The Europeans were in Africa for less than 100 years, 100 years maximum. It has become cool and trendy to blame absoloutely everything on the Europeans regarding Africa. But why does nobody care to mention the Muslim Ottoman Empire, who were in Africa for the best part of 600 years? Colonialism was a pathetic way of spreading industrialization to the foreign world. It pretty much ruined Africa if you think about it. Ever read up on African empires? They had a much better standard of life than Africans today. Why? People ususally attribute every invention to white man without knowing that some where invented by black Americans. Moreover, scientific discoveries are collective effort of the world community but led by the west. Is it only the white people that work in the western research laboratories? No. Therefore give every person the credit of his contribution. White man is at the top but others are also involved, including the excluded black man. Very important to note.
Most often people hurt by the criticisms of the western society say, as a fight back, that Africans had nothing but huts, and in their thought Europe has always been the way they see it today. Africans had huts and more complex structures as well depending on the need and comfort of each particular society. They did their things according to need and had no set standards as the white man has imposed standards on everything today. Also, nationhood in Europe is a modern phenomenon.
People should not compare African developement of those days with the present day European developement. Europe has not always been the way you see it today. The tall buildings, planes, cars, sophisticated weapons etc are of recent invention. Even though Europe was already ahead of Africa by then because of the industrial revolution shortly before their arrival, the gap was not as it is today. Most of the technological marvels of today happened within the last hundred years.
For those Africans who don't know, many of the things the white man told you he brought to Affrica predated his arrival. In many cases they copied. In some they destroyed those they didn't understand their uses while in some they imposed their own if they already had it. I know the history of my community before the white man came. The stories are not so much different from the modern civilization but people will not believe me here.
Africans were good for nothing yet Europeans came to take their agricultural products. How did they know how to farm? They had no medicine before the arrival of the white man. How did they survive sickness for ages? We have no history but my community know their history from beginning till end. We have no writing but my people have been using Nsibidi writing for ages before the white man came. We had no guns but my community used guns to finish the British soldiers severally when they came.

Historically A large army usually takes over and converts the tribes (like the Zulus)but when you don't have "one people" things get divisive. The poverty in the third world is because of lack of tech relative to increase in population.
The Africans had their own imperialism. The Zulu commited huge amounts of genocide all across Southern Africa. South Africa for instance by the Boers, settled on largely unoccupied land and purchased land from tribes. Africa was no where near as populated as it was today. Almost under no theory of ownership does just walking around an area make you own it. The Europeans made the place better in terms of material conditions. Poverty in Africa is not because of Europeans.

You already know how Africa is blast rich with natural resources, WHY is the European getting richer and the African getting poorer while these are HIS resources that HE should mainly benefit from? Having natural resources does not mean a nation will be rich. Japan has almost no "nautral resources" relative to other countries but yet they are prosperous because of tech, intelligence, and specialization. They are not meaningless. Without tech on cannot mine or use resources the most efficiently. Ownership is not concrete but fluid. People treat others differently. It is known as in grouping and out grouping. Just as the Zulu treated other tribes differently.

I don't like this documentary very much, the narrator says what is essentially the same thing at least three times without really explaining what he means. What about western democratic systems renders them unsuitable to a particular continent? People should not compare African developement of those days with the present day European developement. Europe has not always been the way you see it today. The tall buildings, planes, cars, sophisticated weapons etc are of recent invention. Even though Europe was already ahead of Africa by then because of the industrial revolution shortly before their arrival, the gap was not as it is today. Most of the technological marvels of today happened within the last hundred years.

Historically A large army usually takes over and converts the tribes (like the Zulus)but when you don't have "one people" things get divisive. Most people were not enslaved sorry. And there was slavery already in those areas. The British actually helped end the slave trade. Most of the natural resources the natives didn't even know existed, much less how to mine and use them especially in Africa. There was a net gain to most colonies. However Marx himself backed British intervention in India because it would lift the material conditions of India up through industrialization, create a working class that would faster lead to communism he thought. The resources were not "stolen" in most cases since they didn't know of them or use them in most cases. Investment came back to those countries as well from the Europeans. The poverty in the third world is because of lack of tech relative to increase in population.

The Africans had their own imperialism. The Zulu commited huge amounts of genocide all across Southern Africa. South Africa for instance by the Boers, settled on largely unoccupied land and purchased land from tribes. Africa was no where near as populated as it was today. Almost under no theory of ownership does just walking around an area make you own it. The Europeans made the place better in terms of material conditions. Poverty in Africa is not because of Europeans.

They named them their own because they conquered them.However, they did keep some native names as they did in North America for cities and such. We were just discussing poverty in Africa and how it was not caused by Europeans and some reasons why colonialism happened. 97% of major scientific figures from 800BC to 1950 came from the West.

Having natural resources does not mean a nation will be rich. Japan has almost no "nautral resources" relative to other countries but yet they are prosperous because of tech, intelligence, and specialization. They are not meaningless. Well Japan became the world's second largest economy post imperialism. Norway is successful because it has a high index of economic freedom. Welfare and government spending by itself to not make a country rich. Better production methods do. Rich natural resources will not make a nation rich itself. And actually there were 2 story buildings in Africa, maybe not made of stone, but there were! The ancient Empires of Mali were thriving before Europeans ventured there or are you going to say they're not 'Pure Africans' or attribute their advancements to the Europeans?

The technology the colonialist (IMPERIALIST) brought with them exploited and destroyed the cultures of the African people and there way of life and its affecting them to this day. Colonialist went to Africa to steal as many resources as possible in a effiecent time for there King's and Emperor's in Europe. 3rd world countries we see all over the world today (Latin America, Haiti, India) is from a direct result of European colonialism.

Colonialists logic in steeling and exploiting the indigenous, was that they were sitting on too many natural resources that can be used and the indigenous populace was to incompetent to not allow it to be used (BY THEM). So in result they exploited the indigenous instead of intelligently figuring out how everyone could win by peaceful trades. Instead now we see 3rd world countries all over the world because of a direct result of European theft and murder or COLONIALISM.

@LTDreams That question is easy. All over the world 3rd world countries suffer because of the result of European Colonialism. Africans were stripped, exploited, enslave, murdered and castrated for there cultural connections. When the Dutch, French, British and Spanish arrived in Africa, they preached to Africans they were bad because they did not prey to there WHITE JESUS. Once Africans believed it, dictatorship formed and they exploited there own. All from the result of European colonialism.

I don't like this documentary very much, the narrator says what is essentially the same thing at least three times without really explaining what he means. What about western democratic systems renders them unsuitable to a particular continent? If the Romans had instated democracy in Britain would it have functioned effectively? if it did, would this because it was in the same continent as Italy and more to the point, Greece?
I don't get it.

Much of Asia was subjected to European colonialism and imperialism as well. Why have those former colonies prospered while Africa has not? African tribalism was far more divisive to begin with and exploited by the Europeans while Asian feudalism was about loyalties and territorial divisions rather than the cultural animosity of African tribes.In the end, European imperialism in Asia was likely unifying in that it wiped out old feudal lords under one government while Africa was further divided.

I'm telling you that cultures and races are not different from each other that is fact. You are subcribing to a outdated view of humanity in regards to race. Similar to Darwinism which refers to every race evolved from a different animal spicies and that's BULL. By your view it seems you agreed with European Imperialism which to this day have created 3rd world countries in Latin America, Haiti, Africa and so on. Races need to work together not against each other if humanity is to advance itself.

The muslims world say that sharia law (Cairo agreement) is human rights and therefor reject the UN version of human rights. I respect the muslims opinions and they way of life. Do you?

Muslims- Arabs/Africans and the Chinese were using a lot of science and technology. that would take centuries for Europeans to implement because of the ridiculous suppressive ideologies the catholic church had. way back when, African kingdoms have shared wonderful skills and had fruitful trade with Europe...until they got greedy.
