I got to spend about 15 minutes talking to David B and the others last year after a concert at a small PA college. There were about 70 people there on a rainy night, and I was the only one to stay after to meet the guys. They are all personable, polite, kind-hearted fellows. Their playing has mesmerized me for a number of years now, and I hope they go on playing for many years.
have the members in the group changed? im just getting into these guys, but it seems like there are different members in the videos im watching. they are great by the way!
@wilkiemart yeah, it's they're 25th anniversary this year, the original lead violinist and violist have left the group, but the new guys are just as awesome haha
Yeah well dude, if you think this (and any other music) by bach is easy to play just because the notes are manageble, I'm terribly sorry but you completely missed the point of Bach-music. At the Royal Conservatory The Hague Bach is considered one of the most hard-to-play composers around.
I have to disagree with you. Of course the "hypnotic beauty" is gone with this performance, and normally covering Bach in such a way is 'not done' in my opinion, but in this particular performance I really like the sound that these people can give it by applying their musical intelligence in such a way that a very swinging, jazzy piece comes out. I respect your opinion (and partly share it, people shouldn't touch Bach) but I just can't call this just a 'comedy routine'.
@pelletencate Why not touch Bach? I say, why let music go unchanged for a hundred or so years? Play with it! Change it up! Have fun! Is having fun not the point of playing music? Well, thats my opinion.
@pelletencate: Why shouldn't people touch Bach? He is not some sacred figure, he composed music. Why not leave it open to interpretation after centuries of music developments? Why should we hear Bach the same exact way over and over again?
I appreciate that use of "bass" is confusing. In baroque times, the cello was the bass. If the orchestra had a contrabass, it doubled the cellos and octave lower, hence the term "double bass" for the big bass violin. The big bass is much stronger than the cello as the bass instrument, but, as in a string quartet, the cello serves the bass function and can sing as well.
Well, if we look at the jazz-scene, it is kind of unusual though to use a cello as a bass instrument in a. These guys however do exactly know how to do this, and I think that makes it really cool. What people might not realize is that the violins normally play higher parts than for instance a saxophone, which makes it more suitable for a cello player to "play the bass".
The term 'bass' is used widely in (and before) the baroque music, far before the double bass existed. It originates from the same roots as the word 'base' does, and it means 'basic part'. It used to be written with chord-numberings very often (which maked it a 'basso continuo', a numbered bass) so it could be played on a harpsichord. A double bass is called 'double' because it actually does not play the notes that are written in its part, but it plays them one octave lower.
These guys are fantastic. They bring life back to classical. They seem to love the music so much, they play with all the heart of a Jazz quartet. I imagine back in the day these instruments were played with passion unike the stiff orchestral renditions we hear today. These guys play the way I've always imagined it should be played!!!! I love the music. I keep one of their disks between my favourite Led Zepellin live album and my fave Keith Jarret album.
they're actually classical musicians by trade, but very very adaptable to many genres...they write alot of music aswel....you can buy their scores online I think....just google TISQ, and check their webpage. M
actually, the system we have today of the written music is very bad if we compare it to how the music shall sound. if you listen to a recording, you can hear that they never play exactly as written. that will mean that if you write jazz on paper, you have to know the rythms and phrasing as well as any other genre of classical music. So that means that you can't actually write any type of music on paper!!!
@Omega1988 Wow, what an insightful relation. We can't actually write any type of music on paper!!!!!
Don't you realize that one of the main reasons Western classical music came to dominate the world (yes, including most popular forms of music today came from that paradigm) was that we could put it down on paper, however imperfect? What we have now is already quite an accomplishment, compared to many other cultures who never thought properly of making their music a bit more "scholarly".
