personally...if i were depp i would have stuck with Mary Steenburgen cuz she is firstly, much much hotter in the extreme then that retarded looking girl with the short hair, and shes older which means more mature and 3rdly ive been in this position with an older woman only she did realize that our age difference was too huge and she couldnt go on with me anymore, and even though i was heartbroken a bit i came to that realization too. i was 21 and she was 41,but still, she was my first love.

@HeidiB15 for me Leo was an already amzing actor (compared 2 Johny) from when he was just a boy doing his first acting (in the drama series). then comes This boys life, Basketball Diary and Whats eating Gilberts grape. till now all his performance on his movie's where amazing, except for The Beach coz that was an ok movie. though, Johny is a great actor aswell, but he is just to busy doing box office movie like Pirate of the Carebean, which is for me a great movie, but luck deep performance.

movie doesn't say why momma died but you may assume her 500 lbs weight was a contributing factor..

i love this movie. i thought the writing was great and the acting was incredible--especially from leo. i really enjoy these lines:

I have a son who has mental retardation/autism. He his 17 years old. Leo played this role dead on! Bravos on the movie for showing the public that special people can be loveable and not so strange after all.

Do you realize that people didn't make fun of Arnie? They made fun of his mother! The town was used to Arnie, they saw him everyday. They accepted him. His mother never ventured into public. People couldn't see past her size. They didn't know her well enough to see past her disability.

Leo's performance in this film is one of my favorite of all time. He truly was spot on; when someone's performance can move you and change your perspective on life, you know they did a good job.

I also feel that Darlene Gates did a phenomenal job; the fact she isn't even an actress makes it all the more incredible. The fact that she teared up just discussing certain scenes show's how dedicated to the film and intertwined she was with her character.

Amazing movie. Is and always will be my fav.

I saw many time. It was a very touching film, I cried many time. I love the family, young Johnny loved his brother. I wish to have a same brother like Johnny. The sun set so beautiful, the music of the film so fresh. The most isolated family but full of love. I cried for the dead of ma ma. Leonado performed very good, Johnny is perfect.

Since I wrote this I have seen the movie twice, it is a very beautiful movie. There is quite a bit of symbolism going on, that I'm sure would be easy to miss the first time you watch it. I got my mother and father-in-law to watch it with me last night, because they too had never seen the movie. They enjoyed it.. my father-in-law's favorite part was where Gilbert was at the insurance office, and the guy is subtly threatning to kill him. Have you ever read the book?
