Julian was unplanned, John was immature (early 20s) and his career had just taken off like a rocket. Also, John was bringing heavy baggage from unresolved feelings about his own father who abandoned him and his mother at age five. I'm sure as John matured he regretted his failure to parent Julian as he should have. It's amazing that Julian finds forgiveness for John. He appears to have inherited the sensitive, thoughtful aspects of his father along with the strength. Beautiful boy himself. :)
in the PBS documentary LenoNYC there's an audio clip of John Lennon saying how he never got to known his son Julian, how it was like 'having a strange child in the house' but later as a teenager Julian had a better relationship with John. Julian later said he forgave John because he realized how impossible it would be for John to care for him- he couldn't quit during Beatlemania, and he wasn't ready to be a father- John said "Julian wasn't a planned baby, therein lies the difference"
@muse54 No. It's just that his father neglected him in the years he was with that disgusting pig-faced chauvinistic female dog, and treated his half-brother better than him. But, it took some time for him to somehow forgive his father for not spending time with him often like he should. He still loves him but it's kinda hard for him to respect the father that acted as if he didn't exist. He managed to love him though.
@muse54 He specifically said that he didn't have respect for him "as a father". You can have respect for someone in different realms and not just overall.
@muse54 I think your seriously missing the point of the tshirt. He's wearing it because firstly: Yoko has been trying to wipe his and Cynthia's existance out of John's history and secondly: critics always acted like Julian didn't have the right to use his birth name. When he wore that tshirt Yoko was trying to prevent his cd Photograph Smile from being released because Sean had his first Cd coming out. They now have a more peaceful relationship and seem to support eachother better.
It must have been hard for Julian, especially early in his career where everyone expected him to carry on his father's legacy. Also, Julian looked and sounded much like his father, so much that some listeners thought songs like 'Valotte' were lost John Lennon tracks. He must have also found it hard to go through life having people tell him how great his dad was, when Julian obviously had different feelings.
One of the biggest myths involving Julian and Sean today is that they are rivals and don't like each other which is horribly far from the truth. Julian and Sean love each other, they always have. Even after Julian went on TV and bashed Yoko during the fight for his inheritance and John divorcing Cynthia for Yoko, Sean and him are still close. I would dare say that perhaps they are closer than most siblings, partly because of the standard they are held to (which is a pretty unfair standard).
john seemed like a complicate guy, he was this and that. i can understand why he wasnt teh best father around. he seemed spontaniouse, he lived in teh moment, when hes all happy with yoko and sean, i understand how it would be hard for john to give equal love to julian, him being the child of his ex, making things a little odd i would assume. but then again on julians half, i understand why he might have hated john as a dad, but of teh times they DID hav togethr julian may had mixed feelings...
I can't imagine John Lennon, when confronted with his own failure to be a loving father to his firstborn son, not acknowledging it and doing something about it. That would just be out of character.
@Keruaran in one of the last John lennon interview, he said he was renewing his relationship with julian and was hopeful for the future, but then u know what happened in Dec. unfortunately
I can't help thinking that if John Lennon really comprehended what his absence and coldness was doing to his son, he would have been sorry and tried his best to make amends, to try and change things between him and his first son. And I'm sure that had he lived, this would have happened, because when your son grows up, he's going to confront you sooner or later anyway.
I first learnt of The Beatles through ABC's cartoons. I was 6. They were so amusing to watch, being a child. Like it happened to Sean with Yellow S, I thought The Beatles were a cartoon. I didn't find out that they were four real lads until one day, when I asked my father if he had seen this cartoon, and he told me, amused, that he'd seen the real ones, too. I was excited to suddenly discover that there were real counterparts to the cartoon's... Gentle Julian is how I thought real John to be!
Man, I love this guy. I always have. I don't care who his voice sounds like. That's physiology. It doesn't make an artist. The spirit inside is what touches us, what makes an artist. You can't teach it, you can't inherit it. I can feel Julian's soul when he sings and it's beautiful. It touches me.
did you check out his myspace page? there is a few songs that will be on his upcoming album. Look up Julian Lennon on myspace. You can hear his music there.
You have commented almost my exact words of many of my comments. Meaning that Jules does have his OWN self in his music. And I do believe if listeners allowed it, they would understand his soul. He sings from his heart and soul. And yes, he does have genes from both parents. Good combo! I've been on Myspace and FB where he blogs often enough so we know whats up. Clearing Jules is a wonderful human being. <3
He seems to have a great outlook despite all the madness he went through. Understandably bitter but forgiving at the same time. I dare say I think he'd be greatly admired by his father if he were here today.
No matter what goes on Julian...remember that your music has touched a lot of people and you have made the world a better place just by being YOU! Merry Meet and Blessed be Julian..I'll always be a fan!
I wonder where I can find some excerpts from this audio from this "concert" of Julian that was playing in the background!? Especially SPACE? That is my favorite song of him? I never heard this song in a concert
Yes, the resemblance at :52-57 IS eerie. (And is it just me or does it look eerily like Sean Lennon at 1:14-15? I wasn't sure for a second there who I was looking at.)
he has such a sad look in his eyes

How can he not have respect for his father when he obviously enjoys wearing a shirt that said Lennon and proud of it? I think he is confused.

His last like. When people come up to him and say, "We love your Dad etc." And Julian says "You don't know the half of it" It's true.

The "concert" is from the Stand By Me video that followed Julian on his first tour way back in 1985. Hard to find but a joy for true Jules fans.
