Why show ancient photos of when you were young and attractive at this point? It just makes the thing sadder. Then the part where she is wearing a gold turban reminds me of Cher! Her voice has lost most of its power and as a former fan and a person who was often mistaken for her, even I have to say 'it's time to retire'. Her genius was in the interpretation of the musical writings of others; this piece is lackluster. She is just not a great songwriter.
I appreciate and enjoy Joan but... this version just doesn't have the guts, grit, the honesty that Tom's does. Still it is indeed the message, it you get the message better here I'm glad you got the message.
Just to finish my "bitter" posting: So tired of people "getting" Tom Waits decades after his releases! So scared that people will "get" Tom Waits in real time and he will become a celebrity! So thankful to Tom Waits and especially to his wife Kathleen Brennan for still making great music and keeping it out of the mainstream taste.
The important thing is the art - the truth. Tom Waits and Joan Baez are not irrelevant - and I don't suppose Joan Baez is at all worried about fame or making money. She, and Tom, are artists. And if their music, or that of real artists (as opposed to entertainers) ever becomes 'mainstream' then the world will have become a far better place.

2009, JB squeezing some depreciated dollars out of Waits's song. According to the legend, she used to sing her own protest songs. The song was released by Waits in 2004, clearly as a song about the war in Iraq (please note that I didn't use the words "protest" or "against",it is just a "matter of fact" song, the greatest thing about him is that he speaks the truth and leaves the interpretation to others. There comes the voice of protest five years later, irrelevant as a bicycle without wheels.
Joan Baez is the greatest interpreter of songs ever. I've been following her career for over 40 years and she is amazing - her version of this song is absolutely stunning.

Probably the only Tom Waits (not Kathleen Brennan) song Joan Baez could sing without butchering. I have to laugh at the Americans who think this song is about "Supporting the troops" though.
I think i know how you feel. i loved her from the age of 14.the first time she ever sang in Israel.35 years later and that feeling is still very real.
Azz, non ci avevo fatto caso,le mie solite figure da ...pirla (eufemismo!!), cmq, bravo, ora ho visto la tua età...bravo, eppoi dicono che i giovani ...sono mammoni...un cazzo!!!!
I heard her sing this in concert a week ago, and it is SO powerful. This time more than 4000 haven't lived to see that day after tomorrow, and more than ten times than many wrongfully killed on the "other" side.
Thank you BobRock87...Beautifully done! This song is on her new album that will be released late summer/early fall '08. I have already heard several cuts and it is her best in years. Joan Baez is the Queen of Folk Music. Long live the Queen!
Thank You so much, this song haunts me, in it's simplicity it is so beautiful. Miss Baez like the true Starr she is, gets better and better with time.
Waat a beautiful video montage you have created here! This song is so hauntingly beautiful, as so many of Joan's songs are. I appreciate this tribute (of sorts) that you have made here. It is amazing that Joan has been singing and "activating" for close to 50 years now! And this Tom Waits penned song, which hopefully will be on her next studio album to be released next summer, shows how she is as powerful as ever!
Does she have a new album coming out next summer? That would be wonderful! I've played DARK CHORDS and BOWERY SONGS into the ground. Desparate for new Baez music!
Hello "old friend". :) I think that our paths crossed many years ago on a Baez fan site. The new album, being produced by Steve Earle (with several songs that he has just written for Joan, is slated for release sometime between June-August, 2008. Joan has recorded a song for a Judy Collins tribute album, collaborated with Sharon Isbin & Thea Gilmore, and recorded "Little Boxes" for a TV show. She has been busy!(And sounding better than ever).
Hi Dave! Yes, I remember you well. I think we traded some tapes of various Baez music back and forth. Hope you are well, and thanks for the info on the Steve Earle-produced Baez album. SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO!!...I had heard about the album of Judy Collins covers (I understand Dolly Parton and Rufus Wainwright are also on it), and that sounds wonderful too!
I've been a devoted fan of Joan Baez for many years. This, I believe, is the nicest compilation of her photos that I've seen. I love the song you selected and many of the photos are new to me. Thank you so much !
Beautiful in every way!... thank you BobRock87

I was originally captured by the rawness of the version by Tom Waits. But this is a true counterpoint; it is equal in both its beauty and sentiment.
For only the lucky will hear this the day after tomorrow.

The gold turban reminds me of someone who is taking chemo.
Seems like she never got over the broken heart suffered at the hands of the unwashed phenomenon.

I disagree fman. Throughout her career, Baez has mostly done covers of other's songs. She merits her celebrity through her interpretation of them.

Fair enough, my comment was more pro-Waits than anti-Baez. I have nothing against the bird,I never mistake the original for the imitation.
