Anyone have any tips for getting rid of stuff? My family isn't even close to hoarding houses, but there is still a lot of stuff just piled in places. im 15 and my room is in the basement and im just getting real tired of things being put in my room because there isn't really anywhere else to put it. My mom always buys things that we don't need, then gets upset later on that the house is always a wreck. I'd say get rid of almost everything and "so does she" but nothing is getting done.

OCD comes in different forms. Some cases are like this, other people are crazy about hygiene or neatness, some get violent imagery, etc. I have OCD, I wash my hands loads and I get lots of images in my head that I can't get out how hard I try, I do sometimes feel that worthless stuff can be handy some day but I'm happy when I throw it away.

This is disposophobia and it is a brain disorder. If someone cleans a hoarders house out without their permission it can be devastating. Some commit suicide, some have to be hospitalized. It is similar to body perception disorders like anorexia. A five foot, five inch woman can see herself as fat at eighty pounds. And be fearful to eat. They are afraid of what each bite they take will do to them, with hoarding it's a feeling they need all the items. They both have altered senses of reality.
My parents are hoarders. Growing up in that environment was, devastating. I can honestly say it effected not only my childhood, but the entirety of my life.. Eventually they gave me the house I was raised in, still containing all the junk.. I didn't know if I should clean and fix it up, or burn it down.
I grew up in similar circumstances. I now (even though I have learned OCD from it) cannot stand clutter and have to take medication to stop the perfectionist in myself, just to calm down and be able to wind down.
I would just clean up the house and get rid of the things you need to and see how you feel then;)
This is a person who always received everything she wanted. She needs a thorough beating. Pick up stuff to throw away and then hit her when she complains. Pick up the pretty doll. Hit her with it across the face. Then toss. Pick up, hit her, toss repeat. Until it's clean and she learns she doesn't always get what she wants.
The value of things: There is instrumental value, there is sentimental value, there is esthetic value, there is educational (informational) value and there is monetary (financial) value. Take your pick. If you just can't throw things away at all, at least store them on shelves, on racks, and in boxes & bins.

Its a double edged sword. If you take a hoarder's stuff they either lose it completely, or they just go out and get more stuff.
However, if authorities are involved their may be no other choice. Sometimes, due to code violations, its either clean up or lose the house.

You dont have to have fancy things. I had a relative he died recently almost 96
and people just loved visiting him as his house was so ordinary and uncluttered.
In his lounge he had a china cabinet with a few things in, 1 pic on the wall,
lounge suite, 2 chairs, tv and thats about all and it was just a lovely feeling
because he was adoreable and good company and simple living everyone loved being around him.

I grew up in similar circumstances. I now (even though I have learned OCD from it) cannot stand clutter and have to take medication to stop the perfectionist in myself, just to calm down and be able to wind down.
I would just clean up the house and get rid of the things you need to and see how you feel then;)

This is a person who always received everything she wanted. She needs a thorough beating. Pick up stuff to throw away and then hit her when she complains. Pick up the pretty doll. Hit her with it across the face. Then toss. Pick up, hit her, toss repeat. Until it's clean and she learns she doesn't always get what she wants.

I am tired of hoarders saying that they hoard because..... there is no reason to hoard except that they are lazy, greedy going aray. the theraist in these shows tell the hoarder, they will not let any thing go with out their permission. The hoarder shows are phony. some of the houses have mold , human and amimal feces all over the house. ninty percent of the houses need to be demoslish. I feel sorry for their neighbors for most of the hoarder i feel no empathy for.

@tomatrans My DH's grandpa's brother was a hoarder. Several years back, he left on vacation for several days. When he came back, he came to a clean house. His adult children took truck loads of everything to the dump. He was angry for a long time, but admitted it was the best thing to happen.
