Great song. Love it, like most Spector productions. I'm not sure if it would have been a huge hit though. Maybe it would have sounded too far out and people wouldn't have understood it.
Henry Diltz sings lead on this gem. I wonder if the band knew at the time this song appeared in the film that Spector was going to crush the tune by not releasing it?
I am a relatively new fan of Phil Spector (being born long after his heyday of 60's hits) and I gotta say that this is one of the greatest songs he ever did. Too bad that this wasn't released and/or more collaborations weren't done with this band.
@DoorsBeyondDoors I'll agree this is one of my top favorites of Phils. I particularly like seeing the stars and the crowds reaction. Is it just me or is Cher one of the girls sitting in the front row swaying to the music? Anyone know?
I just recently moved to Austin from LA.... I left all my friends and family and everything behind in LA but the only thing I miss is Rodney on the Roq
Phil Spector deserves to be screwed (figuratively, of course) just for not promoting this. He favored certain artists (ronettes, Righteous Bros) and ignored others.
I have this show on VHS. The performances are excellent. My version is hosted by Chuck Berry who introduces each act. Ray Charles, Jan and Dean, The Ronettes, Leslie Gore etc. It does not have all these great behind the scenes footage. It looks like everybody is having such a great time, and imagine Phil Spector got thru the whole show without killing anybody!
Rodney on the Roq used this as his themesong in the early 1980s. brilliant , instantly evocative of Circle City in downtown Orange, Naugles and a better world.
This cut is on a spector compilation LP called rare masters vol. 2. Found it this summer. Deatures a lot of the unreleased stuff from the Box Set. Including the lovely darlene love songs,
A two and a half minute version of the song is on the Back To Mono box set. However this version is the better of the two and is nearly four minutes long. Is this the version that was on the compilation you? Also what is the exact title?
i used to think this track was influenced by pet sounds-era brian wilson. lol. what did i know? i was younger. spector had SUCH AN IMPACT on wilson's production. this track shows it so much more than others, i think. there was good music before, good music after, and good music now, but this was truly the golden era of music.
There's a live version recorded at the Ice House by the MFQ on a CD called Live At the Ice House 1978 that iTunes has. Not quite as much "Wall of Sound" but not bad.
I DID have on vinyl once (an old juke box version) a classic single MFQ did: If All You Think/The Love Of A Clown.....should've been a worldwide number one smash everywhere as far as i'm concerned! Ended up recording my own versions of those tracks in fact (in glorious lo fi)
This track is a stomper as well though.
Can't find any MFQ in the UK; i'd love to find a greatest hits cd with this & the other 2 tracks i've mentioned on it.
My associates and I performed this song live a few times in 1985 and '86. We worshipped T.A.M.I. and the Big TNT Show. I still want to be the white dude playing guitar with Ike and Tina. Who was that guy??? Another hero is Bo Diddeley's bass player on the show, not to mention his drummer, and whoever styled the Showman amps into a flying wedge. And those guys from the audience when Tina points the mic at them. Who are they? They look a bit like the Leaves. More clues toward a cooler world.
This vid is the bomb...I always loved this song by MFQ and Henry Diltz written by the fabulous Harry Nilsson and produced by Phil Spector...this was a favorite of Brian Wilson and Rodney Bingenhiemer still opens his weekly show on KROQ every week with this summer time cruiser...brilliant!! Thanks for posting!
Damn... the things Spector could do with echo. This might be his most genius production and that is saying something.

quite simply: a great song. I think Rodney still uses it to open his show. It sucks they have him on at such an ungodly hour.

If you look closely, you'll see Sky Saxon, the late lead singer of the Seeds in the crowd. One of Phil's masterpieces, and that's for certain!!!
