@AshleyIngraham no actually, they are no not the same at all. Mashes Potatoes are much more 'Watery' tasting, with less flavor and body than the method you see here. To the mouth they are not the same at all.
Try it this way and see. If you do not want to peel potatoes (Peeling a boiled Whole potato is quick & very easy tho) you can use Red Potatoes and leave the skin in the dish; I often do...I like the creaminess and taste of the Red potato. Also, only use Whole milk or 1/2 & 1/2.
I personally prefer to remove the skin and cut the potato into smaller pieces so it's cooked in about 10 minutes but I guess it wouldn't taste as good due to the potato absorbing more water.

@AshleyIngraham no, and the fact you call it mashed potatoes doesn't mean a potato puree should be called so.
mashed potatoes are cooked potatoes that have been mashed.
puree is when you add something to (in this case the potatoes) in order to make a softer and lighter cream-like mixture.
