This album was a tour de force. The music, the artwork on the album cover, the concept of it all, was just out there. Really enjoyed listening to this, thanks for posting.
The most *majestic* rendition ever of a great anthem! Every quality that made England great is all right here: Blake's language (poem), Emerson's architectural genius in shaping the sound, Lake's angel clear voice, and Palmer's berserker fury!
You Could Say What ELP did Best, but that isnt exactly true, They took Classics and brought them to the Prog Rock Fans, not changing them much but just enough to also claim them as there own, This Track will always fill the Englishmans heart as its ment to.
All the Prog Rock groups were mostly classical trained but knew they would never earn enough in the Classical Arena.
Begs the question: What would rock music sound like with out the Moog synthesyiser or the Hammond B-3 organ? I wore four copies of this lp out and still use it to audition speakers and amps - particular their take on Ginestera's "Toccata"
@Redfingers If someone did think like that then indeed that would be true, but that person is not me. Nowhere did I say I personally believed that, did I?
If it makes you feel isolated by it's attempts at supremacy then it makes me feel Jewish too although I am anyway. Both Blakes composition and the whole Prog rock thing are about being the biggest and the best, that's why we have or had Punk rock as a backlash against conformity. Shame about the dycotamy I love both.
To you @alkimst . I had to smile when I read your comment ! For I too went to jr high/high in the 70's in California, and man was that a good time and place, to be an adolescent . We did indeed at that time have access to a large choice of music that was based on pure talent (and good smoke to write the lyrics) back then. We took it for granted. Now good bands with talent are few and far between. But there are some out there. Not many, but few.
@SuperVerdone Greg Lake was the lead singer of King Crimson for some time (In the Court of the Crimson King and In The Wake of Poseidon). Try listening to Karn Evil 9, great music by ELP. The first four ELP albuns are great, check them out.
@SuperVerdone Their first four albums, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Tarkus, Trilogy and Brain salad surgery are all considered to be good albums, usually ranked in this order Emerson Lake & Palmer, Brain Salad Surgery, Trilogy and then Tarsus. The general rule is to avoid anything after the album Love Beach, widely considered to be one of the worst albums ever made
@ReturnToNilbog Works Vol 1 was good, especially the side with Fanfare of the Comman Man and Pirates. But your right about Love Beach. Its too bad they had to rush it because of the Works tour. They about went bankrupt because they took a full orchrestra on tour with them. But I would add Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends to your list..... That was just fantastic
@SuperVerdone there is no help for you ... you like what you like.... E,L & P are all highly accomplished at their instrument.... some I like, some I dont.....there are people who think Beethoven is a hack....no artistic product has ever met with universal acceptance and acclaim...
The BBC wouldn't play this version on the radio as they thought it "unseemly". Some say the whole album (Brain Salad Surgery) was too critical of Britain's imperialism and that rubbed the BBC the wrong way (ie, Karn Evil 9, etc). Some say that's far-fetched, to accuse the band and the album as being anti-imperialistic.
It's really interesting that one of the most rousing renditions of this anthem was one the BBC wouldn't play. I've seen many who say it's their favourite version.
This song was taken from the 18th century poet and philosopher William Blake. I am just curious, some of the lines in the poem or lyrics might be referring to the evilness of the industrial revolution (among those satanic mills).
@videotater You are spot on. Blake was very much interested in the industrial oppression going on, and anyone who can't see that is ignorant and has no knowledge of Blake.
But the music was written by the English classical composer Huber Parry,( 27 February 1848 – 7 October 1918). He was also the Director of the Royal College of Music in England during his lifetime. And no, the lyrics have nothing to do with economics but rather imagery which I read about while in college. I studied his music as well as other composers in college as a theory and composition major.
Curiously, this song is performed at the end of the film "Chariots of fire" in an scene into an Scotish Presbiterian Church. It seems usual for them, but I haven't information in detail. I am Spanish and I don't know anything about presbiterian church in Scotland. Maybe somebody could tell me if it is usual form them to sing this song.
Anyway, it is a beatiful song and a gorgeous performance from this three men: E L& P
@hoturtu87 Designed by HR Giger, the guy who invented the "Alien" creature of the movie franchise. You should check out his book of art "Necronomicon"
@videotater Thanks for letting me know who the artist is. I looked at some other artwork by HR Giger on the internet. I'm 40 years old and I can't believe I am just learning about this amazing artist.
@hoturtu87 I remember seeing this album for the first time in the 70's. First time I, or most people, for that matter, became familiar with Giger. By no means the last; NECRONOMICON is an incredible portfolio.
A poem based on an apochryphal account of when the young Jesus visited Britain with his uncle, Joseph of Arimathea; briefly Heaven (Jerusalem) graced the the fair lands of Britian.
I was interested to hear recently that at the time of its release the BBC refused to play this, on the grounds that it was 'disrespectful' and might upset English patriots. How things change - if the song had been released today the BBC probably wouldn't play it because it was "too nationalistic" and might upset multi-multiculturalists.!
I'm now going to download this version of Juresalem on to my iPod so I can listen to it while driving my Segway to Tescos in Littlehamton. How cool is that?
Well, to be fair, if you get offended because something is not patriotic enough or isn't paying you enough respect, you're probably a pussy and thus your opinion is probably invalid.
@RichieStrongTea 'I do not like the reappearance of The Jesuits ... If ever there was a body of men who merited damnation on earth and in hell, it is this society of Loyola's. ELP are the only humans to acknowledge Jesus the Just walked the green hills of Britain. But no one knows what the fuc* they're talking about!! The Son of Jesus for Christ's sake!
Christ said, "Oh Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How I longed to gather you like a hen gathers her chics, but you would not". I ask, why wouldn't they want to be gathered?...

Ho perso il vinile originale. I remember my thirteen's. It's good to re-listen to this special song. The label was 'manticore' as I remember...

A great song, and great quality - thank you! Could someone upload a studio version (preferably in hq, of course ;-) ) of 'black moon' and 'paper blood'?

@1pa2ch This is the studio version...

@dhaddox I know, I was talking about 'Black Moon' and 'Paper Blood' - as stated clearly in my comment...

¿no sabes leer, idiota?
