The point of walking the circle is to train you to be sensitve to angles of advantage that put you at the side or behind the opponent. Second, to teach you to watch the combat feild at a 360 degree range while walking and turning your waist. This is good for multiple or single opponent. Third to teach how to hit while in motion against multiple opponents. I was taught that the founder when in a real fight would move around freely doing bagua techniqes so as to intice the opponnent to attack.
you walk in a circle so you learn to stay balanced even while you turn advance and retreat. Circle stepping in pa kua also strengthens the waist, the legs, the abs, the chest, and improves posture and breathing. As with all good things you should find out for yourself.
All I can say is you can't know the point without walking the circle...however monotonous or pointless it may seem, if you make yourself keep walking the circle, you won't regret it. At least I don't.
