Prematurely blaming the wrong thing for a plane crash leads to more plane crashes. That's why a good investigator works so hard to track down the real causes of an accident. Hans Reichel wasn't a good investigator. He could have killed thousands of people with his pigheaded stubbornness and obsession with irrelevant regulations. Reichel deserved punishment for his foolish actions. But we should all be thankful that Captain Thane never gave up. The German government needs to apologize.
Seeing as several people have now replied to my top comment post to say I should have listed all 23 victims, not the football ones, I've decided to make a second post listing the other 10.
RIP - Alf Clarke (Journalist), George Follows (Journalist), Tom Jackson (Journalist), Archie Ledbrooke (Journalist), Henry Rose (Journalist), Eric Thompson (Journalist), Willie Satinoff (Racecourse Owner), Ken Rayment (Co-Pilot), Tom Cable (Steward) and Bela Miklos (Travel Agent).
Maybe the German investigator was still sore about loosing the war: a former Luftwaffe pilot investigating a former RAF pilot. The investigator finally got a chance to shoot down his enemy 15 years after he landed for the last time.
the pilot was a coward for not going back to save people. He was only concerned about himself and that was from a survivor, not a German! During the war this "Ace" probably shot down 15 year old student pilots....Das Boot all over again!
@skipsassy1 Captain Thain DID go back to save people. He climbed back into the aircraft to retrieve two handheld fire extinguishers, stopping momentarily to tell Rayment that he would be back for him when the fires had been dealt with. He then stayed beside the aircraft and tried to put out the fires until the professional fire crews arrived, despite knowing the aircraft could explode at any moment. To save trapped survivors you first of all need to prevent them from burning!
The plane hit slush at the end of the runway, but as for the pilot after 2 failed take off attempts he should've canceled the flight until the weather cleared however we might never know since these old planes lacked Black Boxes
RIP - Roger Byrne (1929 -1958), Duncan Edwards (1936 - 1958), Liam Whelan (1935 - 1958), Tommy Taylor (1932 - 1958), David Pegg (1935 - 1958), Eddie Coleman (1936 - 1958), Mark Jones (1933 - 1958), Geoff Bent (1932 - 1958), Frank Swift (1913-1958), Walter Crickmer (Club Secretary), Tom Curry (Trainer), Bert Whalley (Chief Coach) and Donny Davis (Talented footballer, journalist and cricketer). @DLPBurke Who are you describing as overpaid footballers? Footballers' wages in 1958 were nothing like what they are today, and Man United paid their players lower salaries than many of the other clubs!
I enjoy these episodes and want to thank you for taking the time to upload them. I hope this series continues to document some these older accidents as well as the more recent crashes.
He didn't take off the first two times, as I said for whatever reason. The wings weren't de-iced though all the other pilots felt they should. He was inexperience with those engines in those conditions. He was pushed for time.Evidence about slush at the 1st hearing was that it was less than 1 cm. The reported British tests on this do not say how deep the slush was to cause such deceleration but this was taken into account by the 2nd hearing. Again I say his was the only plane to crash.
'The difference between the possible and the impossible is only a matter of man's determination' - what like taking off with an iced wing? At the end of the day he shouldn't of even tried.
First off, it's not "shouldn't of", it's "shouldn't have". Second, this crash was clearly not due to an accumulation of ice on the wings. Eyewitnesses, as well as the pilot said the aircraft lost speed. Ice doesn't do that. Had the crash been due to ice, the aircraft wouldn't have lost speed, it would've kept accelerating, but without generating sufficient lift.
@MarcXW Well he shouldn't of tried a third time after aborting twice, and having everyone disembark and then get back on wouldn't of helped with ice. He might of took off before the slush if he didn't have iced wings anyway. His 'determination' to take off was a mistake.
@ChorltonBrook What? Pilot of that plane did nothing wrong, it was proven that there was snow which slowed him down, there was no ice on the wings and only Munich airport was to be blamed. And then you call him coward and idiot. Why?
@ChorltonBrook Well that kind of engine problems were common to that type of plane. During first tries he aborted the takeoff because of engine problems way before area with too much snow, so he could not notice it. After that maintenance person told him to just reduce power of the engine for a moment if it happens again and then increase and takeoff without aborting. There would have been no problem without the snow
@ChorltonBrook So IF you actually watched document carefully you would know that engine thing was just common thing and did not cause this crash, but snow caused and there was no way for pilot to detect it during two takeoff runs before as he did not yet enter the area with too much snow. Most of the runway was OK, only that last part had too much snow.
@Pvjinflight I find it hard to believe that the ice wouldn't come off the wing after a crash. I noticed that his was the only plane not to de-ice. I noticed even the passengers knew it was chancey after trying twice.I noticed that even more ice built up during re-embarkation. And I know that his was the only plane to crash. Nuff said.
@ChorltonBrook Wrong, did you even watch this complete episode? Official investigation first said that it was pilot error, but later it was found that snow caused it and in UK pilot was officially given his reputation back although Germans never admitted that they were wrong.
And he never flew again probably just because he was first suspended for no reason for many years, and he would have to be trained again after that...
@Pvjinflight It lost acceleration during the first two tries, that is known. These happened before hitting the slush. He was unused to using those engines at that altitude for take off and had to be instructed just before the crash. Did it lose lift or speed the third time? I'm no expert but I imagine that the airflow's altered with the increasing speed which occurred? This plane had a wing very different from modern planes so it's impossible to compare their behaviour when iced.
@ChorltonBrook It did not lose acceleration during first two tries. It had simple engine problem common with that aircraft type, but it did not much affect acceleration.
Third time it lost speed way after that engine problem happened again. If they had ice it would slow them down constantly, not just when reaching some exact speed.
And behavior of wing when iced is not that different with todays planes.
@Pvjinflight For whatever reason it failed to lift-off the first two times. He didn't understand why until newly instructed (why try twice if he didn't know why? That's dangerous anyway). It tragically crashed on the third attempt despite the new instructions. Different wings will behave differently, sometimes very differently, to ice.Eg to compare the effect of ice on the Elizabethan to a 747's would be wrong. The ATF saw it fail to lift.
@ChorltonBrook Did you even watch the episode? They did not even try to lift it off during two first times, just aborted the takeoff because of that engine problem, so there is no evidence about lack of liftoff during those times. During third attempt everything was going normally and they followed procedure to pull back power on that engine with problem a bit, and then increaced again. They were accelerating normally until end of the runway with loads of snow that slowed plane down.
@ChorltonBrook No one else crashed there that day because their planes could takeoff before area with lots of snow. But because of that engine problem that had nothing to do with the pilot they needed more runway to use, and because of that they entered area that had snow which slowed down the plane.
@julienalh He couldn't fly that plane well enough and crashed. Having to get extra instruction before the event shows that he wasn't experienced in those conditions & in that plane. The fact that he didn't de-ice doesn't mean he did the right thing, it means the opposite. The British had their own reasons just like the Germans to pass blame. I remember what it was like then. Some still are. He was never exonerated. Sticks and stones : )
@Pvjinflight I just think it would be a more balanced programme if it had the German's interviewed as well. It showing Hans Riechel behind a desk in a darked room makes him look like Gestapo.
@ChorltonBrook Sorry, I don't buy it. You're implying anti-German bigotry on the part of the filmmakers but the facts don't support that charge. They clearly stated it was Germans who provided the testimony that supported the pilot's version of events. Hans Reichel was just a petty small-minded bureaucrat who couldn't handle being wrong, probably due to misplaced pride. Therefore he was accurately presented that way in the film. The fact that he was German is irrelevant.
If it's irrelevant that he's German why is it mentioned along with nazis, luftwaffe and the war several times? Have you not read the comments here and seen how many are bigoted? This feeling is entertained by the programme. Is this show sold in Germany do you know?
It's not a question of arrogance, it's just a simple fact that air crash investigation was in it's infancy when this accident happened. There were no voice or data recorders on G registered aircraft at the time which could have proved beyond doubt that the aircraft slowed down after V1. Ice would have stopped the aircraft taking off at V2, but in this case they never even got that far as VR (119kts) was never reached.
How the heck could anyone be able to tell that there was ice on the wings from that grainy black and white photo? The investigators should NOT have based any conclusion off of that photograph. That was ridiculous.
i work at an airport as a runway inspector/equipment operator and my job is specificallyy what this crash is all about. slush on the runway is a definite no no and no plane should have been allowed to take off unless the entire lenght runway was inspected and cleared for takeoff. it was the airports fault 100% and i would be fired if this happened at my airport
@amitj78 I checked a scene in which there is a lot of dialog (the interrogation of Captain Thaimes). There does appear to be a 250-300ms sync difference. So I went back to the source video and checked it, and that too appears to have the same difference. My guess is it appears out of sync because of the different accents in use here. If you observed a more noticeable sync difference, could you post the exact time on the video in which you observe this?
@amitj78 After digging around it seems uploading a large flv file to youtube causes it to go out of sync. I'll reencode it in a different format and reupload it within the next few days.
@kinglagos No, I was unable to find a proper codec to maintain the quality. I will be re uploading all the 3 episodes as 6 parts to resolve the audio sync issue. I can't say when i will be doing this. It will probably take some time.
@maydayseason11 i would recommend .F4V files instead of .FLV or .mp4, but .F4V (and FLV too) really relies on a good encoder - i even have problems with the adobe media encoder, ffmpeg is the only thing that works proper, but you need to fumble on the parameters to get a good result
@hotfire1944 I have tried ffmpeg, but not with f4v format. I'll give it a try. I have tried some 40 different formats and settings, so I'm not really very enthusiastic about this. If it doesn't work out i'll go back to 6 part episodes from the next episode. That way I can maintain the quality and keep the audio in sync. Seriously, Youtube should work on it's algorithm for processing of larger videos.
@sparky47807 Well said. Today's athletes are rarely people to look up to for the youth or anyone else. Of course there are always exceptions, but only a handful. But let's not be too jaded. There are still heroes in the world, and I am certain some of today's athletes would have done the same thing. I just think people had a greater sense of a community and duty to society in the post WWII years. Maybe we will return to that someday.
they should do an episode from the plane crash of the euro hockey team that crashed like last year

@ChorltonBrook Blah blah Germans were lying all time.
Pvjinflight 1 week ago
@Pvjinflight I just think it would be a more balanced programme if it had the German's interviewed as well. It showing Hans Riechel behind a desk in a darked room makes him look like Gestapo.
ChorltonBrook 1 week ago
@ChorltonBrook: Perhaps. The actor also had a good pucker factor going. Unfortunately, he'd have been well over 100 at the filming of this.
puncheex 1 week ago
@ChorltonBrook Sorry, I don't buy it. You're implying anti-German bigotry on the part of the filmmakers but the facts don't support that charge. They clearly stated it was Germans who provided the testimony that supported the pilot's version of events. Hans Reichel was just a petty small-minded bureaucrat who couldn't handle being wrong, probably due to misplaced pride. Therefore he was accurately presented that way in the film. The fact that he was German is irrelevant.
icemachine79 3 days ago
If it's irrelevant that he's German why is it mentioned along with nazis, luftwaffe and the war several times? Have you not read the comments here and seen how many are bigoted? This feeling is entertained by the programme. Is this show sold in Germany do you know?
ChorltonBrook 12 hours ago
@julienalh At that time that amount of slush wasn't seen as a problem, for aircraft like this, by airports. They were not liable.

@julienalh The Brits had there own interests aswell.

@ChorltonBrook You're an idiot! It's obvious the cause was slush & airport runways have been changed to reflect this risk.
1) The 5mm of ice found by German AA was insufficient to stop this type of aircraft taking off.
2) The wings were warmer than other planes thanks to de-icing being on prior.
3) The British investigation was NOT run by the government rather by AA. - Do your research before making stupid comments!
4) German AA had a vested interest in their airports reputation.

@Pvjinflight You really should ignore ChorltonBrook, all he's succeeding in doing is pointing out to the world that he's an idiot.

@MarcXW Yeah, it was due to slush bulidup on the runway, slowing the plane down, causing the plane to not get airborne.

It's not a question of arrogance, it's just a simple fact that air crash investigation was in it's infancy when this accident happened. There were no voice or data recorders on G registered aircraft at the time which could have proved beyond doubt that the aircraft slowed down after V1. Ice would have stopped the aircraft taking off at V2, but in this case they never even got that far as VR (119kts) was never reached.
turricaned 1 month ago 2
How the heck could anyone be able to tell that there was ice on the wings from that grainy black and white photo? The investigators should NOT have based any conclusion off of that photograph. That was ridiculous.

i work at an airport as a runway inspector/equipment operator and my job is specificallyy what this crash is all about. slush on the runway is a definite no no and no plane should have been allowed to take off unless the entire lenght runway was inspected and cleared for takeoff. it was the airports fault 100% and i would be fired if this happened at my airport

Unfortunately, the audio on this video goes out of sync after about 15-20 minutes. Please fix if you can, uploader.
amitj78 1 month ago
@amitj78 I checked a scene in which there is a lot of dialog (the interrogation of Captain Thaimes). There does appear to be a 250-300ms sync difference. So I went back to the source video and checked it, and that too appears to have the same difference. My guess is it appears out of sync because of the different accents in use here. If you observed a more noticeable sync difference, could you post the exact time on the video in which you observe this?
maydayseason11 1 month ago
@maydayseason11 OK the sync difference gets worse as the video goes on... I'll see what I can do.
maydayseason11 1 month ago
@amitj78 After digging around it seems uploading a large flv file to youtube causes it to go out of sync. I'll reencode it in a different format and reupload it within the next few days.

@maydayseason11 did u reupload it?
kinglagos 1 month ago
@kinglagos No, I was unable to find a proper codec to maintain the quality. I will be re uploading all the 3 episodes as 6 parts to resolve the audio sync issue. I can't say when i will be doing this. It will probably take some time.
maydayseason11 1 month ago
@maydayseason11 i would recommend .F4V files instead of .FLV or .mp4, but .F4V (and FLV too) really relies on a good encoder - i even have problems with the adobe media encoder, ffmpeg is the only thing that works proper, but you need to fumble on the parameters to get a good result
hotfire1944 1 month ago
@hotfire1944 I have tried ffmpeg, but not with f4v format. I'll give it a try. I have tried some 40 different formats and settings, so I'm not really very enthusiastic about this. If it doesn't work out i'll go back to 6 part episodes from the next episode. That way I can maintain the quality and keep the audio in sync. Seriously, Youtube should work on it's algorithm for processing of larger videos.

@amitj78 Damn straight. That man is a hero in every sense of the word. It's a shame athletes today don't have that same kind of quiet humility.
sparky47807 1 month ago
@sparky47807 Well said. Today's athletes are rarely people to look up to for the youth or anyone else. Of course there are always exceptions, but only a handful. But let's not be too jaded. There are still heroes in the world, and I am certain some of today's athletes would have done the same thing. I just think people had a greater sense of a community and duty to society in the post WWII years. Maybe we will return to that someday.
