  • Majestic!

  • I have never heard this song performed any better than this version. This is THE ultimate performance of this song, never to be topped.

  • listen to this in the hills of Jerusalem

  • This album was a tour de force. The music, the artwork on the album cover, the concept of it all, was just out there. Really enjoyed listening to this, thanks for posting.

  • My E.L.P favorite song.

  • The most *majestic* rendition ever of a great anthem! Every quality that made England great is all right here: Blake's language (poem), Emerson's architectural genius in shaping the sound, Lake's angel clear voice, and Palmer's berserker fury!

  • I was 18 when I bought this album. Keith Emerson grew up 4 in our Town.

  • 古き良き時代のプログレに乾杯!

  • CHI è QUI MADATO DA RICHARD BENSON??

  • You Could Say What ELP did Best, but that isnt exactly true, They took Classics and brought them to the Prog Rock Fans, not changing them much but just enough to also claim them as there own, This Track will always fill the Englishmans heart as its ment to.

All the Prog Rock groups were mostly classical trained but knew they would never earn enough in the Classical Arena.

  • Actual goosebumps!

  • One of the great Anglican hymn tunes of all time. I love Hubert Parry.

I must say, though, that every time I hear the last line I want to segue into "With a Little Bit of Luck."

  • Magnificent !!!!!

  • GRANDI!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Begs the question: What would rock music sound like with out the Moog synthesyiser or the Hammond B-3 organ? I wore four copies of this lp out and still use it to audition speakers and amps - particular their take on Ginestera's "Toccata"

  • oh dear :(

  • This song makes me feel jewish.

  • @glaxko2

Glaxko, I am Jewish, and I assure you, there's nothing less Jewish than this song! It reminds me of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

  • @RaananVolesPianist oi... well thats what happens when a roman catholic listens to ELP.

  • If it makes you feel isolated by it's attempts at supremacy then it makes me feel Jewish too although I am anyway. Both Blakes composition and the whole Prog rock thing are about being the biggest and the best, that's why we have or had Punk rock as a backlash against conformity. Shame about the dycotamy I love both.

  • f....ing love this song!!

  • i'm glad that i grew up with the music of this era.

  • To you @alkimst . I had to smile when I read your comment ! For I too went to jr high/high in the 70's in California, and man was that a good time and place, to be an adolescent . We did indeed at that time have access to a large choice of music that was based on pure talent (and good smoke to write the lyrics) back then. We took it for granted. Now good bands with talent are few and far between. But there are some out there. Not many, but few.

  • The Best

  • I listened to all their albums growing up and these three men put out some of the best music of that time period - tons of talent

  • @pianotennisman I agree , best ever

  • @pianotennisman I cant say your wrong..One of the best bands ever:):)

  • Tehkan World Cup!

  • fave song off this album. Blake is mystifying

  • i wore this album out at 13 too incredible

  • I am crying now.

  • I bought the LP when I was 16. Great album.

    Saludos desde Mèxico.

  • Wie herinnert zich zijn Jerusalem? Zarija Clabatti

  • Great and wonderful song!...I remember when I was thirteen...

  • Wonderful!

  • @SuperVerdone, Do you you want to buy the albums! I got them!

  • Classic

  • @opiumtrails

    and just GREAT !

  • the true anthem of england!!!!........

  • @SuperVerdone Greg Lake was the lead singer of King Crimson for some time (In the Court of the Crimson King and In The Wake of Poseidon). Try listening to Karn Evil 9, great music by ELP. The first four ELP albuns are great, check them out.

  • @SuperVerdone Their first four albums, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Tarkus, Trilogy and Brain salad surgery are all considered to be good albums, usually ranked in this order Emerson Lake & Palmer, Brain Salad Surgery, Trilogy and then Tarsus. The general rule is to avoid anything after the album Love Beach, widely considered to be one of the worst albums ever made

  • Supreme! Apogean!

  • Supreme!

  • Some like it, some don't. It's progressive rock, and ELP was at the forefront of it. I love it.

  • I saw this group at California Jam on April 6, 1974 and a couple months later in Long Beach< Ca, excellent group, over the top!

  • @SuperVerdone there is no help for you ... you like what you like.... E,L & P are all highly accomplished at their instrument.... some I like, some I dont.....there are people who think Beethoven is a hack....no artistic product has ever met with universal acceptance and acclaim...

  • ↓correction: loses

  • dramatic and magnificent. this song never looses its color. elp forever!

  • I estimate that that Dashboard Drumming was invented at a dark parking lot in Pawtucket right around the release date of this Epic!

  • Well done .

I learned a lot of elp`s musices. thank you from japan.

    my name is SUZUKI.

  • The BBC wouldn't play this version on the radio as they thought it "unseemly". Some say the whole album (Brain Salad Surgery) was too critical of Britain's imperialism and that rubbed the BBC the wrong way (ie, Karn Evil 9, etc). Some say that's far-fetched, to accuse the band and the album as being anti-imperialistic.

It's really interesting that one of the most rousing renditions of this anthem was one the BBC wouldn't play. I've seen many who say it's their favourite version.

  • MASTERPIECE

  • WELL DESERVED TRIBUTE TO THE HOMELAND OF MODERN DEMOCRACY..AND A GREAT SOUND....

  • This song was taken from the 18th century poet and philosopher William Blake. I am just curious, some of the lines in the poem or lyrics might be referring to the evilness of the industrial revolution (among those satanic mills).

  • @whyicare Good catch. Most people think of it as solely religious, which wasn't Blake's intention. It's covered by Billy Bragg, too.

  • @whyicare yes, exactly. Blake was critical of the excessively capitalistic unfeeling empire that Britain was become (becoming?).

  • @videotater You are spot on. Blake was very much interested in the industrial oppression going on, and anyone who can't see that is ignorant and has no knowledge of Blake.

  • @whyicare

But the music was written by the English classical composer Huber Parry,( 27 February 1848 – 7 October 1918). He was also the Director of the Royal College of Music in England during his lifetime. And no, the lyrics have nothing to do with economics but rather imagery which I read about while in college. I studied his music as well as other composers in college as a theory and composition major.

  • Curiously, this song is performed at the end of the film "Chariots of fire" in an scene into an Scotish Presbiterian Church. It seems usual for them, but I haven't information in detail. I am Spanish and I don't know anything about presbiterian church in Scotland. Maybe somebody could tell me if it is usual form them to sing this song.

Anyway, it is a beatiful song and a gorgeous performance from this three men: E L& P

  • @Onewhoknowswhatisgoo I don`t think it has anything to do with Presbyterianism. Certainly not in Scotland. It`s more of an English favourite.

  • What a cool album cover. Looks like something you would find from a death metal band. Good song.

  • @hoturtu87 Designed by HR Giger, the guy who invented the "Alien" creature of the movie franchise. You should check out his book of art "Necronomicon"

  • @videotater Thanks for letting me know who the artist is. I looked at some other artwork by HR Giger on the internet. I'm 40 years old and I can't believe I am just learning about this amazing artist.

  • @hoturtu87 I remember seeing this album for the first time in the 70's. First time I, or most people, for that matter, became familiar with Giger. By no means the last; NECRONOMICON is an incredible portfolio.

  • A poem based on an apochryphal account of when the young Jesus visited Britain with his uncle, Joseph of Arimathea; briefly Heaven (Jerusalem) graced the the fair lands of Britian.

  • I was interested to hear recently that at the time of its release the BBC refused to play this, on the grounds that it was 'disrespectful' and might upset English patriots. How things change - if the song had been released today the BBC probably wouldn't play it because it was "too nationalistic" and might upset multi-multiculturalists.!

  • @RichieStrongTea: They just sang this in the Abbey at Will & Katey's wedding ;>

  • @nighthawk006phoenix --I would hope so, I'm pretty sure this is England's National Anthem....

  • @eddievars England's National Anthem?

  • I'm now going to download this version of Juresalem on to my iPod so I can listen to it while driving my Segway to Tescos in Littlehamton. How cool is that?

  • @RichieStrongTea Maybe they would not play it for being too anti-capitalist.

  • @RichieStrongTea

Well, to be fair, if you get offended because something is not patriotic enough or isn't paying you enough respect, you're probably a pussy and thus your opinion is probably invalid.

  • Still Amazing and mind boggling music after all these years! There is absolutely no intelligence in todays music.

  • it's a poem by william blake that he wrote in the preface of his book/poem 'Milton'

  • What a Great Performance!! ELP..one of the Greatest!!! Thank you , Jerusalem!!

  • We got married with this song.

  • This is how the great hymm should be played!

  • Ultimate version of a great song

  • I remember years ago I suggested to a friend of mine to buy this when it first came out and when we got home we got stoned and listened to it. It was more pop orientated than their other stuff even though it was still balls to bone prog rock. I liked their previous stuff but I found it to be like classical music in that it means something different to everyone who listens to it. Karn Evil 9 pt 2 is still in airplay on classic rock stations and it's the live version.

  • @alwaysopen - listen to the lyrics they wrote for "Pictures at an Exhibition". If you're still not transformed, the you will be in the words of St. Paul, "...inexcusable, oh man..."

  • What A great piece of Music. I saw them live when this album was released. Awesome now I can YOUTUBE it.

    Danny Long Island.

  • quando la musica incontra la perfezione

  • . . . William Blake. . .

  • I truly love this song ........thanks as i tried for a long time to find the studio version. Peace my friend.

  • ELP are the only humans to acknowledge Jesus the Just walked the green hills of Britain. But no one knows what the fuc* they're talking about!! The Son of Jesus for Christ's sake!

  • @daveman439 They didn't write this song.

  • Christ said, "Oh Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How I longed to gather you like a hen gathers her chics, but you would not". I ask, why wouldn't they want to be gathered?...

  • Great, lyrics please. Thank you

  • EXCELLENT MUSIC

  • You said 'mattress', didn't you? Now I have to stand in the tea chest! :)

  • @TheJohnnyCotts

    But it's my only line.

  • @TheJohnnyCotts "But it's my only line!"

  • But it's my only line!

  • @TheJohnnyCotts hahaha

  • Bring me my chariot of Fire....***

  • Grandissimo brano! Oltretutto il testo è una poesia di William Blake, uno dei miei poeti preferiti...

  • has anyone heard the song called Jerusalem by a band called Phoenix Press, old but stunning!!

  • I've always loved this hymn [and i'm not even british], and this has got to be the best rendition of it, ever!

  • Brano introduttivo dell'album Brain Salad Surgery

  • a grand poetic invocation that likely wants the context of the larger ELP conceptual music: i.e, the whole enchilada (album) ELP uses the classical form(s) to the benefit of music past, present, and hereafter -- oh, this just in: Jerusalem: poem by Will Blake put to music -- Awesome cover, ELP, mega-kudos ...

  • Bring me my bow of burning gold!

Bring me my arrows of desire!

Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold!

Bring me my Chariot of Fire!

    I will not cease from mental fight;

Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand

    Til we have built Jerusalem

In England's green and pleasant land.

  • And did those feet in ancient time,

    Walk upon England's mountains green?

And was the Holy Lamb of God

    on England's pleasant pastures seen?

    And did the Countenance Divine,

Shine forth upon our clouded hills?

    And was Jerusalem built here

    Among these dark Satanic mills?

  • "I wish this was America's National Anthem."

  • breathtaking!

  • so I am just wondering why can't i find any live versions of this performed by ELP? Have they been Pulled for some reason? Wierd!

  • @sushman I can't either. I'd love to see them doing this one and Benny the Bouncer live.

  • Me iba cantando en voz baja esta canción cuando iba rumbo a la facultad, previo a dar mis exámenes. Me daba ánimo. Vaya recuerdo.

  • Geniales marcaron un estilo en su época con su sonido.

  • love this tune. principle at our school made us all learn this tune. i had no idea it was a blake poem or ELP had done it. I love singing it and also playing it for my kids.

  • A great song, and great quality - thank you! Could someone upload a studio version (preferably in hq, of course ;-) ) of 'black moon' and 'paper blood'?

  • @1pa2ch This is the studio version...

  • @dhaddox I know, I was talking about 'Black Moon' and 'Paper Blood' - as stated clearly in my comment...

  • @1pa2ch chinga tu madre

¿no sabes leer, idiota?

  • @dhaddox: Eso ya lo ví... y tus padres?

  • @1pa2ch lo que sea

  • @dhaddox :D
