  • the first time I saw lewis black was on the stephen colbert show, I think, & he was talking about the atkins diet, about different diets for apple- & pear-shaped people, & he yelled, in his shaky-hand, snarling, raspberry-blowing way: "if you look like an apple or a pear, EAT an apple or a pear!" I was hooked from then on.

  • I went to see him about a month ago. He was great. We sat a few seats down from his parents.

  • ...as long as you know that logic is the real reason for why things are the way they are. The only thing that is invisible and looks down on everybody is christian beliefs.

  • Why do religous nut get so hell bent on proving their religous beliefs to those who don't want to hear it? (Mainly Christians) Seriously, your own religion preaches to you tolerance and understanding, yet many of you show neither of those. Many christians can't even listen to or believe in logic. Even though many times, it doesn't require you to believe in it. It's called physics. Your lack of belief doesn't mean they don't exist or that you don't use them. Believing in God is a good thing...

  • In my experience an overwhelming amount of atheists are EXACTLY the same.

    The point should be that Religion should be and remain personal. It's certainly not Christian beliefs that are the reason for people being 'looked down upon' as you concede when you say it preaches tolerance and understanding.

    People from all walks of life, religious and non religious groups; all have aspects that look down on other beliefs, picking out certain Christian groups for it is looking at it with blinkers on.

  • What was your experience? Have you even seen how many things in America are catared to christians? I agree that religion should be personal, but christians don't. They believe they should tell everybody, and that our laws should be based on thier beliefs. Example:Gay marriage is illegal. And if you tell them thier religion may be wrong, more often than not,they get violent. They can't stand to think thier religion might not be the right one. And if you need true life experiences, I've got a ton.

  • You are generalising. Most Christians are not out trying to convert people, most of them aren't violent.

    Some Athiests display exactly the same sorts of behaviour you have attributed to Christians, trying to tell everyone that god doesn't exist like they all want to be Dawkins.

    Of course laws are based on religion, people have always looked to a god for guidance and laws came with that. It's the reason you can't steal, murder or have more than one wife. America was founded on its principles.

    It also seems rather hypocritical that a country that says it supports freedom of religion actually has laws stating people of certain religions...or even more specific athiests can and cannot do certian things.

    The founding fathers of this country wanted a country where no one religion ruled.

    We are founded on the principles, you cannot commit in acts that opposes others freedoms and/or rights.

  • Actually MOST were religous, some very prominent members were anti-clerical which is different and these include George Washington, Samuel Addams and Ben Franklin (who were freemason- to join you must believe in a divine being), Thomas Jefferson (Jefferson bible).

    Many considered themselves Deists and in their speeches made remarks about how religion moulds moral fibre and gave course to punish the wicked.

    A Deep distrust of church Doctrine is what led to the seperation of church and state

  • The 1st amendment protects the freedom of religion, its not absolute, the supreme court has ruled against the use of drugs and the act of polygamy found in religious practices.

    The ONLY laws that actually have any effect on Atheists can be found in places like Texas and Tennessee where you have to believe in a god to hold certain governing positions. This is probably unconstitutional.

    You really can't complain that Christianity is dominant when nearly 80% of Americans define themselves as such.

  • As such, it's actually the constitution that makes Christianity appear so dominant. When you have so many Christians and the inalienable right to free expression it's bound to have more than a few outlets, Jehovahs witnesses even had their right to preaching affirmed by the supreme court.

    Factor in the fact that 59% of Americans say they probably wouldn't vote for an Atheist and you then you start to get a clearer picture of where the 'discrimination' is actually coming from.

  • It's certainly confusing but it isn't the discrimination of law that you have to be concerned with it's the laws that protect your rights as an American that also give people the right to 'discriminate' against you, the 59% (Gallup poll) are just one obstacle but they are the biggest.

    N.B Samuel Adams was not anti-clerical given his father was a church ombudsman, I included him as a mason and didn't read back.

  • The constitution was originally intentionally written without the mention of god or religious values in it. Christian ideals (i.e. the use of god on U.S. currency) was not inserted till relatively recently (in that case the 1960's).

  • To an extent I agree, see section 11 of the treaty of Tripoli.

    As I stated, they believed that religion moulded morality and ethics, including their own in the constitution.

    George Washinton even marked the finishing of the first amendment with a speech thanking God. The word 'God ' doesn't appear because they didn't want theocracy or the clergy picking leaders.

    Intentionally or not, christian values did influence the constitution as the writers shared these values.

  • But America is suppose to be about protecting the minority while satisfying the majority.

    In which case who is to say what America is supposed to be about? It attempts to be all things to all people, both documents evidently aim for the construction of a fair and just system for the people, and it won't always work out that way because it isn't always possible.

    Your arguments about Religion amongst the writers of the constitution, in the constitution and it's role in the country itself are a little scewed.

  • I'm not trying to offend you when I say that.

    All the evidence is their in contemporary writing, it's often forgotten because the people who like to make the 'atheist foundation' argument like to leave it out.

    Secularism was not a big concept in the 18th century, there was the 'Culte de la raison'and the ideas of Chaumette but it most certainly wasn't a concept that gripped the halls of the Pennsylvania state house in 1787.

  • the declaration of independence is not the constitution soooo. None of the rules or laws the USA governs itself by are in the Declaration. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are technically not unalienable rights, at all.

  • Sure it is. It's designed for people so simple minded that they actually believe there is an invisible man in the sky who is responsible for creating everything. They put their entire faith in a fairy tale bedtime story. People who actually have thoughts and are capable of critical thinking, realize that the idea of a God or Creator is extremely far fetched and not very likely.

    Actually if you read about many of the famous philosophers (Socrates, Aristotle, Nietzsche, Kant, etc.), very few of them were atheists; they opposed RELIGION, but by no means did they oppose FAITH. In fact Kierkegaard teaches that to have faith is BEYOND reason; that it transcends it.

  • Did you know 2 young Physicist got the Nobel for proving that the universe came forth from something smaller than an atom, essentially from nothing Read a book called 6 numbers if these 6 numbers were not exactly what they are there would be no universe. I am an engineer and every time I hear people talk about the things in the universe there is no other way It was made that way to be this way for us. No other place in a 100 million galaxies is even close to sustaining life.
