It'ssignifcant that the TV version achieved a rare defiance if the rule that TV comedy must always be Labour biased, it made fun of a CND Labour government being mad + a cause of the apocalypse - that was accurate + highly topical when it was made, the real life danger with early 80s Labour. But in the film version, the comedy lefty establishment sternly stepped in and reimposed their thought control, the mad government in the story was changed to Tory.
There WAS a VHS copy released. The series was basically compiled into one show of 138 minutes - only removing the titles and end credits from the episodes inbetween. I think it first came out in 1983, and then was re-released by Channel 5 video in 1987 - owning to the BBFC licence laws of 1984.
There were a few repeats in the late 80's and early 90's on Channel 4 I believe. My copy of the series comes from a 1986 repeat on Channel 4, in the late Friday nights of the beggining of that year.
I can't find this show anywhere in the USA... every time I look I just come up with the movie... can somebody please post some clips of John Cleese as Lacrobat?
I can try to find someone with a scanner and scan mine. When I found it at HMV in HK it was by accident. I was going through the discount bins and there it was for 99HK$. The time before I saw it Virgin in Tokyo, but it was so expensive as everything in Japan is that I passed.
The film remake wasn't half as good as the original series (which has just been released on DVD although the film has been available for ages). Channel 4 once repeated the orignal ITV series and there was also an accompanying book to the series.
Hopefully, some other classic TV comedy series will be released such as the classic early Channel 4 schlock sci-fi/horror/conspiracy comedy series "They Came From Somewhere Else".
Good to see this. Though I thought I shoud tell you; it was released on video; although it was all the episodes edited into a feature lengeth version. I have a copy of it; although it's one from the 80s so the picture quality's a bit crap, but it is out there.
I think the film is just funny

channel 5 video in 1987? Channel 5 (in the UK) didn't launch until 1997.

No, there was a video company throughout the 80's and 90's called 'Channel 5' - they were bought up by Universal eventually.
So there was no connection between the company and the channel.

@lbjb247 I had one too, a newer release with decent quality but I've gone and lost it.
Been looking on the web sporadically for a few years and I've finally found a place to download it :P
