Hello Youtube! I'm sure you get this a lot, but I'm a 16 year old male singer-songwriter with a mission. I want to be a professional singer and only you can help me achieve that goal. I have written two songs that you may be interested in "Sup" and "Puzzlebox". Please could you take the time to listen, comment and rate. It doesn't matter whether you love it or hate it, I just need some advice. If you're into acepellas and ballads then this is for you! Thank you!
Bowie had many wonderful moments of sound and vision. But Ashes keeps drawing us back as the one video that meshed perfectly with the song. This WAS Bowie's masterpiece, mortal man yearning for a better dimension, and the long suffering endured for short glimpses of that higher realm. This was his crowning achievement of cosmic pursuits. Later music and video were of lesser importance, past his peak enlightenment. But here, for one moment, he duly provided us with his iconic likeness, Major Tom.
@jackcoleproductions Yes, no one else did Pierrot so proud: the sad clown who knows that even if he lost Columbine to Harlequin, he outdid his rival with true feeling and loss. It makes him greater than the tragic object of his unrequited affection AND his competition. That he felt true love for the other world, the ideal, was even more important than conquest! Those things that we treasure, reflect on our soul's worth, tell more than that which we actually acquire. No one looked so good losing.
@AhmadTheChamp When I used to play drums with a small town band, one of the guitarists had an Alesis Midiverb II in his rack box. When he hooked his guitar up to that, it made some really amazing sounds including some that sound like this track. That's definitely one to add in your effects kit. If you have the cash, I'm sure the newer Midiverb4 will deliver additional features and control.
This should be an official Holiday! Everyone could shave their eyebrows (or whatever) and dye their remaining fur a hot red/orange and paint a lightning bolt on their face. Or just turn on to great old tunes like Moonage Daydream. Drop LSD. Pop in The Man Who Fell To Earth. Freak out. Far out. In out..Or, to be on the safe side, just imagine doing some of those things. Maybe there would be a market for getting a contact lens with one permanently dilated pupil! It could be a secret Bowie society.
@lrrlrr There's your answer. It has to do with the individual motive and heart. Early Bowie was more about art for art's sake. Fans who emulated Bowie weren't trying to imitate to rip off or retread original genius, they were diving deeper into a whole experience. You are correct about that other person, however. That aspect has nothing to do with respect for the original. There is a fine line between archaeology and raiding a tomb for undeserved gold. So too with nostalgia: honor or defilement.
All kidding aside. Time to celebrate! It's now officially DAVID BOWIE'S birthday: January 8th, 1947! And that other guy, Elvis.. somebody (he was great too, I guess). But Bowie was THE phenomenon! Bowie brought us the future, and he looked and sounded damn good doing it!
@nutster9000 I believe that was a possibility at one time. But he has stated something to the effect that he wouldn't know what to do with a Knighthood. More appropriate would be to honor him with a Thin White Dukedom. Then again, what does the Duke do? And they already have The Queen...He's probably better off as a mere pawn, that way he could be promoted to any piece on the board as necessary.
@DroopSack Remember, nude typists, especially those who live in glass houses, need to be careful while exposing their punctuation. Don't neglect your apostrophe during contractions, and watch out for your ambiguous dangling participle! Is it that you don't give a damn that you're watching this in the nude or that you don't give a damn about the comments, the video, everything, or what? Of course I'm just playing with you. We hope you do not catch a draft.
Bowie was the friend we never had. He talked about things unseen, but felt deeply. He had a connection to a few who could see beyond the mundane. There is another world beyond this ordinary day-to-day existence. Our addiction is not drugs or shirking obligations. But there IS another world we ARE adicted to: a world where people can appreciate the strangeness of life itself, that there is a BETTER place to be as we put our heads down to sleep. Our children (dreams) will know this next dimension.
@gyngerbrede People use drugs for diverse reasons: escapism, pain killer, altered consciousness, etc.. Bowie, in the early days, took cocaine mostly to stay awake for days on end to sustain momentum in completing his work. A shaman may take drugs to enter reality that is closer to truth than what is layed out before him. Properly induced, it can be a tool to be worked with to follow avenues not normally accessible to the merely self conscious mind. Nothing is free, however. Cost must be weighed.
@MrMajorTime I am addicted to the perception of eternal youth. I agree that we are addicted to the strangeness of life itself, but that of which created by genius. Give love to your children & teach them the value of respect, then they can realise their dreams.
@nutster9000 And remember to have respect for the delicate fabric of life, the most precious gold of all, that little something with fleeting breath, created by some crazy genius that can't be reconstructed in a test tube. It needed the whole laboratory! It just might emerge eternal, victorius at the end of the day. Never mind the tools for implementation or how long it took (maybe 14 billion years). The idea to foster something that can share appreciation came first. Sordid details following...
@MrMajorTime Maybe I should start creating, you never know who might appreciate. That's if I'm capable of getting off my celestial butt! Little acorns...
We know that Major Tom's a junkie...when i heart this song in a pub of London, nice and polite junkies wanted me to come with them at a "party"...I didn't follow them...anyway, i've always loved this song and i will always love this song...
im 15 and I had never heard this song until I watched the tv series Ashes to ashes, and now i cant seem to stop playing the song, a great song for a great tv series!
@kayleee2010 OMG! I thought it was just me :D i used to watch life on mars/ashes to ashes when i was 14/15, and when i heard this song it was like magic! It was my favourite song for about a year and now I've just rediscovered it, it's just got such a strange unique sound!
Ashes to Ashes was Bowie's signature video and ultimate statement! That there is an addiction to the higher realm that is worth all the risks. He's tasted the next dimension that has little in common with mundane existence. No talking from mama is going to convince him that it isn't the most worthwhile pursuit, despite dangers. Death is nothing compared to the chance to see life as it should be. A fool for fearsome sights and looking at things from a less than practical, yet more immediate need.
I suppose this is used in Ashes to Ashes, because Alex learns things about people she loves and trusts (ie. Major Tom) and finds that they aren't who she thinks they are (ie. Major Tom isn't actually like an astronaut, as implied in Space Oddity, but a junkie, on a high)
I woke up my whole college one night playing this at the right volume, i.e. whacked up to the max. I just hope they appreciate it now. But sorry to all of you that I did wake up that night. I still think you did need waking up though... ;) God bless but I still love you all :)
when i go to starbucks and they ask for my name i say David Bowie. Yesterday i got my cup back and on it, it said "so, is there life on mars?" Best day ever.
This song hits the road running. You could be staring at sedimentary layers for millions of years, and then this kicks in like it was always meant to be running in the background. Very unsettling and very satisfying. We just want to crawl down Bowie's funnel here and acknowledge that this was one of the great breakthroughs in time, as Bowie understood that Major Tom was his Alpha and Omega. His creativy from Space Oddity to Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) culminated in freedom for David Jones.
"I've never done good things. I've never done bad things. I've never done anything out of the blue." The grand mystery of how everything can be pre-determined and at the same time free will is possible. Bowie glimpsing the big picture, the Major Time. Within prophecy there is a tight margin for the elect to perceive themselves as perceiving themselves and thereby theoretically alter their path somewhat thus. Even that was preconceived by the highest being but thankfully hidden to the individual.
Just a reminder: Bowie had no one like Bowie to hold up, like we hold up Bowie. Sometimes he seems aloof, unnattainable, it is because he had to be his own measure of hero. We have Bowie as this artist's artist, pushing the envelope, creating genres. Bowie had influences. But he had to be his own prototype for the level of work that concerned him. He became the isolated genius vanguard that pointed a very interesting alternative to pop music as we knew it. Only a handful of talents that far out.
@ivankaramasov I totally agree. I know that I am a bit pretentious, sometimes a little overbearing. About this subject, I have no equal. There I go again. There is a fine line between pretentiousness or self-confidence, belief or faith. That's where I need to be, very precarious, but the only way to make my point. And thank God not everyone will agree with the things I have to say. Hell, sometimes I have a hard time believing the things I say. But I'm under pressures that would kill anyone else.
@niloh96 . i do believe your the retard who doesnt understand sarcasm nor has a sense of humour. Iv probably forgotten more about music than you`ll ever know.

Tuttavia mi attirava, mi risucchiava nel suo mondo. Che sensazione strana!

When Bowie was bored of playing his other songs in concert, he stated that this one still was enjoyable to perform.

@MrMajorTime You are a bit pretentious but you have some good points:-)

@ivankaramasov I totally agree. I know that I am a bit pretentious, sometimes a little overbearing. About this subject, I have no equal. There I go again. There is a fine line between pretentiousness or self-confidence, belief or faith. That's where I need to be, very precarious, but the only way to make my point. And thank God not everyone will agree with the things I have to say. Hell, sometimes I have a hard time believing the things I say. But I'm under pressures that would kill anyone else.
