Their earlier music was much less commercial and kicks ass as does RTF's early stuff. Another great is David Sancious' Transformation SOL.

@1oneandatwo I like AH and all, but I can see your point here, it does sound like "random" notes at times to some people and its not for everybody, i never got how just because you're not a fan of something, automatically your IQ is low? That list is great (although Hendrix isn't exactly up there), but Shawn Lane uses some of Holdsworth's techniques too.
I've been listening to AH since abt 1978 and the sad fact is that just about the only people who listen to him are guitarists, or, rather, guitarists who want to play fast. And a lot of those 'fast' guitarists don't really like his music but just want to cop his licks to put over a rock background. I don't know many other non-gtr musos who listen to him either, tho most will say he's a brilliant player. It's a mystery.
His music just all sounds the same! He uses those same ambient chords and scales in every song, his songs all sound almost identical. Really if you played one of his songs for an audience, and then played a different one, I doubt anyone in the group could distinguish the two. Not only that, his scales chords etc, all sound like shit. So you pretty much have, the same awful sounding music, being played over and over and over again. Who could like this?

@Samsgarden I agree to some extent. I think that maturity has a lot to do with variables like phrasing and touch that change from style to style. Killswitch Engage is an example of a band with some really great playing, and yet they really don't have ominous overtones to the presence or music.

I've been listening to AH since abt 1978 and the sad fact is that just about the only people who listen to him are guitarists, or, rather, guitarists who want to play fast. And a lot of those 'fast' guitarists don't really like his music but just want to cop his licks to put over a rock background. I don't know many other non-gtr musos who listen to him either, tho most will say he's a brilliant player. It's a mystery.

His music just all sounds the same! He uses those same ambient chords and scales in every song, his songs all sound almost identical. Really if you played one of his songs for an audience, and then played a different one, I doubt anyone in the group could distinguish the two. Not only that, his scales chords etc, all sound like shit. So you pretty much have, the same awful sounding music, being played over and over and over again. Who could like this?
