Ha! Reminds me of when I used to listen to this while playing Elite all night on my old Sinclair Spectrum, to add atmosphere, 1986, in a place best described by another Floyd song.. "..for all the time spent in that room, the doll's house darkness.." , tucked away in the some lonely woods of Suffolk, England. Still not sure if I am glad those times are over and everything is so vastly different now. They had a certain undefinable quality that's now lost for good, like the song itself.
It is about the existential thoughts of astronauts just before liftoff, during liftoff, climbing ferociously and inexhorably through Earth's gravitational pull, and after main engine cutoff the weightless drift into free space. Can't you just feel the main thrusters burn through the atmosphere and the floating into uncharted territory just after the crescendo, mid-song? This is one of the most imaginitive creations I have ever heard, next to Careful With That Axe, Eugene. Give that a listen.

Shut up hipsters, there is no deeper meaning to this song. And it isn't from Ummagumma, it's from A Saucerful of Secrets.
