My renter has a kitten and was told by the vet to wait until she was 6 months old, well 6 months was way too late and now she the kitten is pregnant. Trouble is neither of us have a car so we have to have someone to drive us to the animal hospital and trouble is that here in Winnipeg, MB they penalize people for having a fertile cat by charging $50 a year, there are at least three wild male cats (one of them is quite large) in the area, and I do not want our cat to be torn apart.

Agreed, we have 9 fixed, old+happy cats. Our one baby didn't get fixed until she was 7, and she had developed a uterine infection that almost killed her, that she never would have gotten, had she been fixed earlier. Fixing them also takes aggressive territorial behaviors out of males, and females stop making yowling sounds every few weeks they make when they're in heat. Other than that, they are the same cats, but they act happier and get along better with other cats of both genders.

This video is great. My little kitty is 11.5 weeks, I'm currently waiting for a response from the MEOW foundation regarding subsidized neutering. Just $50 for a boy kitty! I could even get it done free with the city of Calgay, but I would like to support MEOW, so $50 isn't too bad. Great video with much needed message. I volunteered with a cat rescue group. Til then I had no idea of the overwhelming number of pets needing homes. We had 15 volunteers & averaged 600 calls a month w/people usually saying "come get this cat", like we had all the staff & resources in the world plus a taxi service! It is your RESPONSIBILITY to spay or neuter. I do not believe there are no low cost spay/neuter programs in NY. Check with vets, Humane Society, SPCA, Alley Cat allies, rescue groups.
I wish it wasn't so expensive. I found a kitten 3 months ago, I took her in I couldn't leave her! I had 3 but Isabella makes 4. The others are fixed. All are indoor cats. Unwanted litters isn't the concern. I don't want Izzy to suffer through heat! I know a fixed kitty is a healthier & happier kitty but NY state doesn't have programs to help pets get fixed anymore. @etonks try calling 1-888-FOR-TEAM. My mom gave me their number to get my kitten spayed. It only costs $77. They will let you know when the mobile vet truck will be near ur residence and u just bring the kitty there and pick them up in the same day. Good Luck!

Not only does early spaying and neutering control the population, but consider these facts: Spaying before the age of 6 months results in a 91% of reduction of risk of mammary cancer. Spaying before the age of 1 year results in a 86% reduction of risk. Spaying before the age of 2 only leads to an 11% reduction in risk. Giving birth to kittens has no effect on mammary cancer at all. And spaying after the age of 2 does not reduce the risk of cancer at all...so spay early!

I 'am also a vet tech i beleave that its awonderful thing to have pets spay and neutered. theres toman strays breeding . it angers me that illresponcible pet ownerse don't want to be bothered to take their pets to the vet and these animals are thrown away abandoned and either killed in shelters because of the lack of space room. or hit ny cars from being strays. i know this in my community thers alot of strays i have fed and traped and neuter them..

They bodies are turned into fertilizer. And if people spay & neuter this makes more room in shelters. No room, means more euthanasia. Is that clear njdx1?

Exactly! Although we took in a stray a few months ago (I don't think she was always a stray though, shes so friendly) and she had kittens the week after we got her. We didn't even know she was pregnant! She had 3, my friend took two and we kept one =] We got Patch spayed as soon as the vet gave us the okay, and Smokey is getting neutered tomorrow.

I wish it wasn't so expensive. I found a kitten 3 months ago, I took her in I couldn't leave her! I had 3 but Isabella makes 4. The others are fixed. All are indoor cats. Unwanted litters isn't the concern. I don't want Izzy to suffer through heat! I know a fixed kitty is a healthier & happier kitty but NY state doesn't have programs to help pets get fixed anymore. @etonks try calling 1-888-FOR-TEAM. My mom gave me their number to get my kitten spayed. It only costs $77. They will let you know when the mobile vet truck will be near ur residence and u just bring the kitty there and pick them up in the same day. Good Luck!

Well done - cute and SO TRUE - Please spay / neuter before the kitten is old enough to mate - it helps prevent cancer of the mammary glands as well as preventing more kittens than you have room for.

It is CRUEL for your cats, especially for the female cat, to have litter after litter! When you REALLY love your cat, you have to spay and neuter them as soon as they reach the age, in where this is possible! With spaying and neutering you protect them for diseases and some are lethal. You also save lives! NO more cats and kittens that are killed, because there are not enough good homes for them. Pet owners should take their responsibilities!

Not only does early spaying and neutering control the population, but consider these facts: Spaying before the age of 6 months results in a 91% of reduction of risk of mammary cancer. Spaying before the age of 1 year results in a 86% reduction of risk. Spaying before the age of 2 only leads to an 11% reduction in risk. Giving birth to kittens has no effect on mammary cancer at all. And spaying after the age of 2 does not reduce the risk of cancer at all...so spay early!

I 'am also a vet tech i beleave that its awonderful thing to have pets spay and neutered. theres toman strays breeding . it angers me that illresponcible pet ownerse don't want to be bothered to take their pets to the vet and these animals are thrown away abandoned and either killed in shelters because of the lack of space room. or hit ny cars from being strays. i know this in my community thers alot of strays i have fed and traped and neuter them..

I'm a vet tech. You need to be educated. It's not cruel to neuter & spay. It's humane! I've seen firsthand what happens at local animal shelters. There are trashcans piled FULL of dead dogs/puppies and cats/kittens who have been killed because there is just no more room for them at the shelter. If more people would spay & neuter their pets many furry lives would be spared. SPAYING & NEUTERING IS IMPORTANT. A true animal lover know this. It's our responsibility to save lives. Thank you.

Are you out of your mind? You're a vet tech and you see trashcans piled full of dead dogs/puppies and cats/kittens? They don't put them in trashcans you nut. And you don't even make sense by saying of more people spay & neuter that "furry lives would be spared". Say what? They wouldn't even be born. Unfortunately, I'm sorry to say that at the shelter where I work when the vet techs are finished doing the euthanasia with Pentobarbital, and the dog or cat is no longer alive, the animals are heaped on top of one another into metal bins that are then placed in a freezer awaiting pick up from a rendering company. They bodies are turned into fertilizer. And if people spay & neuter this makes more room in shelters. No room, means more euthanasia. Is that clear njdx1?

Exactly! Although we took in a stray a few months ago (I don't think she was always a stray though, shes so friendly) and she had kittens the week after we got her. We didn't even know she was pregnant! She had 3, my friend took two and we kept one =] We got Patch spayed as soon as the vet gave us the okay, and Smokey is getting neutered tomorrow.

This is an advocating sterilization and castration. In fact, cats that are proliferating in danger: it may be regarded as a nuisance and be victims of cruelty by humans. More kittens can die from cold, hunger and abandonment. But I do not like the tone of the message: that it bothers there more? Cats or humans? My cat is not neutered but out on a leash and stay home the rest of the day ...

Humans can control their procreation instinct and will have only as many children as can support and give home to. Cats can't do that, nature tells them to have as many kittens as possible.
