My henry shires contrail doesen't offer too much headroom either, in fact I have to crawl in feet first to get any headroom. The price we pay for going lite.
I think it is a great way to experiment with types of shelter. Also remember headroom really isn't important. The use of the poles is using what you have on hand.
first attempt was just a groumet. since then I have changed to fabric enforced loop

lifter patches in the middle of the big panels pulled out would increase interior space a lot!!
