Its thrilling to see the restored V & T line from Carson City to Virginia City . I've been a fan of the V & T since my first visit to Virginia City in 1952 and have since obtained every publication available about the line. Seeing Engine 29 and hearing it climb the grade with two cars, it sounds as if it is really working hard, it makes me wonder how the old 4-4-0s like the Inyo and Reno made it up the hill with 4 and 5 passenger cars?
@sgprailfan: That's Gold Hill depot. That's considered old territory as the initial excursions from Virginia City terminated there. The "new" territory is from there south to Carson City.
The bridge was taken from Las Vegas where the Boulder Brancgh crossed I-15. A new bridge was installed for freeway widening. That must be a nice long trip. The ride to Gold Hill wasn't that long.
@TYMMCHN: I couldn't ride it because the tickets were sold out! I did wait for a while to show up at Gold Hill, so the ride between there and Mound House seem nice and long.
From that look, I would have thought I was back in 1871 when the V&T started Passenger service. This is so awsome, I gotta return to Virginia City and ride this. This looks so awsome, the V&T did a fabulous job restoring the line, and keep Old 29 under steam.
I shot video of this thing about 2 months before you did when it ran round trip for the first time ever with passengers from Carson City to Virginia City. I live like just down the road from this thing.
Nice video, nice to see the well-run private Virginia and Truckee Railroad getting the contract to operate this $70 million boondoggle.
There's a long story behind the #8 FRSL, basically a couple members hijaaked that loco from Plumas County, let the V&T run it, and made up a story about a "low water incident." They forced the V&T to do a lot of unneeded repairs, and recently they are claiming the work is shoddy. Don't believe everything you hear about the V&T, they know what they're doing.
You are correct, thats when the old shop crew was still around. Speaking of old shop crew, Mr Feits was part of the old shop crew when the 8 ran there. Weird.
@virginiatruckee MR GRAY AND HIS SON ARE A CLASS ACT. I MET THEM ALONG TIME AGO IN THE COIN BUSINESS. THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE AND WILL DO THEIRBEST WITH THE CARSON CITY RUN!!
At 6:45 that looks like one step grade, what % is that?

@luckydoggoldminer: It's supposed to be ongoing as they get funding. I was not told when they expect to open the line, yet.

what is going on with the other engine at 4:37?

That's Feather River Shortline 2-6-2 #8. She ran the V&T excursions until the early 1990's, I've been told.

I wish they put a combine car behind the engine, then the train would look more authentic.
