i like it... i may just have to try get this working with a friend myself... is there any works actually for guitar that Reich wrote besides electric counterpoint?
i kind of like the amount of overtones bouncing around, listening to reich's drumming in the car you can stop focusing on the playing and just hear the pulse
I'm a Steve Reich fanatic everlooking for the originals. I have to change my opinion: the guitars are as good as the marimbas thanks to this fantastic players.
i know you don't mean to but that's basically damning with faint praise... i mean c'mon. "most accomplished and tasteful"... try this, fuckin awesome. i'm glad you guys exist to remind people like steve vai that they suck
and your knowledge of what steve vai really does and sounds like is enough for you to conclude that steve vai sucks because you have decided to compare him to these two nice gentlemen that plays a song by steve reich and they don't sound alike, therefore one must suck? It must be steve vai because ... ?
@rascalrascal Steve Vai doesn't suck, he merely likes a different kind of music than you do. He's an incredible musician, and you have no right to claim otherwise. Personally, I'm not much of a fan of Steve Vai's music either. My only purpose here is to condemn close-mindedness.
Well, this piece doesn't really incorporate phasing. They play identical patterns in different phase relationships, but they don't actually phase into them as in pieces like Drumming or Piano Phase. Don't get me wrong, Nagoya Marimbas is very difficult, probably even more so than the phasing pieces.
Originally for two marimbas - called (surprisingly) Nagoya Marimbas. It's on a CD with City Life and Proverb (surely the most exquisite piece Reich has written). Don't know if the guitar transcription has been recorded.
definately not the most exquisite, well in my opinion. others like this exist such as vermont couterpoint, new york counterpoint and electric counterpoint with the same compositional structures. three tales and tehillim are possibly the most exquisite in that respect
Listen to 'Different Trains'. It is a string piece, that was offensive to me at first, much like this piece is to me...then it just simply grows on you and you cannot get piece out of your head.
Reich's music is hell to memorize. I remember having to create my own "shorthand" score with repetition counts when working on Piano Phase. But, hey these guys are great!
I love, the one, piece about the cats flying also when the saints do come marching in and the cheese is sliced at that one place. I think it doth paint everyone in a positive light.
This is an arrangement of a marimba duet. So if you are willing to shell out some money, the steve weiss music company has a website. They sell basically all this percussion and I know they have the score.
Being a percussionist and a marimbist, I can honestly say that I never imagined hearing this piece on any other combination of instruments besides two marimbas. But the two guitars also sound great!
lol.."BOOM" @4:00. Someone couldnt handle it. You guys were phenomenal

2x5 is a new piece he's about to bring out on CD. It features 2 5-piece 'Rock' bands (thus the name).
2 Guitars, Bass, Piano and Drums (with tape, or just doubled up for live performances).

It's Nagoya Marimbas...They play the guitars...better on 2 marimbas

Doesn't anyone else reckon this is where Foals got their influence from especially at around 4:10?
xantem1 2 years ago
Possibly, many modern artists have taken a lot of influence from Reich's music.

Nice. There ought to have been more damping of strings going on... some of the droning open notes obscured the lines being played.
