  • Can I use this mic with 1/4 plug in like a mic or do I need xlr cable?

  • Informative and nice voice!

  • Great demonstration, helped out a lot.

  • James from Metallica use this when they record.

  • ubbertroll13 seth rogen :D

  • i am going to buy this shit! hell yea! great singing btw. chyea

  • "HOLD ME CLOSER TONY DANZA!"

  • what pre amp? interface? thank you

  • Very good sing! also mic, I got one on order Ebay with a mixer with 150 db mic pre amp-- so I can sing on my you tube channel. I don't like the sound I'm getting now on here! You and others talked me into it! Nice job! Thanks

  • Great singer! :D

  • Will a mixer with a 30 to 60db mic pre amp work with it?

    Like my Yamaha mg82cx.

  • your speaking voice is really good, really, really good.

    don't sing

  • WHOA this is the first time i see a decent gearwire vid. well done but your guitar is out of tune!

  • SO awesome...total surprise when you started singing.

Does it have the same upfront tone as a condenser? Thanks

  • What preamp was this mic running thru when you recorded this??? & what was the input impedance of the preamp it was running thru?!?!?! Thanks!!!

  • what´s the difference between the sm7 and the newer sm7b? anyone?

  • Please change the intro. It's VERY annoying!

  • @chordanae FL Studio FTW

  • Going to get one of these, can't wait =D

  • Would you say it nearly catches 100% of the natural sound?

  • Why do I have to "mostly" sit through half a dozen crap reviews to get to one that covers what matters! Great review! Saw it, heard it, heard about it - fini. Thanks.

  • Great Video and Sound!

  • I'm a lot more worried with idea that for live performance with this mic, you need a Pre-amp. I've heard it a lot. Would i need a mic pre amp and a normal pa amp all together to get a loud and good performance live with this?

  • Hi, I have a home studio and I`m looking forward to buy this mic. I have an art tube preamp ... is it ok to use the preamp on this mic?

  • @born4failure YUOU WILL NEED THE PER AMP IF YOU WANT UR VOCALS TO SIT IN UR MIX THE WAY THEY SHOULD. MAKE SURE YOU GATE IT AS WELL.

  • I don't see what is so great about this mic. It's an application mic for a certain purpose. I'm amazed people would recommend this mic for studio recording. I'm amazed people would give it some sort of 'WOW' rating on zzsounds.

  • @GiveSomeAdvice because michael jackson used this mic in one his album... and sounded good

  • @ELNDJ Everyone can say that about any music gear. 'this artist used it' etc.

Go buy this instead of a real studio mic and see how good results you get when recording in the studio. Don't say I didn't warn you.

  • @GiveSomeAdvice i bought it used... and it sounds really great! better than the tlm 103

  • @ELNDJ U R OUT OF UR MIND. THIS MIC DOESN'T SOUND IN ANY WAY SHAPE FORM OR FASHION BETTER THAN THE TLM 103. I OWN BOTH AND YOU R PUSHING IT. THE TLM103 IS HAS MORE BODY. THIS MIC IS OK, AND PEOPLE ONLY GO CRAZY OVER IT BECAUSE IT'S THE MIC THAT MICHAEL JACKSON RECORDED OFF THE WALL, AND THRILLER WITH.

  • @MACKGORDONJR If I could afford it I would try it on amps.

Anyhow, sometimes it is desirable to have a dynamic mic like this one, whether it be it's excellent off-axis rejection or the specific sound it has. Like, I can't imagine the TLM 103, however excellent it may be, working in EVERY mix.

I have neither, but it still applies.

  • @MACKGORDONJR MICROPHONES ARE SERIOUS BUSINESS. PS, Michael Jackson even did Billie Jean on an /SM57/. There's a time and place for every mic; sit down, man.

  • @ELNDJ NOT TO MENTION HE HAD IT RUNNING THROUGH SSL BOARDS SO THE PRE AMPS IN IT WERE CRAZY, AND THAT WAS BEFORE PRO TOOLS AND THE ENGINEERS HAD TO SPEND HOURS GETTING VOCALS RIGHT. IT WASN'T EVEN MICHAEL'S IDEA IT WAS THE STUDIO ENGINEER THAT CHOSE THIS MIC.

  • @GiveSomeAdvice dude, thats becuz linkin park used it for their recordings.... :)

  • I just bought this mic as my first and only demo studio mic 3 months ago before ever seeing this video so I think I made a good choice. Thanks for the posting.

  • Great review video!!! I'm definitely thinking about buying this microphone!!!

  • HOLD ME CLOSER TINY DANCER

  • Nice review, me likes, just ordered an API 512c and finally a SM7B that I've been wanting for years now:D

  • LOL this mic sounds better than RL hahahahah

  • Mic sounds beautiful.

  • @wildnites558

    Michael Jackson's main vocal mic.

  • Thanks a lot for this review!

  • best mic ever!!!!!

  • He sounds like Jian Gomeshi.

  • Bloody funny, as always!

  • question is would it work well with a pretty bassy strong british sounds singing voice

  • lol where the microphone is twirling around at the start it looks like it's a prize in one of those gameshows

  • is this goo for death metal vocals ?

phil bozeman uses this so I was wondering :D

  • Which kind of preamp was used please?

  • James Hetfield Uses this mic. Well on St. Anger and Death Magnetic he did :)

  • did you cut your balls?

  • Excellent demonstration. Just bought this mic and this saves me the time of tracking each setting.

  • I want this mic bad.. I've heard it on a few people on youtube.. Ive heard it in alot of songs (rhcp, pearl jam, michael jacksons thriller).. pearl jams song daughter allegedly used it almost everything including vocals and guitar which I love the sound of.. the only thing making me weary of using it is people saying it needs a great preamp to be any good.. a great river or something. I dont have 1000$ to shell out WTF will it be okay with some average equipment?(built in mixers etc.)

  • try looking at the Black Lion Audio Auteur

  • @POOPOOSOLDIER yah man should be. Ive NEVER found one bad review on this thing.

  • Good for scremo?

  • @mapexdevil yea thats why im saving up money for this,,,,cause my 20 dollar mic suks ass myspacedotcom/8bitskies

    Dx

  • @mapexdevil nothing is good for scremo... go die

  • good mic obviously, way too expensive for me though

  • This video was FANTASTIC. For people like me considering a studio mic for music vocals, this video was the BEST review I've come across yet -- written or video -- and EXACTLY what I wanted to know.

    Except for one thing.

The acoustic guitar we are hearing... is that sound "bleed" from off axis being picked up by the SM7B? Or is the guitar plugged in and mixed via other means?

Because ideally, it would be nice if what we hear on the video was not off axis bleed, you know?

    Cheers!

  • Oops! I just rewatched it and noticed that we were told that the guitar IS mic'd but we cannot see it because it is out of frame.

So the video review is perfect after all!

    Thanks, gearwire.

    5/5 easy.

    Keep up the good work.

  • The guitar in de video is separately mic'd with a small condenser mic, listen again carefully, he says it in the vid ;).

  • This is the definition of a good product review. Fantastic highlights of the products features and where it shines.

  • i want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • didn't know seth rogen could sing

  • @UberTroll13 LOL he looks so much like him

  • @UberTroll13 HAHAHHA.... THAT"S SOOO TRUEE!!!!

  • @UberTroll13 omg i was thinking that the hole way through then scrolled down near the end and just wow spot on dude

  • Laughed pretty hard when you look dreamily into the camera.

    Awesome demo!!!

  • By far my favorite mic for vocals. And I own/have used ones costing more and almost everyone sounds great on this mic.

  • im gonna buy this mic

  • good voice, lol not very strong thl.

  • This is the Mic Michael Jackson used during his early recording years.

  • if I were to purchase this mic for broadcasting purpose, is there a need for a 'shock mount' by chance or does it do fine w/just a normal boom/swing arm? thanks...

  • The mic capsule is suspended by an internal shock mount that "floats" it inside the large housing to isolate (or at the very least curtail) mechanical/vibration noise.

Suspending the SM7B from an overhead broadcast boom arm is what it was designed for.

In addition to the sound, not needing to purchase peripherals like a mic clip, pop filter, shock mount, etc. made me choose the SM7B over several other popular broadcast mics (Electro Voice RE20, Heil PR40, Sennheiser 421). A fringe benefit!

  • Thanks for the reply! The info provided is now making me re-consider what mic to get. Seeing as I would like to use the mic for podcasting, what additional equipment, if any, would I need to have if I elect to go w/this mic?

  • The next key piece of gear is a mic preamp that can provide the SM7B with the 60db of gain it needs. Most consumer grade mixers won't have enough, so look for an outboard unit. Try A DBX 286A or since you are podcasting, the ART Tube MP Project Series has a USB port (and costs under $100).

  • again, thanks for the reply! I'm checking out prices now for both the mic and the ART Tube MP Project series...

  • hmm dont worry i wont play any pearl jam for you

why the hell not ¬¬ xD

  • god im gona buy one of these and just fuck the shit out of it :) love this mic

  • These are awesome reviews, it's great to actually hear the product.

  • The look of satisfaction at 3:44 was brilliant.

  • lol. funny

  • @BusterFantastic That is HILARIOUS ... and so true.

  • Awesome, awesome mic :) -- out of my budget unfortunately :(

Any recommendations for a vocal mic (mostly speech) that also works at close proximity only (to get rid of fan noise, etc) for around $100?

  • Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers used that mic on the Blood Sugar Sex Magik album. You can check out their dvd funky monks and you'll see him use it.

  • So does serj Tankien of system of a down on Toxicity album.

  • These gear videos are nice, but that intro music is really, really lame, I must say. It's comical.

  • Comment removed

  • Sorry mis-read your comment - it is!

  • Nice presentation! Kudos to you! I have been checking out microphones and have just ordered the Shure SM7B. Now I need to decide how to get enough gain for the mic - it is a hungry bastard! What do you suggest? I have been checking out GRACE M101, TRUE SYSTEMS P-SOLO RIBBON and APHEX 207D. I am most likely getting the Grace M101. I read that there is a problem with sibilance with the other two. I will be recording voice, broadcasting. Any feedback on the gear? Love and Peace, Queen of Norway

  • The output is -59db, so yes, you will need a preamp with plenty of gain.

I used the Grace M101 during a mic shootout between the SM7B and an EV RE20 and it's a beautiful unit. However, If the price tag is a turn off for the Grace, another preamp for the SM7B is the DBX 286A.

  • whats better for recording, sm57 or 58?

  • Their pretty much the same thing except they have seperate polar patterns. Ones a Cardioid and ones a super cardioid. The SM58 picks up sound in a heart shaped radius. The other does the same thing except it is slightly narrower. Otherwise their essentially the same mic.

  • Great mics by the way, I would consider buying at least one of them.

  • i read that if you unscrew the top of the sm58 you have a sm57... is that true? what would be better for recording to my pc, like vocals (beatbox) and talkbox , no instruments or singing

  • There's more than one option for computer recording, however, if you want the best possible quality, I would get a firewire based computer interface with XLR ports and use a traditional XLR mic like the Shure SM58. Another option is to buy a USB mic like the Samson C01U or if you prefer handheld mics the Samson Q1U USB dynamic mic. Like I said before the SM57 and 58 are basically the same mic so maybe.

  • so a m-audio firewire would be better than a m-audio usb? somedude told me for recording use condesnor mics instead of sm58...is that true, i want to mailny record takbox, beat boxing, and maybe my keybaord using the amp? sm58 good enough or should i get a condensor mic?

what makes the firewire better than usb?? im using a desktop computer

  • Correct, a firewire have a faster transfer tare than usb which means more data can flow through it. As far as mics go it depends on the situation, in your case you would probably want a handheld dynamic mic like you would use if you beat boxing in front of a live audience. I would use a large diaphragm condenser mic with a pop-filter if you were recording normal vocals.

  • what does the pop filter is it the object they put over a mic...with fire wire and USB will i notice much diffrence in sound qaulity...im gonna use a desktop , i really appreciate your help!

  • Firewire has much better sound quality than USB, but if your on a budget, than a USB mic will still do. A pop-filter is a little circular screen that attaches to a mic stand and goes in front of a microphone.

  • what does the pop filter do....so is m-audio firewire any good...im afraid to get it becuase i read that the fire410 has alot of driver problems....but is m-audio good or is there somthing better for near the price... on ebay i seen the firewire 410 and fast track pro under 90$ (used) but i dont know any other "well used" interfaces....do you know any?

  • A pop filter reduces the amount of popping Ps and Bs. M-Audio is alright but there is other options like MOTU or Alesis.

  • alesis io2 any good... compared to a m-audio fast track pro or firewire... im trying to fdind somthing under 150 , i got my sm58 yesterday just need the interface

  • It's really up to you there's many interfaces out there, I would check their features, look for some reviews, and see which on is more in your price range. Also check which ones are compatible with the software your using and your operating system.

  • alright thx, for firewire and usb will i notice a huge diffrence in sound qaulity?

  • With usb you will notice some hiss and a flatter sound, with firewire you will hear less hiss and a fuller sound.

  • ahh okay swee thx, is there anything better then firewire that connects to pc?

  • I don't know of any interfaces that use faster cords besides, some expensive ones that use TRS cords.

  • TRS provide better than firewire?

  • Yeah, but those interfaces are like 2 to 4 thousand dollars so the best option for you would probably still be firewire.

  • I've seen several statements made by you that are false. For now I'll just comment on the 'TRS cords' TRS stands for Tip Ring Sleeve. It's nothing more than a cable with a 1/4 jack plug. The reason why high end converters are expensive is because they are high end converters. The TRS cables are used (amongst other cable types) to connect to the patch bays and console.

  • Nice demonstration video. Thnx.

    Love and Peace,

    Queen of Norway

  • I just ordered mine. Plan on using it with an FMR RNP.

  • I just ordered this mic, thanks to this video;) thanks duude!

  • Thanks a heap for posting footage of this mic.

I picked up the Shure SM7B for voiceover work due to its excellent background rejection. Another noteworthy feature is that it has great shielding, making it ideal for use around or near computer monitors without interference. It does require a lot of gain, since the output is -59db. In my road kit for mobile recording, an ART Tube MP Project Series w/USB preamp was an affordable and portable companion, since it can push 70db of clean gain.

  • great mic. sound. Think i'll use this in the studio

  • He said "sort of" eight times in the first three minutes.

  • That was very informative. Owen sounds great singing, but that was way higher pitched than his speaking voice! Kinda shocked me. :-)

  • Great video man.

  • Good review. Really informative

  • Tiny dancer? I always thought it was Tony Danza. Ohwell..

  • haha i think im the only one who gets it

  • I like both... Proguitar is def better at some stuff, but I like some of the people in gear

  • ease up brother, ease up

  • wow, I really didn't expect Tiny Dancer. Awesome review.

  • FUZZFACE can really sing lol..thanks for the review
