Oh I love Portishead, Sigur Ros, Slowdive, Placebo, My Blood Valentine, Catherine Wheel, Pale Saints, Loop, Mogwai, and all the others.
But to be fair, sonically they all bleed together. Not that I'm trying to prove the validity of American Post-Punk (or Gen X. if you will), but European bands kinda tend to just steal whatever the America underground is into at the time and turning it on it side, calling it something new. (Blues> Rock, Punk > New Wave, Grunge > Shoegaze)
Yeah to put the real list together is kinda pointless cuz it'll always change through age and experience, I meant more as a generalization. My five fav 80's right now would be (in no order) Smiths, Daniel Johnston, Husker Du, Jane's Addiction (most would call a 90's band but two best albums are 87 and 88 respectively) and Black Flag
(My make up band for Jane's Addiction, even though I totally stand by their 80's credit, Pixies)
VH1 version was aired in our country and i've to say, that with some parts removed, Albarn's interview is really put out of context, i mean the line where is he talking about the english world as he feels lost in it - that is right after for tommorow without all the previous information.
for anyone who doubts the relevance of suede - watch this. head and shoulders above their contemporaries. their appearance at the brits must be one of the angriest, most subversive performances ever. i would love to say that i recognised this at the time, but like everyone else i went seamlessly from suede to blur and oasis. only now, with the benefit of hindsight, can i see how brilliant they were. the best 90's band by some distance.
To call Suede the best band of the 90's is just retard. They weren't even the best band on their label. Ride blew Suede right out of the fucking water. "Today Forever" was probably the best 7 inch released since "William, It Was Really Nothing." That they are not mentioned once in this documentary is beyond ridiculous. It should be called "The Smiths, and British drug-pop."
@diedahero well how unnecessarily aggressive. I was also a ride fan but they had a limited appeal. Suede paved the way for guitar based rock to become the dominant musical force in the 90's. Unfortunately most of it was shite. Suede's first 3 albums - and their b sides - were class. Head and shoulders above most other bands of the time and the only band from that time that i still listen to regularly.
awesome

The Smiths are great. Marr's guitar work alone is enough to make them one of the top 5 band's of the 80's.

The lead singer of suede looks like a dick.
