It was ultrasound guided and the Dr. (or whatever he was) stabbed at me like he was preforming liposuction. I had to stay still and there was a loud sound when my tissue was clutched. I look like a deranged vampire attacked me. I did have local anesthetic but it was very, very uncomfortable. I think it depends on the skill of the person doing it. The nurse was very nice. The results were inconclusive. I will NOT let them touch me again.
Well, It honestly didn't hurt too much. The Dr used some type of freezing spray on my skin, but didn't do anything for under the skin. It didn't hurt but was very uncomfortable, lots of pressure, and I'm pretty sore (12 hrs later). I have 3 large nodules and 1 small one. They sampled the 3 larger ones, so they did 3 separate biopsies. The initial results were good, but will hear labs tomorrow.
I'm having this done tomorrow morning. I was having problems swallowing food back in November. My Dr felt a nodule on my thyroid and the next week after that I had a sonogram. They found "multiple nodules" with the sonogram. I was concerned with the biopsy but this video made me a little more at ease. I'm not really afraid of needles, I donate blood, I have a tattoo, but for some reason this freaks me out. I'll post tomorrow after the procedure for a first hand account!
I will have this done in May 2010 cause I had a thyroid sonogram done and I have 2solid nodules, one is 9mm and the other is 7mm. Is this big? Taking meds now,
in most cases anything that less then 10 mm considered small; if no blood flow is detected inside the nodule using Doppler color flow, the biopsy may not be necessary.
I'm a surgical nurse and one of my specialties is endocrine, we do at least 20 thyroid biopsies in one day. I don't know what was going on in this video, but our biopsies are not this brutal looking! A patient told me about this vid and I had to look it up. Your nodules are about the size of a penny, very small. It's not a bad procedure. Takes 10 minutes at the most; it actually takes longer to prep the patient and set up the supplies. You might have slight bruising and tenderness. Good luck!
omg i had a thyroid tumor back in september im so happy they didnt do a biopsy. i got it taken out oct. 1st 3 1/2 inches big no cancer most people are shocked b/c im only 14.
I really don't understand her laughing and talking while having it done. I have one every year and am not aloud to even swallow much less joke around. I have never had anything at all to numb me so maybe she has had something really good and feels nothing. It isn't a great thing to have but definitely worth it to know what you're dealing with.
I had this done a couple of months ago and have to have it done again... if they get the same results (atypical cells) they want to remove the cyst... boo.
I have to agree - it seems like the doc moved the needle around a lot in this vid - for me it was a lot quicker. Hurt for about a week afterwards.
pls tell whats a PEI procedure..because i was adised to undergo a biopsy by my doctor..my right lobe was 3.5 and im 22 yrs old..pls help me ..i dont want to go for a biopsy..ill wait for your reply..thanx a lot..godbless..
Just had this done today (6 mm) and the only pain was the anesthetic injection. It's 3 hours later now and a little sore but not too bad. She isn't supposed to laugh or breathe while the needle in in there, let alone laugh. Also, what is so funny? I wasn't laughing. But yeah they have to vigorously move the needle up and down to get fluid from the cyst into the tiny needle.
Aside from the waiting and prep time, the actual procedure only takes like 10 minutes. The length of time is short and the pain is minimal to non-existent. It really is only a mild soreness after the numbing agent wears off. Other than the procedure itself being weird, it really is short and painless.
I became nauseous looking at this film! First of all, NO aseptic technique? Where's the betadine swab? Where are the sterile gloves? Also, observe this woman laughing. How can she do that while having a needle thrusting a lump in her neck? I am having this procedure done tomorrow for a 12mm nodule. The doctor told me, "it's nothing." After reading some of the comments here, I hope he's right. I'm a little scared.
I had this done a month ago - not too bad, got the spins during the 4th needle stick, probably from having to hold my breath. Results: Benign. Nontheless advised to have the whole thing out. Post-op pathology report: it was cancer after all.
But the surgery wasn't bad, recovery has been quick. Feeling fine, taking Synthroid not a big deal either.
Oooh. That doc is going to town with that needle! Looks painful but the patient is laughing so it must not be too bad. I am going to be having one of these soon. I have an appt. with a throat specialist tomorrow. I have 1.2 cm mass which is causing me discomfort and sometimes feels like I have a fishing lure logdged between my trachea and esphagus.
Well I have an Endocrine appt tomorrow I was told I hve a Thyroid nodule. Not looking fwd to it I want to know what is is. Definitely nervious. Scared Shitless of cancer. Praying it isnt!!! My aunt and all the women in my fam once they hit age 30 have these and they have all been benign hope I am one of the blessed onez too!!!
I had this done about ten days ago. Benign! Yahooooo!!! I still need half my Thyroid out. I hear it will get too big and it gets bigger as you get older. I have heard of thyroids getting so big that they take over major cities! Just like Godzilla!
I must agree with the positive comments. I had a fine needle biopsy after an ultrasound scan this week (UK). Hardly felt a thing - just one very slight pin prick. I too was told not to swallow or talk. Only took a minute or so. Please do not be anxious if you have to undergo this procedure.
Just had this done at hospital with ultrasound guidance. Doctor was very gentle, recommended against a numbing shot because that would hurt more than the biopsy needle itself, which is very fine. I was told not to talk/swallow/move while the Dr. went in, and the pathologist in the room checked the sample to verify that it was large enough to get a good read, so the Dr. only had to go in once. Virtually painless, more anxiety than pain. If you are having this procedure, don't worry!!
I've had it done twice as the result was inconclusive but suspicious.
Now the second result's back and the slides were no good, just dilute blood, so got to go for a third i guess. Luckily it's no big deal, just a little prick.......several times.
As a matter of interest, I paid under $50 for the FNA and pathology in the most expensive hospital in Chiangmai Thailand......what is it in the criminally overpriced USA?
this video makes the procedure look much worse than it is... close your eyes, distract yourself, and you'll barely feel it. the entire thing takes two minutes.
I too thought you weren't supposed to talk or breathe during this!!! I read that you have to hold your breath..I have to have this done :( I'm so NOT looking forward to it :( I'm scared out of my mind. I already had the radioactive iodine scan, ultrasound....and now I have to do this.
I just had that done a few hours ago... I was very very very very very nervous. I cried and cried before and during the numbing shot.. my god that shot hurt so bad, i started kicking and screaming.
but after that, the passes were pain free.. and i'm just having some pain (feels like bruising) when i talk/eat/ move my head.
Nurses were very kind to me and tried to be as gentle as possible.
I had this done to verify for thyroid cancer a number of years ago. It's very interesting to be on the observation side of this procedure! Thanks for uploading this vid.
Ugh I have to probably get this done soon as well, I go tomorrow for a nuclear medicine scan for my thyroid because I have a mass in my right nodule that they are afraid could be cancerous, and its growing more and more as each day passes and I am in alot of pain
so probably after this nuclear medicine scan, if they find a cold nodule, they will probably do biopsy, oh great. I am not looking forward to it :(
I found 2 bumps on my throat i went in to see my Doc,he booked a biopsy.I have to say that i am sorry regardless of how..
Sm0kingDawg has explained the Proper procedure of a fine needle throat biopsy...I have called my Doctor's office to cancel...when my doctor told me i had to have a biopsy my anxiety kicked in watching this video and reading the comments has made it all that more difficult the nightmares of this procedure that ive had will now be more visually truamatic. I CAN NOT DO THIS
It is ok, my doctor also recommended the procedure for me on July 27 2009, I am worry a little-pit but I have to do it, she will give some drug that will make me unaware.
There is no pain management during this procedure, but when done correctly it is supposed to last less than 15min and the pain is only during the insertion of the needle. And of course no "scavenging" with the needle... In, suction, out. Clean, precise and that's it. At least that's how we do it in the hospital I am in. Thyroid is a superficial gland it's not supposed to be that hard...
The proper procedure (by a radiologist -me) : Check patient's INR,PT,aPTT (to see proper blood coagulation), examine thyroid gland with linear head of u/s machine, use the "light"-edge of the head to mark the location of the nodule, carefuly insert the needle next to "light"-edge and track it constantly onscreen, and of course NO laughing, talking or swallowing when needle is in. Indeed recurrent laryngeal nerve may be damaged, or even worse a common carotid artery , trachea etc. Dr N. Greece
OMG. I just had this done today for the second time. The first time was easy. This second biopsy, done by a different doctor, was more traumatic. I have a headache and the right side, where the biopsy was done, is really sore - neck, down the shoulder, even the back of my neck. I hope a nerve wasn't hit.
why would u have this done?? that looks painful......I just had a unltrasound done on my thyroid and there is a cyst on it. I have to be sent to a specialist and my doctor told me that they may have to do something like this. and if so i will not be going. i dont like needles........
moving needle radiarly in a lot of directions is not recommended in doing thyroid FNAB; in one place just axial back and forth minute movements is permitted with continuous control of the suction power usualy less than 2 cc; the patient's nodule seems to be isthmic nearly to the left lobe, and the operator position is visible on the same side; better was with the operator placed otherside to avoid trachea interception (but these are just refinements for pro's); what about ultrasound images?
Ooh, ouch. I'm sorry you had such a painful experience. I honestly don't know what would've caused that, but it sounds like the doctor didn't know what she was doing, and maybe hit a nerve? I hope you feel better.
Thank you, it is worse today , and if it doesn't get better in a few days I will have it checked.. she definitely did damage. I am most concerned with my ear as I am a musician. I stopped her because I knew she did damage. She kept saying I am sorry YOU are in so much pain, Never I'm sorry I hit a nerve or muscle or what ever.. she kept putting it on me.. that really pissed me off.
don't worry the innervation to the ear (VIII) doesn't pass through there . IF happen to injure the recurrent laryngeal nerve you might have hoarseness of your voice if for more than 2 weeks it's permanent neurotamessis /axontamesiss.
I just almost had this done. .no numbing.. and when the needle went in I screamed.. she pulled it out. It hurt all the way up my the side of my neck and into my ear.. I wouldn't let her try it again..
SO did she hit a nerve or a muscle????
This was crazy painful.. it still hurts and it hurts to swallow and talk.. What did this doctor do?? She also did NOT use guided ultra sound.. just looked with it once then stuck the needle in.. My ear still hurts when I swallow... -
Most likely she hit the nerve. this condition may improve within few days, however thereis NO excuse for not using the ultrasound; the sample then may be taken from the wrong area, so the doctor would say: It is inconclusive, let's cut tis out. Find a new doctor!!!
Yes. I think so, I had a headache all night on that side last night, it is worse today, She really bruised something inside of my neck.. My ins won't let me change docs.. so for now it is just a monitor situation, as she will never get her needle close to me again.. thanks for your comforting works!!.. It helps to have confirmation that this was not done correctly.
OH.. she did say let's cut it our. After I asked about anyother options she said well you can have your thyroid removed.. Isn't that a little extreme??? I don't even know if there is a problem.. What an inept
Relax if you're about to have this procedure. The maximum pain is during the numbing process and it subsides quickly. On a scale of 1-10, where 10 is unbearable pain, this pain is a 3.
You will feel pressure as the doctor inserts the needle and collects samples, but it should only feel like someone is pushing on your neck. If the pain is sharp, you will need more local.
The doctor will take 3-4 samples per nodule biopsied and this process can take 30 minutes to an hour.
I had this done the other day. The only pain was from the shot to deaden the area. It was like someone else described here, like fire pouring into the area but it only lasts about 15 seconds. In the room was the Doctor, the Pathologist and an Ultrasound tech who guides the doctor through imaging as to where to place the needle into the nodule. My Doctor went in 4 times for specimen before the pathologist was satisfied with the specimens. I now have to wait 4 days for the results.
I had this test. I did not have ANY pain at all. It was done before I knew it. I'm just waiting for the results...hopefully, good results! If you are going to have this test do not worry.
This was not my experience at all. I was given valium to relax. A topical to numb and then novicain ( which I hardly felt). The whole procedure was realtively painless and very quick. Dont let this video scare you> Do your homework in picking an Endo.
this poor lady. this is the most dodgey and amature way i have ever seen a thyroid bx done before. first we use ultrasound guidence the whole time so we can see exactly where the needle is,secondly the gel all around the area will contaninate the specimen and denature the cells.
this looks a lot more brutal than what it really is in most cases.

Did you have any symptoms before they discovered your nodule(s)?
kristen52888 2 weeks ago
@kristen52888 Hi there!

My mom has a nodule in both of her thyroids, what can it be? shes getting a biopsy soon.

My mom is getting this done tomorrow morning. I am worried. I hope the nodules are benign.

I had it done on wed and now my whole left side is swollen and I cant eat or drink anything....probably goin into the er tomorrow also feels like there is constant phlegm or pus that i have to cough up
pzoo63 5 months ago
I had it done today - they took 5 needle biopsies and it DID hurt and it was very uncomfortable. My nodule was deep and difficult to get to so that is probably why my experiences was so negative. And now (3 hours later) it feels like something is in my throat every time I swallow and it hurts my neck to move my head much. I'm sure I will survive though....

jen90mr 6 months ago
@jen90mr It'll be all right!

On a scale of 1-10..how much did it hurt? be honest... was it done at the doctors office? thanks so much
cabin1994 8 months ago
@cabin1994 Honestly, I wouldn't describe the experience as painful. It was uncomfortable and felt very strange, but it was not painful. Yes, it was done at my doctor's office. Good luck to you!

Thanks for posting this video! I've been obsessed with researching thyroid nodules...I had a FNA on Monday (not US guided.. that's next). Did you happen to notice the colour of the fluid they aspirated? Was it reddish? That's what I am obsessed about! The bloody fluid...! Thanks again for being so candid and posting this.
kayk734 8 months ago
@kayk734 You're very welcome! I'm glad it's been of some help to people. Yes, the fluid extracted during my FNA was indeed bloody -- with PIECES! Pieces of tissue, I suppose. I was kind of sorry I'd looked. Good luck to you!
jcfo 8 months ago
@jcfo Eeesh... Yep, I was pausing the video over and over trying to see what was in the syringe.. It did look red. I've looked through all the comments, but I haven't seen was your diagnosis was, that is, if you even wanted to share.. Is everything OK?
kayk734 8 months ago
@kayk734 I'm happy to say my results were negative. I will probably have to have an FNA every few years because my nodule is suspicious, but I'm not too worried.
jcfo 8 months ago
@jcfo That's great news, I'm happy to hear that. My doctor, before even getting any results, wants to remove my right thyroid. If it comes back malignant, he'll remove the entire thyroid. It's a pretty aggressive approach, but at this point, I'll do anything to be on the safe side! Thanks again for sharing, and all the best to you.
kayk734 8 months ago
@kayk734 If nodule is complex, then the ultrasound guiding is a must! if regular cytology will fail to determine if cancer is present the new molecular testing method can be used to estimate cancer probability. Good luck!

I just had this procedure done today. It was no big deal! They sprayed my neck with a numbing spray that felt very cold. I felt a slight prick and a little pressure and that was it. A regular shot hurts worse. Don't be worried if you have to have this done....now I just have to wait for the results.

6katchitchat 11 months ago
this may sound stupid but why dont they just open her neck and remove it completely instead of risking the possible spread of cancer due to the biopsy
kevindelgado20 1 year ago
@kevindelgado20 Main reason is because differentiating between benign and malignant may be done with accuracy with thyroid biopsy. Most nodules turn out to be benign, but this is only confirmed by the biopsy. Most benign nodules need not be removed. Remember surgery may have its complications. The biopsy also helps differ between types of thyroid tumors, which defines the caracteristics of the surgery (extent, aproach, etc.)

irishnprd22 1 year ago
@irishnprd22 I've had this done 4 times. The first time the doc didn't numb the area, because, as he explained, it's just one more needle you have to deal with. Made sense. And the fine needle didn't really hurt -- just felt weird and a little uncomfortable. The next times I had it done, the doctor (a different one) did use Lidocaine to numb the area. And that really didn't hurt much either. And it's over very quickly! Good luck!

6katchitchat 1 year ago
@6katchitchat
Good luck!

My results always came back with "suspicious for malignancy," so hopefully you'll be fine.
good luck!!
danedane101 1 year ago
@Kstantanople Basically, the biopsy is recommendded if the nodule is larger then 1 cm and has blood flow inside. Even with "suspicious" features that mean microcalcification, irregular borders and internal blood flow the odds of having cancer is no more then 22%.

i had this done in september. it was kinda painful, but not too bad. but my neck did swell up pretty bad afterwards. luckily, it showed no cancer.
bynm 2 years ago
I had this done three days ago and I am still sore. It was ultrasound guided and the Dr. (or whatever he was) stabbed at me like he was preforming liposuction. I had to stay still and there was a loud sound when my tissue was clutched. I look like a deranged vampire attacked me. I did have local anesthetic but it was very, very uncomfortable. I think it depends on the skill of the person doing it. The nurse was very nice. The results were inconclusive. I will NOT let them touch me again.
Jane28G 2 years ago
He probably hit the blood vessel so the sample mainly contained blood instead of nodule tissue; this common mistake leads to incorrect diagnostics.
mkrp4 2 years ago
Well, It honestly didn't hurt too much. The Dr used some type of freezing spray on my skin, but didn't do anything for under the skin. It didn't hurt but was very uncomfortable, lots of pressure, and I'm pretty sore (12 hrs later). I have 3 large nodules and 1 small one. They sampled the 3 larger ones, so they did 3 separate biopsies. The initial results were good, but will hear labs tomorrow.
rsm535 2 years ago
I'm having this done tomorrow morning. I was having problems swallowing food back in November. My Dr felt a nodule on my thyroid and the next week after that I had a sonogram. They found "multiple nodules" with the sonogram. I was concerned with the biopsy but this video made me a little more at ease. I'm not really afraid of needles, I donate blood, I have a tattoo, but for some reason this freaks me out. I'll post tomorrow after the procedure for a first hand account!
rsm535 2 years ago
I will have this done in May 2010 cause I had a thyroid sonogram done and I have 2solid nodules, one is 9mm and the other is 7mm. Is this big? Taking meds now,
Satintigerpr 2 years ago
in most cases anything that less then 10 mm considered small; if no blood flow is detected inside the nodule using Doppler color flow, the biopsy may not be necessary.
mkrp4 2 years ago
I'm a surgical nurse and one of my specialties is endocrine, we do at least 20 thyroid biopsies in one day. I don't know what was going on in this video, but our biopsies are not this brutal looking! A patient told me about this vid and I had to look it up. Your nodules are about the size of a penny, very small. It's not a bad procedure. Takes 10 minutes at the most; it actually takes longer to prep the patient and set up the supplies. You might have slight bruising and tenderness. Good luck!

Just had this done today (6 mm) and the only pain was the anesthetic injection. It's 3 hours later now and a little sore but not too bad. She isn't supposed to laugh or breathe while the needle in in there, let alone laugh. Also, what is so funny? I wasn't laughing. But yeah they have to vigorously move the needle up and down to get fluid from the cyst into the tiny needle.

how many minutes will it take ? i mean the biopsy procedure..i want to know coz iam scheduled for a biopsy..
aphlekristine 2 years ago

I wonder if Cancer is a conspiracy, by the foods or chemicals because it sure is alot of people with these "nodules" popping up!

OH MY GOD. I thought you weren't supposed to TALK or swallow during this thing! Why does she keep talking?!?!?!
tobioholic 2 years ago
You can talk and swallow.. unless the tumor is so large that it affects your airway.. they encouraged me to talk to them while getting the passes

Sm0kingDawg 2 years ago
The proper procedure (by a radiologist -me) : Check patient's INR,PT,aPTT (to see proper blood coagulation), examine thyroid gland with linear head of u/s machine, use the "light"-edge of the head to mark the location of the nodule, carefuly insert the needle next to "light"-edge and track it constantly onscreen, and of course NO laughing, talking or swallowing when needle is in. Indeed recurrent laryngeal nerve may be damaged, or even worse a common carotid artery , trachea etc. Dr N. Greece

I've just had this procedure done, he used ultrasound first and then used 7 needles to obtain samples, but there was no numbing or pain medication!

I have to be sent to a specialist and my doctor told me that they may have to do something like this. and if so i will not be going. i dont like needles........
amers1983 2 years ago
The cyst is going to be aspirated.

moving needle radiarly in a lot of directions is not recommended in doing thyroid FNAB; in one place just axial back and forth minute movements is permitted with continuous control of the suction power usualy less than 2 cc; the patient's nodule seems to be isthmic nearly to the left lobe, and the operator position is visible on the same side; better was with the operator placed otherside to avoid trachea interception (but these are just refinements for pro's); what about ultrasound images?
needleplacer 2 years ago
Ooh, ouch. I'm sorry you had such a painful experience. I honestly don't know what would've caused that, but it sounds like the doctor didn't know what she was doing, and maybe hit a nerve? I hope you feel better.
jcfo 2 years ago
Thank you, it is worse today , and if it doesn't get better in a few days I will have it checked.. she definitely did damage. I am most concerned with my ear as I am a musician. I stopped her because I knew she did damage. She kept saying I am sorry YOU are in so much pain, Never I'm sorry I hit a nerve or muscle or what ever.. she kept putting it on me.. that really pissed me off.
Anyway thanks again.
ADDIElilqueenie 2 years ago
don't worry the innervation to the ear (VIII) doesn't pass through there . IF happen to injure the recurrent laryngeal nerve you might have hoarseness of your voice if for more than 2 weeks it's permanent neurotamessis /axontamesiss.
get well soon

I just almost had this done. .no numbing.. and when the needle went in I screamed.. she pulled it out. It hurt all the way up my the side of my neck and into my ear.. I wouldn't let her try it again..
SO did she hit a nerve or a muscle????
This was crazy painful.. it still hurts and it hurts to swallow and talk.. What did this doctor do?? She also did NOT use guided ultra sound.. just looked with it once then stuck the needle in.. My ear still hurts when I swallow... -
ADDIElilqueenie 2 years ago
Most likely she hit the nerve. this condition may improve within few days, however thereis NO excuse for not using the ultrasound; the sample then may be taken from the wrong area, so the doctor would say: It is inconclusive, let's cut tis out. Find a new doctor!!!
wrr714 2 years ago
ADDIElilqueenie 2 years ago
OH.. she did say let's cut it our. After I asked about anyother options she said well you can have your thyroid removed.. Isn't that a little extreme??? I don't even know if there is a problem.. What an inept

No thryoid biopsy should ever be performed without REAL TIME sonographic guidance. Anything else is substandard care.

does scalp biopsy hurt?
SoulSlayer21 2 years ago
Relax if you're about to have this procedure. The maximum pain is during the numbing process and it subsides quickly. On a scale of 1-10, where 10 is unbearable pain, this pain is a 3.
You will feel pressure as the doctor inserts the needle and collects samples, but it should only feel like someone is pushing on your neck. If the pain is sharp, you will need more local.
The doctor will take 3-4 samples per nodule biopsied and this process can take 30 minutes to an hour.
No worries!
keblev1999 2 years ago
I had this done the other day. The only pain was from the shot to deaden the area. It was like someone else described here, like fire pouring into the area but it only lasts about 15 seconds. In the room was the Doctor, the Pathologist and an Ultrasound tech who guides the doctor through imaging as to where to place the needle into the nodule. My Doctor went in 4 times for specimen before the pathologist was satisfied with the specimens. I now have to wait 4 days for the results.
Angelsing2 3 years ago
I had this test. I did not have ANY pain at all. It was done before I knew it. I'm just waiting for the results...hopefully, good results! If you are going to have this test do not worry.
nanswede 3 years ago
This was not my experience at all. I was given valium to relax. A topical to numb and then novicain ( which I hardly felt). The whole procedure was realtively painless and very quick. Dont let this video scare you> Do your homework in picking an Endo.

this poor lady. this is the most dodgey and amature way i have ever seen a thyroid bx done before. first we use ultrasound guidence the whole time so we can see exactly where the needle is,secondly the gel all around the area will contaninate the specimen and denature the cells.
this looks a lot more brutal than what it really is in most cases.

What I don't understand in WHY these cysts fill up and WHY it happens again. Anyone know?
