That is because Mexico is not really what you'd call a First World Country, let alone an International Hub. Spelled is just an accepted slang variant. Such as "hey". Granted it doesn't register the need for a correction, but as the correction was pointed out it should be acknowledged. I would personally have let him use slang as the internet has far worse interpretations.

the main thing is that until relatively recently people could spell words as they wished (ie Shakespeare). In the end what happens on the internet/cellphones is that in order to shorten the length of a message, words are condensed. Later->ltr, Laugh out loud->lol, ect. this happens in common language as well. Ever used a LASER pointer, or have a ship use RADAR? People only use full words to be formal, abbreviations occur naturally. Best example yet: God Bless you->Goodbye
