  • lol.."BOOM" @4:00. Someone couldnt handle it. You guys were phenomenal

  • This piece suits the guitar so well, and this performance if fantastic - makes me want to learn it!!

  • alguien q hable español m puede decir q es nagoya?

  • more greetings from Argentina! I bought the marimbas score and working on it!

  • This is magic, hypnotic.... ! I'm getting in trance!

  • just got the score... can't wait to get cracking!!!

  • did you guys learn this directly from the marimba score or is this an arrangement... i too will be learning it :)

  • Great piece, do you have the music in PDF? i´ve been looking for it while ago.

    Thank you

  • Really fantastic

  • GREAT piece and performance!

  • i dont know if the sound quality sucks ,but I kind of prefer the marimbas

  • i like it... i may just have to try get this working with a friend myself... is there any works actually for guitar that Reich wrote besides electric counterpoint?

  • 2x5 is a new piece he's about to bring out on CD. It features 2 5-piece 'Rock' bands (thus the name).

2 Guitars, Bass, Piano and Drums (with tape, or just doubled up for live performances).

  • It's Nagoya Marimbas...They play the guitars...better on 2 marimbas

  • I agree

  • Comment removed

  • Doesn't anyone else reckon this is where Foals got their influence from especially at around 4:10?

  • Possibly, many modern artists have taken a lot of influence from Reich's music.

  • @xantem1 foals are shite, they will never acomplish something this great however amazing they think they are

  • bello

  • haha i love their facial expressions!! Awesome piece of music though

  • these guys are great ping pong players.you have to see them wearing their hot shorts

  • ahaha

  • the performance was amazing, but in my opinion the room is way too live to be able to appreciate every nuance of the playing.

  • i kind of like the amount of overtones bouncing around, listening to reich's drumming in the car you can stop focusing on the playing and just hear the pulse

  • dou you have the scoreee? please share it!!

  • Excellent performance. Absolutely love it.

  • veramente bravi!!!

  • Ode to the digital delay.

  • no, this is 100% analog (physical) delay, long long time before digital delay was invented :)

  • except actually like the exact same time but whatever

  • @agamemnonc this piece was written in 1994, a long long time after delay was invented

  • Bravissimi!

  • Simply brilliant piece of work by Reich and very well performed here by the Gothenburg Combo.

  • IS this piece called Nagoya Guitars or is it a (fantastic) rendition of Nagoya Marimbas?

  • The latter. It is awesome though.

  • This is the first video in a while that I have witnessed to show a full five star rating with multiple votes...

  • very very good...awsome

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • I'm a Steve Reich fanatic everlooking for the originals. I have to change my opinion: the guitars are as good as the marimbas thanks to this fantastic players.

  • very good congratulations

  • Bravo guys! A most accomplished and tasteful version of a piece of music well suited to your instrument. Enjoyed listening to your performance.

  • i know you don't mean to but that's basically damning with faint praise... i mean c'mon. "most accomplished and tasteful"... try this, fuckin awesome. i'm glad you guys exist to remind people like steve vai that they suck

  • No.

  • @rascalrascal

and your knowledge of what steve vai really does and sounds like is enough for you to conclude that steve vai sucks because you have decided to compare him to these two nice gentlemen that plays a song by steve reich and they don't sound alike, therefore one must suck? It must be steve vai because ... ?

  • @rascalrascal Steve Vai doesn't suck, he merely likes a different kind of music than you do. He's an incredible musician, and you have no right to claim otherwise. Personally, I'm not much of a fan of Steve Vai's music either. My only purpose here is to condemn close-mindedness.

  • bravi bravi !!!!

  • I love those miniature ironing boards

  • This is one of the coolest things ive seen in a while. They make it look so easy.

  • its pretty good! phasing takes a lot of practice and they pulled it off well.

  • Well, this piece doesn't really incorporate phasing. They play identical patterns in different phase relationships, but they don't actually phase into them as in pieces like Drumming or Piano Phase. Don't get me wrong, Nagoya Marimbas is very difficult, probably even more so than the phasing pieces.

    Anyway, great performance.

  • this thing is cool would like the notes for it

    good job

  • wow this is cool, the minimalism we did at school for my music gcse is no way near as good it was just clocks ticking

  • i cannot find a recording of this!

  • Originally for two marimbas - called (surprisingly) Nagoya Marimbas. It's on a CD with City Life and Proverb (surely the most exquisite piece Reich has written). Don't know if the guitar transcription has been recorded.

  • definately not the most exquisite, well in my opinion. others like this exist such as vermont couterpoint, new york counterpoint and electric counterpoint with the same compositional structures. three tales and tehillim are possibly the most exquisite in that respect

  • It's just so surreal at 3mins. Wonderful stuff.

  • Listen to 'Different Trains'. It is a string piece, that was offensive to me at first, much like this piece is to me...then it just simply grows on you and you cannot get piece out of your head.

  • thnx for the tip, i really like it, but i see what you mean aboutit having to grow on you

  • I'm glad to find listeners with open minds and hearts. I find Different Trains to be very moving and haunting. Have you heard "Desert Music"?

  • formidable steve reich. Meme les français l'aime !

  • Nice. There ought to have been more damping of strings going on... some of the droning open notes obscured the lines being played.

  • I think you could make stuff out better if you were there, the microphone in the camera doesn't seem to be to good.

  • Reich's music is hell to memorize. I remember having to create my own "shorthand" score with repetition counts when working on Piano Phase. But, hey these guys are great!

  • very good! greetings from Argentina. how I can obtain that score? you can command to me?

  • hi there!

its published by "Boosey and Hawkes" in London

u can get into contact with them.

we are authorized to perform it on our latest album and on concerts but i cant share the score...

Good Luck! Hope you´ll find it. its a lovey piece!

    David/Combo

  • I love, the one, piece about the cats flying also when the saints do come marching in and the cheese is sliced at that one place. I think it doth paint everyone in a positive light.

  • @parras76 are you playing a transcription of nagoya marimbas? or do they have a version for guitar as well? (by the way, i love your performance!!!!)

  • @parras76 how about people like me who live in Indonesia, could i get the score also?

  • I want the score

Steve Reich is a bloody genius

  • This is an arrangement of a marimba duet. So if you are willing to shell out some money, the steve weiss music company has a website. They sell basically all this percussion and I know they have the score.

  • wow, good! hi, do you know where i can look for scores?

    thanks

  • holy shit

  • WONDERFUL

  • Steve Reich wrote Nagoya Marimbas, David Tanenbaum transcribed it for 2 guitars... anyway, good music and good performance.

  • Being a percussionist and a marimbist, I can honestly say that I never imagined hearing this piece on any other combination of instruments besides two marimbas. But the two guitars also sound great!

  • very nice 5*****

  • very good :D those footstool things are so cute!

  • Those aren't footstools: they're Yoda camping chairs.

  • simply lovely.

  • needs more marimbas

  • hahahahahahahahha i agree with this comment

  • Beautiful performance!

  • awesome!

  • this piece is not suited for 2 guitars.

anyway, very good musicians, and very good arrangement

  • oh this is wonderful sounds great just like the original nagoya marimbas

  • wonderful

  • Wonderful Reich!!

  • Originally written for Marimba. I love steve reich. This arrangement sounds excellent.

  • great sound...!

  • Lovely. 5 stars once again!

  • Simply wonderful!!!!
