I can definitely appreciate the high caliber of training Thailand. Their methods and dedication to Muay Thai are simply inspiring. But let's keep in mind that this documentary is titled "Muay Thai in AMERICA." I based on that idea I would expect the film to show training in Thailand, but the focus of the material to be in AMERICA. For that reason, Master Chai and Guru Dan's impact on the art MUST be mentioned. Who cares if someone wears a IAMA shirt or is a JKD practitioner? The art is there.
The fact of the matter is whether or not Matthew J Nielsen like the TBA or not does not make any difference as to the huge contribution it has made to see Muay Thai spread through the USA. Ajarn Chai dedicated his entire life and made sacrifices that neither of us would most likely make to see this happen. He did this so we would not have to you sir should be grateful to him that we can even have this conversation today.
@doubledosemuaythai Are you fucking kidding me??? You talk as if you were the only Muay Thai school in the west coast during that time and Chai was the pioneer of it all, like he's jesus or something, there were actual FIGHTER GYMS being run at the time. Weak. This is just a Master toddy clone.
@Tibun Please name one fighter gym being run in California before 1968 when Ajarn Chai began teaching or one fighter gym in the Inland Empire or actually anywhere in SO Cal being run by a foreigner in 1991 when I opened my first gym in Upland Ca ...that was indeed a fighter gym. Master Toddy has nothing to do with this at all. Your comments are weak and without any real facts. Ajarn Chai began teaching in 1968 and took the first team of "fighters" from the USA to Thailand in 1982 fact.
@Tibun ok bro, for one the guy you are talking too happens to be right about what hes saying. He is the founder of the Thai Boxing Association. So technically he is the jesus of muay thai. Please be respectful
IMO you can't get any better muay thai training outside of thailand, maybe japan for k-1 rules. But this video looked like a JKD camp that just happen to include a muay thai segment, but you can't really, or at least I wouldn't list dan inosanto, whom is a great martial artist especially with them sticks, to highlight my muay thai in america, but really half of it was in thailand, with a sipnet of bruce lee in it highlight. or actually maybe you can for this, but i would reconsider the title.
@hungmanhtran What you may not know about Dan Inosanto is that he is very much responsible for the growth of Muay Thai in this country. Muay Thai in America was a Muay Thai promotion in Santa Monica Ca. that payed tribute to the many sacrifices made by so many great teachers that gave so much for Muay Thai in this country. Ajarn Chai, Dan Inosanto, Ajarn Rex, Khun Kru Puk, Ajarn Kim Kongkriangkai, Jongsanan Fairtex, Kongnapa, Boonkerd Faphimai and many others were recognized and appreciated.
The 15 count combos/kata. The standing around in a Wai pose while the coach instructs, the karate belt system. Non of this is found in modern Thai Muay.
@matthewjnielsen A 15 count combination is not a kata. It is a way for beginners to learn the basics of Muay Thai. Forgive us for reaching out to and teaching all people not just experts as yourself. The "wai" is simply a sign of respect, I'm sorry you are not familiar with that. I don't know what you are talking about Karate belts I am not aware of TBA schools that use this. Muay Thai in Thailand where all who learn fight. In America people want to learn it for self defense, fitness and fun
I used to think like you and ran a fighters gym. The truth is I hurt the growth of Muay Thai in this country when I did that. How? What I was saying is that only fighters could learn Muay thai and that is was not for everyone. I just don't believe that anymore. Yes if you want to fight train like a fighter in Thailand and yes we train our fighters that way. But not all want to be a fighter and when you exclude them from learning the art you slow it's growth.
@matthewjnielsen Not sure why you think that, especially since the host of this video, Double Dose has 3 coaches at their school alone who all fought in Thailand and 2 are native to the homeland. One of them is in their mid 70's and had over 200 fights, the last in his 50's! Also, current TBA camps in Thailand are being hosted by Grandmaster Chai and people like the champion Sangtenoi (sp, sorry)
Better to be open to all instead of closed off to one.
Please post a video of your awesome technique so we can all learn. I am sure the fighters on this video who are fighting all over the world truly wish to see you phenominal technique.
Muay Thai in America pays tribute to a great lineage of Masters: Ajarn Surachai "Chai" Sirisute (Thai Boxing Association - TBA), Guro Dan Inosanto, Sifu Frances Fong.
The full documentary will be available June 2010
Produced and Directed by Don McDaniels of Atma-Sphere Entertainment
Editors Ron Crigler and Zefram Nubia
Soundtrack: Muay Thai In America (available for purchase) co-produced by The Hathaways, mastered by Frances Buckley
Yes that was a mistake of the graphic artist and has been corrected but thank you for pointing this out. We are quite aware of it and were not happy about that either. Thank you.
the kid with long hair at 5;41 his technique on the on knees is wrong ur not suppost to be kneeing upwards ur meant to thrust forward with ur hip pick it up from the sie and drive forward
This Video is very well done. I am proud to be a member of Thai Boxing Assoc. of the USA. I owe incredible amount of thanks to Ajarn Chai, Ajarn Vichai, Khun Khru Bryan and all of the 1st class Khru's and instructors and extended family members of TBA.
Thank you very much for your comments on MUAY THAI IN AMERICA. I'm currently editing the rest of the footage and recording additional soundtrack..... It is an honor to work on this project and to be a part of the TBA family..

The TBA is a good organization in the USA. However, no where near real muay thai thailand standards by no means.

Its really too bad that we cannot see all the great Thai fights here in North America broadcasted from Thailand.

Why does the TBA style of Muay Thai look so much different than what I see in the camps in Thailand?

Many of the fighters in this video are TBA fighters what is different? I have fought in Thailand and I am a TBA member, what are you referring to?
