@CBSnews2010 lol if your not a multimillionaire you will not be able to afford it. imagine about 20 ferraris... know what I'm sayin? this is a pilot training simulator, not some kind of microsoft product.
this is bogus. you cannot land with the brakes set, either via the parking brake lever (which would never be set in flight because you have depress both brake pedals while pulling up on the parking brake lever) or the pilots applying pedal brakes inflight ... will NOT set the brakes in flight. this is a bogus video.
with a landing as hard as that I wouldnt be surprised if the tires failed without the parking brake on. You forgot to flare. Saw your other landing though which was much better!

@weewoodeal I don't remember what it was... something along the lines of... why do all the dickheads get the chance to go to flight simulators or something.
@LuckyBambooExpert That is the reason he is in a simulator! You are such an idiot. EVERY pilot has crashed in a simulator. Notice how young he is. He will not be flying a commercial airliner for a while.
I don't fly commercial Jets but all of my "Before Landing" checklists require that you check to make sure that your brakes are released. Standard procedure. Landing gear also. Some systems (Collins) will alert you on approach.
@MADdrummer971 Its a MD-11. The title says is an MD-11 As well. Plus, a 727 doesn't have ANY LED displays in her cockpit. As well as the cockpit layout is completely different. Please research your planes before telling others what kinds of planes it is :\
@cpdrj actualy i think the pre taxi and after taxi checklists are the only one refering to parking brakes.. my guess is that this was done intentionaly to demonstrate total tyre failure for landing checklist you only have to set the autobrake (at least in some a/c) most of the job is automated today
@MPGHDeejay Not only in Germany. I think it's pretty common. There are some in England (Gatwick if I remember well), where you can get a few hours for some bucks :)
i flew in an md-11 simulator once, great experience. would like to have one of those babies but they go around 5million francs, thats around 6million dollars.. which i dont have unfortunately.
@zimThuet oh man! yeah! would like to have that one too, but! -> we consider only initial cost! You need to add some extra for electricity and maintenance! Should be cheaper than the real AC to maintain but still - spend ~50-100k a year, I assume, not the best option )
Hmm ... let's consider the specs relevant to this incident as found in Wikipedia:
--Operating empty weight: 283,975 lb
--Typical cruise speed: ... 544 mph ...
I guess the slowest landing speed would be over 125 mph. Now, it seems to me conceivable that 283,975 lbs of pressure at 125 mph on 10 rubber tires locked stiff by the brakes ... well, they'd get shredded to smithereens and there'd be sparks galore from 10 steel wheels grinding on the asphalt. *sigh* :( That sound should be simuld.
@Austyg 130-150 kts. depending on terrain conditions, weights, fuel quantity left, runway length, etc. It's the warning sound itself which is scary.. I had a new copilot along for the ride with me one time (I fly 737's for Continental, now United) and he had confused the parking brakes for another set of switches, as they changed they layout in the NG 737's. That was a scary ride :) Cheers.
So my alternative isen't so good as well, X-Plane. :3((
This FAA approved software is very expensive, I guess.
However the PMDG 747-400 is at least near the real physics instead of the default planes, were you can brake full from touchdown without the system detecting anything. LOL
I like FSX because it is so common and you can improve it to a high level of details, making the look out of the windows astounding. And the Payware planes are really nice and realistic but these add-ons are costly.
boy didn't grasp the gravity of the situation; seemed unable to suspend the awareness of the simulation nature of the exercise . . . "It's just a video game." Uh, no, you should be SERIOUSLY considering where you failed ... and learn fully the lesson.
@Austyg Exactly. This is THE place to learn from your mistakes. Costs a lot less, in parts, aircraft, liability lawsuits, etc. That is why most people who want to fly are dismissed or give up: they're arrogant, assuming and complacent. There's no room in the sky for such attitudes.
Yeah, if there wasn't for simulators, people never would come close to the experience.
And what most people think, it's not the real deal...Nah, it is. A computer simulates everything like in reality, with the right software. The person sitting in the pilot sit, must have really annoyed the instructor for acting so mean, to set the parking brakes shortly before landing.
But a person who really knows how a planes works, would have checked the EICAS. ;3)
@DarkwerefoxRed Yep, the EICAS tells all! Plus, it never hurts to do a quick glance at the pedestal to make sure all the levers are in their correct place during final approach while the other pilot handles the approach.
@DarkwerefoxRed You do realize this is a student, and the instructor is conducting certain tests for system management? Also, EICAS does not know all, in many planes hydraulic pressure is only available on the FMC. EICAS is Engine Instrument and Crew Alerting System, in many cases, it doesn't have parking brake info, that is below the throttle quadrant, where a lever marked "PRK BK" or "PARKING SET" will be illuminated in red when activated.
@Austyg You are totally right, this is NOT a game, this is a simulator of the REALITY. and even the reaction when they began to spin was pretty amazing to me, the guy was simply surprised when he should've applied either reverse thrust on the left engine or a bit of right engine power (or both) to compensate for turning tendency, even if such a situation with tyres had accured. fight till the end, man, you got people behind you... (sorry for spelling mistakes if any).
@tgm9991 hehe :) still, mate, we're talking about aviation. and should be safe from any point of view. we have always got people everywhere arround us when we fly. beneath us - houses, behind us on the final approach, in front of us when we depart, to the left and to the right, straight ahead and behind us there is a traffic packed with people even when are in straight and level flight... so, even if there's a little thread, it can go big.
@cba999casey Incorrect, the throttle was not completely cut, and it also can be cut at 50 feet, that is totally fine, in fact, many pilots do that in the 40-20 range to ensure that the engines do not have to spool up again so quickly when the reverse thrust is being used on the ground.
Who in the right mind would set the parking brake on for landing? Unless they are a multi billionaire and can just grab the money for brake pads, hydraulic fluid, a whole new nose gear and tyres out of their wallet...
I know this is a simulator, and you can do physically anything, but there have been incidents which the parking brake has been set on landing.
Don't know bout the parking brakes, but the fact that the guy didnt flare the plane properly and hit the ground with a HUGE vertical speed, which with such kind'a weight would've caused just the same consequences. Start your flare at 50' next time, pull up slightly and hold with a little adding of thrust (about 1-3%) that would break the ground effect and you wouldn't fall out of it. Try that next time :)))
@kostyaeagle It was perhaps a little hard but it was by no means excessive, The perspective of the camera can make it seem like it's dropping much faster. You never want to land with any thrust other than idle. You wouldn't keep one foot on the gas when you're breaking in your car, it's the same thing. Not to mention 1-3% of thrust would indicate a rather serious engine failure as they idle at around 20% N1.
@flyingturnip1 sure thing i didnt say anything about putting the thrust to 1-3% N1. all i meant was trying to add to existing power about 1-3% exactly when you pass the start of the ground effect stage. and then back to idle. that makes the landing smoooooooth and beautiful. though, i made a little mistake by saying to pull up a bit, no, you leave it as it was but only a bit of thrust. ground effect starts approx 1/3 of a wingspan hight, so just give it a go and you'll love it! :)
@kostyaeagle I'm sure the person flying this does not see these comments, but you're one of the first people I've seen on the aviation area of YouTube who knows that he is talking about. You are completely correct in saying that the plane needs to start flare no closer to the ground than the 50 foot mark. Then you add thrust to compensate for the new angle of attack. Keep educating the people of YouTube, because it seems like no one knows what they're talking about anymore..
@asdfghjklsaab Thank you very much for your comment. I am trying to educate my self all the time and trying to give some kind of edvice to other people, who MIGHT want to use it :) Let's hope that people, who "loves" aviation will also love to study. Let's work for safe aviation together then :)
@kostyaeagle No problem, thanks for replying. Again, FSX is detailed, but doesn't contain all the real things that an airplane has, so it's always a good idea to get some knowledge from books outside the computer.. Thanks :)
@Myggomag How is it a pilot failure? If you read the description the instructor set it on the simulator without the pilot having any knowledge of it...
So the only way he could have figured it out was when he touched down... And he did figure it out at that point when he asked the instructor "Did you program this?"
@Myggomag READ THE DESCRIPTION READ THE DESCRIPTION READ THE DESCRIPTION READ THE DESCRIPTION READ THE DESCRIPTION READ THE DESCRIPTION READ THE DESCRIPTION READ THE DESCRIPTION READ THE DESCRIPTION
@barthoedemaker Haha that's what the Master Warning switch is for, my friend. But you're right, that's what I would do back when I had my Land Rover Discovery with a perpetually squeaky dashboard.
I like it when the plane starts to skid round and he grabs hold of the dash.

Thanks :)

Myggomag 6 months ago
@Myggomag How is it a pilot failure? If you read the description the instructor set it on the simulator without the pilot having any knowledge of it...
So the only way he could have figured it out was when he touched down... And he did figure it out at that point when he asked the instructor "Did you program this?"

@barthoedemaker Haha that's what the Master Warning switch is for, my friend. But you're right, that's what I would do back when I had my Land Rover Discovery with a perpetually squeaky dashboard.
