  • i found the sd-1 more versatile than the ds1, it's just too spiky

  • nice clean sound , full of smooth midz. pedal takes it to the next level. just got the same frm a friend, luv it

  • Comment removed

  • ds-1 fo da win

  • I have both pedals, but I play mostly metal and hardrock, so I use my DS-1 more, but I use my SD-1 more than my ML-2 "([metal core] I know I play metal but the ml-2 is mainly for Nu-Metal, but I use the DS-1 the most because it is great for any genre of rock)

  • Im using the BOSS metal zone, but i'm a bit off from metal these days, and play more rock/grungy stuff. Now to my ears, the DS1 sounds very similar to the metal zone only a little weaker with the Gain. i might be wrong with this statement, anyone here who has both pedals and can tell me whether the sound of the DS1 is similar sounding to the metal zone? the type of fuzziness?

  • Does it give as good sound on Squier Fender?

  • @ComedyActionGuys SD-1 sounds good with Squier strats and vintage Gibson SGs too. In my experience with it, it is a good inexpensive pedal and if u set your amp and pedal right, it sounds best. There are better overdrives, but the $60 SD-1 is working pretty well for me.

  • 9 people likes guns n roses

  • great demo man! sd-1 sounds like a real amp!!! and ds-1 is cool as well! actually even after using marshall shredmaster i still get back to ds-1 distortion coz it sounds like an amp as well!!!!

  • I have the same table as you :)

  • I don't know which one of this two to buy, btw which when sounds better and is the SD-1 the only one with asymmetrical clipping or does the DS-1 has it too?

  • @dieandgoaway I'm not sure about the ds-1. I know the ds-1 is asymetrical clipping.

It depends on how you use it. If you have a tube amp that you can turn up and you want to get some more crunch for solos and stuff I would say ds-1. For a smoother pedal thats good a lower volumes I would say sd-1.

  • @coronet67 I meant the SD-1 is asymetrical clipping

  • Does compressor erases noise?

  • @jeeiioo No, it can make noise louder with heavy compression. Lower settings you don't hear much difference, but it doesnt erase noise. The best way to handle noise (hiss, hum etc) is to figure out what is causing it. Second best is a noise suppressor like the Rocktron Hush

  • @jeeiioo actually it adds noise but it will give you sustain...

  • can the sd-1 work as boost for ds- to play metal? Think of geting boost

  • I use the ds-1 for church on a drive setting close to zero. It's good and I get compliments about my tone but the sd-1 is the sound I'm looking for.

  • @tolleck me too but on a ds-2....

  • Its like comparing apples to bananas

  • Thanks a lot !!! Great test !

  • what does the compression sustainer do ?

  • @rrgert4 It sort of squashes the sound. If used sparingly it can smooth it out and make it ring longer. Heavy use it can give you a funky tone. Theres videos explaining it better than I can. Used before a distortion or overdrive it just makes it sound more creamy and tubelike IMO. Used on a clean tone it just makes it more even and chimey depending on the settings.

  • can you please help me !! What is better ? DS-1 or SD-1 ?? ( I play guns n roses a lot, and i want a sound like at slash :) )

  • Yeah, I have the Super Overdrive SD-1 and I love it. I would prefer to have it over the distortion because the overdrive has such a rich, thick tone and has a wide range of sounds. I like the SD-1 cuz of its fat, milky sound

  • @ThatItalianIrishGuy It's not a thick "modern" metal sound, but if you;re talking 70's, 80s or 90's metal a ds-1 might do the trick.

  • Would u use SD-1 for blues and rock?

Would you use DS-1 For metal and Hard Rock?

  • @EPICVOLUME101 Sure

  • @IgnacioLZ I own the Super Overdrive SD-1 for over a year. The drive has a great range and it sound like a tube amp. Great for classic rock. nice and old school.

  • @IgnacioLZ The DS-1 and Sd-1 would give a pretty good range of tones. You can run them together too to get some cool high gain sounds.

  • i'v used DS1 for years, question of tastes of course, but if you want a good sound from it, keep the TONE knob round 9 o'clock.. that's all, easy :)

  • 1:04 for Boss SD-1.

    1:53 for Boss DS-1.

  • These are 2 different things, and for different uses.

  • DS reminds of 14 year old kids with their first squier

  • This video is probably the best I've ever heard the SD-1 sound. If only all of us could make it sound like that, you must just have the perfect set up for it.

All of the SD-1's I've played (Taiwan and Japan) have sounded like saggy messes.

  • @zerosoma33 They are sort of mid-range mushy.

I've come to the opinion that overdrives really are for overdriving a tube amp thats already breaking up a bit. That way you don't get so much of the sound of the pedal.

  • He should on the 3 of them together... The sound would be great with the SD-1 at lower gain, boosting everything up

  • mogwai?

  • Nice comparo man... Simple consistent riffs that allow the listener to hear the difference in effect. Thanks.

  • Hmm shall i buy sd or ds?

  • @Guitar8870 I just modded my DS-1. I replaced one of the clipping diodes with an LED. It totally changed it. It's more of an overdrive now. It sounds good, I should do a demo.

  • @coronet67 Nice it will probably giv u many views but witch one ist best? cus the boss sd-1 is a good tube pedal right?

  • @coronet67 What exactly do mods do?

  • @CleverNameHere81 I need to do some more videos. So far I've modded two DS-1's and some other pedals. By changing various components- resistors, capacitors, diodes etc, you can change the sound characteristics of the pedal. You can give it more bass, more midrange, more or less distortion, different sounding distortion, etc. The DS-1 is a bit thin and nasally, but change a couple things and it's fatter and fuller sounding.

  • @coronet67 Thats really cool, thanks for taking the time to explain it! And what overdrive peddle would you recommend? All I have is a Boss Metal Zone and I try to get an overdrive sound out of it, but it never sounds quite right.

  • @CleverNameHere81 Try something that says overdrive. Like the Boss SD-1 super-overdrive, Tube Screamer, etc. The Behringer TO800 is supposed to be a copy of the Ibanez TS-808 which is the best Tube Screamer IMO. The Boss OD3 is really good too, but bit more expensive.

  • @Guitar8870 You cant compare them, they serve different purposes. Distortions are basically like adding a channel, overdrives sort of sit on top of your signal like a mask (if you kick an od on top of a clean channel you can still hear your clean tone clucking through)

  • @ShivaTheAuspicious You can compare any two things. You can compare a rock and a stick. To compare is to examine two or more things in order to determine similarities and differences.

  • @ShivaTheAuspicious So what pedal is best for slash tone probably sd1 cus i don't have a tube amp.

    Thanks 4 you support ///Mike

  • @Guitar8870 Buy both :)

  • hey i have a question, when you bought them did they came with a battery charger??? And cable? i'm going to buy the ds-1 and i need to know that.

  • @markingfeat hey, when you buy a pedal new and stock it only comes with the pedal and a 9 volt but all you need to do is have at least two cables and plug ur guitar in the input and the amp in the output and once you get multiple pedal you can chain them together with smaller cords, if you want an adapter i recomend using money towards a good boss bcb60 pedal board but it is around 150$

  • @markingfeat Regular Boss pedals just come in a box no power adapter. I've got a bunch of Boss and other 9V adapters, but I generally use my pedal board power (PB600), or rechargeble 9V batteries.

  • I know you're using your hands to turn the pedals on/off because you want us to see, but you could just say what you're doing and STEP ON THE PEDALS! You'll look cooler if you step on a little orange box, I know I do...

  • I've never used never used the SD-1 as a distortion. i've only used it to get more umpff out of my distortion pedals. also, these pedals really aren't that great with just regular cheapish amps. you really get some bitchin tones if you have a tube amp. the only downside is that tube amps cost a left nut.

  • @wickedwizardofspeed Yeah, a good tone is a combination of things.

I just got an LPB-1 that I am using for the same thing you use the SD-1 for- a bit of umpff.

  • Try slamming the input on your SD-1 by turning the level all the way up on the Compressor/Sustainer. Turn the gain on your SD-1 down to 9 oclock. Now you got some interesting tone!

  • boss ds1 and sd1 has a good team up!!

  • hay what charger you use for them?

  • @KhammettJpageAsmith You mean the power adapter?

I'm not sure. I have a bunch of them. I know I didnt use the newer Boss.

  • ds sd

  • what are they like together

  • @CMSpida I was thinking the same thing... break the rules man, put them over each other, put your amp onto the lead channel. BREAK SOME FUCKING CHAINS

  • Vote for Pedro.

  • @GuitarBlues3 You gonna eat your tots?

  • @coronet67 TINA EAT YOUR DINNER!

  • i dont understand the difference between boss pedals wats the difference between all the distortion pedals (ds-1, ds-2, md-2) and the overdrave pedals (OD-3, sd-1)

  • @sonofrock97 Check out Bossusa.com > click on the "Experience" tab > click "Interactive Demos"

  • @coronet67 The "Virtual Distortion Grid" on Bossusa might help.

  • i think the DS1 got better sound

  • You see, I avoided having to choose and got the OS-2 =P

  • @Z1mlock I think my next pedal will be the OD-3. I would pick up an OS-2 to try it out if I saw one for sale used somewhere.

  • Which one's best for Rage Against the Machine? And don't just say amp distortion! (my amp distortion isn't very good)

  • @ty2drew Hmmm. I guess the DS-1.

I just looked it up and he uses a Marshall JCM800 and no distortion pedals. Neither one of these will give you that exact tone, but either one might get close. Try having you amp with a light distortion and using an overdrive or distortion to add some more to it.

  • @coronet67 get the new st 2, its the new boss thats supposed to sound like a stack, called the power stack

  • if you have them both turned on does it just give you like really easy feed back??

  • the DS-1 has the perfect old school nwobhm sound, perfect for playing saxon like riffs.

  • how can you compare these? they should be used in series

  • @Billytalentrocks666 By comparing two things one can determine differences and similarities of two objects.

  • @coronet67 Fair enoughskys but thats just a definition, all i was sayin was you should have demo'd them together

  • @coronet67 They do sound cool together. Maybe I'll do another video.

  • @Billytalentrocks666 I think you're right, there's no "vs." if they're not used for the same function.

  • @Psylence6 I was thinking of it as a comparison.

    Something like definition #2:

    1. Abbr. v. or vs. Against: the plaintiff versus the defendant; Army versus Navy.

    2. As the alternative to or in contrast with: "freedom of information versus invasion of privacy" (Ian Hamilton).

  • which is best for metal?

  • @hasty1337 DS-1 is 80's hair metal. DS-1 is crunchy like a Tubescreamer.

Neither one is modern metal. The DS-1 will add more chunk to an amp than the SD-1

  • Both of these pedals sound better when used as a boost for an already overdriven tube amp.

  • @theguitarking00 Yeah, thats true. The SD-1 set to a light overdrive with the DS-1 after it sounds pretty decent too.

  • yeah well i like the sound and the vid....thanx for postn...

  • @brianeflanagan Cool thanks

  • I´m a big ds1 fan, but in this video, yeap, the sd1 sounds much better than ds1 ;)

  • you need a better mic the sounds sucks really hard my DS-1 doesn't sound like that

  • @wessel7076

Are you playing a Strat into a Carvin?

Do you have the settings the same on your pedal?

Did you use an SM57 into a Presonus pre?

Did you compress your file and then upload it to Youtube?

I understand the pedal may sound different in your bedroom.

The same pedal can sound and behave quite different on different amps and setups.

  • I think I like the DS-1 better.

  • selecting an effect or distortion particularly depends more likely in your preference...

  • the SD-1 is pretty good i had one from the 80's when it brokedown i played in a gig with a DS-1 from a friend of mine, it rueind my show it was so unplesent to hear although i played on my fender 212 amp and gibson les paul classic, in conclusion SD-1 GOOD, DS-1 EVIL!!

  • the yellow one is kinda cool. whatever.

  • the SD-1 sound sorta like an AC/DC sound

  • Hey, great video, I'm thinking about buying some pedals and I really don't what to buy, so this helps me a little. Thanks a lot! =D

  • Oh god , DS-1 is the most awful distorsion I ever heard , it sound like cheap 30$ distorsion. With or without mod , she still sucks.

  • @MrViv

It has it's uses. I think most distortion pedals now days are either overdrives or real heavy gain pedals. The DS-1 is an old school hair metal sound.

  • @MrViv i agree, it sounds really cheap and processed, VERY different from the tone's you get from high gain amps.

  • @MrViv thats because it is a $30 distortion, i personaly liek mine if i put it throught a valve amp, solid state its to muddy

  • @MrViv tell that to kurt cobain

  • @SuperQuin2010 You do realize at that time Boss made their pedals in Japan with significantly better QC and quality in parts, right?

  • @SuperQuin2010 ...and Steve Vai

  • @MrViv you must be using it wrong then

  • @MrViv

are you stupid or what ? DS-1 is one of the best pedals . Ask Steve Vai , Satriani , Malmsteen , and many others .. U need nice tube amp , ds -1 will shine .

  • @loggsoul john frusciante is another.

  • @MrViv hmm... thats why its the world's best selling pedal, has been for years, and is/was used by high profile players like Kurt Cobain and Tom Morello.

  • @sergeant137 Why it's a best selling pedal? Cause it's Boss , many guys buy boss as 1st pedals , and many buy DS-1 as 1st distorsion pedal , cause they are used by famous guitarists.. But the most cheapest gear will sound great betweek great guitarist hand (that remember me Steve Vai's video where he play with cheap guitar & amp & it sound amazing..)

I listen again this video & you dont have to be genius to recognize that Ds1 sounds really , really , really bad...

  • @MrViv I'd disagree. Through the right amp, and in the right hands, you can get a great sound. I use mine with a Vox Pathfinder 15, Boss SD1, Ibanez Tubescreamer TS7, Boss SD1, and a Squire HSS Strat. Although it's all budget gear, it sound good with tweaking. Granted the Pathfinder 15 is a VERY bassy and, and that really cuts down on how thin the sound is. You're not gonna be getting anything less than a harsh blues sound out of it, but for 80's/90's, and maybe even '70's it works quite well.

  • @sergeant137 It's your opinion , I made mine by testing this pedal on my Vox Ac 30 & heard on peavey classic 30. I build Tubescreamer clone for 20€ , & for me it's TRUELY better than this pedal who cost more than 50€.. You just pay the Boss trademark.. As you buy shitty Marshall MG.

  • @MrViv just trust me , and other 90 % of average and famous guitarists . Boss ds-1 is best distorsion pedal ever made .

  • @MrViv

Agree... my first pedal ever is a BOSS OS - 2. Its kinda shitty in front of a good clean tube amp, however, its exceptionally good in front of a Roland Jazz Chorus 120. Actually weaker pedals like that cannot be put together with good amp, as it will really make it sound damn damn damn bad.

  • 12:00

  • @Jooey89 Like 12:00 on a clock. Straight up, or if you consider that it goes 1-10 then it would be 5.

  • @coronet67 ok thx ;) I like ds-1 its really cool, its not very good but it's have something what i like ;)

  • Thanks for the great video comparison...i prefer the sd-1 as well...it just sounds more natural than the ds-1...but i hawe both and when soloing, i switch to ds-1...great combination

  • Is DS-2 better than the Ds-1?

  • I havent tried a DS-2. I think the DS-2 they tried to stick the DS-1 and SD-1 into the same pedal or something.

  • Hey. How did you get a tone like that in your SD-1?

  • I dont know. It's just through the clean channel on my Belair. I have everything at @ 12:00.

  • Now i get it XD

  • @joe62293 the guitar and the amp does it too

  • This is a great video I actually own a DS-1 and its like my favorite pedal. I use it for grunge like Nirvana and stuff. I'm not really sure what the blue pedal in the video does..... lol. The SD-1 overdrive sounds good and I might get one. I guess i need an Overdrive or Octave... maybeish? what ever they do... I also own the Boss Metal Zone and thats a great distortion pedal for the more heavyer stuff, but yea. see ya, peace out, & comment back at me if you want. I need ideas for stuff please..

  • I just got the BBE AM64 pedal from Guitar Center. $20! It sounds pretty good. It gets a good ACDC-ish, clasic rock tone. I think I might ckech out the Green Screamer next.

  • Cool I can get that sound from the clean on my amp and a Boss-MT2 or better no effects and lead 1 on my amp =)

  • i like the metal zone because it's a nice smooth distortion, i used to use the ds-1 and have the tone and dist sort of like chinese eyes, you know, like \ /.... not bieng rascist, just cant think of another way to put it

  • How do you like the amp for rock? I'm looking to get the VT50 with the 212E with the V30s, what do you think?

  • i am going to buy a ds-1 in about a month, it sounds awsome!!

  • They are pretty cheap now. Like $30 I've seen them

  • i love the sd1, into a dirty marshall it realy brings out some nice overtones, must get me a ds1 one day. i remeber when they where £30

  • I've noticed the price is going down, here anyway. For example, Musicians Friend has them at $39.95 and I've even seen them lower at some other online stores.

Just off the top of my head I believe 39.95 U.S. dollars = 24.9189122 British pounds. (Just kidding, I looked it up).

But dont you guys pay a bunch of taxes?

We pay no sales tax unless it's in the same state.

  • what happens when you have both the distortion pedals on when you play. sorry if thats dumb but my 14 year old self thats been playing for a year wouldnt know. does it just put too much distortion out and make it sound crap?

  • Yeah, you can do that. You can get too much but it's all just what sounds good to you. If you keep the gain low on both pedals you can get some awesome tones by combing pedals. Some pedals and amps even have multiple gain stages which is similar to using two distortion pedals. Thats how you get that fat sustaining tone. Some people will have one pedal on and then hit another one on for solos.

  • @Mattyhattywatty:

it is a pretty common trick to mix an overdrive on top of an already driven tube amp... it also works great in front of a DS1, you get more sustain, sweeter tones and well, higher drive... as long as it is not TOO MUCH... I recommend you check out the fulltone OCD, it is the best overdrive around... also the zakk wylde overdrive by MXR, sweet overdrive to punch a cranked amp, hope this helps

  • Carvin makes great stuff fairly priced...I own a PA system from them...

My brother's bass with active EQ just started giving him issues after 11 years of hard usage (stage and home)...

It still plays just can't activate the on-board EQ anymore without it squealing...

    Nice videos!

  • the same pedals sound worse in others video on youtube! Especially the overdrive pedals, the sd-1, the daddy O and the Ibanez dont' sound so good in other videos, but in yours they're so good, fat, warm! I wonder if it's because of your amps or guitars..

  • I think it's because I mic them seperately from the voice and I duck (cut out) the voice when the guitar is playing.

I think a lot of people use the camera mic or get bleed through into the voice mic if they use a seperate mic.

  • you could be right.. but even on the boss official site, for example, the sd-1 sounds worse than yours, I thought they were as careful as you about the recording.. (sorry for my english :P)

  • Hmm, well I dont know.

Maybe their files are pretty small so they load fast. You lose sound quality that way.

I just used an SM57 into a Presonus pre and recorded it in Sonar. Maybe my amp improved it and they went for a more flat sound.

  • what pedal is good for metal/thrash metal

  • Of the two the DS-1 distortion would be best, but it doesnt have the bottom end of some modern heavy tone. It's more of an old school thrash if you turn up the gain.

  • @coronet67 so for modern metal what would be good

  • @derdara152

I think what you're looking for instead is the boss metal zone or the newer metal core.. both badass pedals with built in EQ so you can dial up your tone accurately, plus lots of gain and a nice mid scoop for those pantera or and justice for all sounds, turn the mids a little bit and you get a great modern metal tone... definitely check those out... hope this helps..

  • thanks man

i just got both the sd and ds 1

but i am going to get a metalzone soon tho'

  • nice, and I forgot to tell you something, you might wanna check out the electroharmonix metal muff, it is also great for the sound you're looking for and is not that expensive crazy insane gain times 10+ EQ and top boost. I think is more what you need, there are also 2 smaller versions of this pedal, check them out too... cheers

  • Try putting the CS 3 in front of the SD1. When you engage both SD 1 turns into a distortion pedal and it sounds great :D

  • Yeah, check out @ 3:05

Since this video I''ve dialed in some great tones with the CS-3 in front of both the DS-1 and SD-1 by trying the recommended settings on the Boss site.

  • You also have some great tips on Lick Library's Guitar effects pedals DVD. That's where I found out about the CS3 to SD1 setting.

  • DS-1 sounds fizzy and digital. That's what it is.. a cheap distortion pedal. The SD-1 on the other hand is a nice pedal for boosting or getting some nice overdrive out of tube amps.

  • i bought a digital amp cuz im was retarded... but will the SD-1 sound just as good on it? i plan on going tube soon

  • A modeling amp?

Using a pedal like the SD-1 in front of a modeling amp or a POD etc, can make it sound more real in my experience. I often use a fairly clean Fender amp model with pedals in front of it for recording. It makes it sound less digital.

  • thanks a lot, i plan on buying the fender deville model amp as soon as i get enough money

  • This is somewhat pointless, it's kind of like you are comparing a phaser to a chous pedal. If anything, I would suggest using the sd-1 and the distortion, but having the sd-1 as a booster, which gives the sound a sweet tone.

  • Great. Make a video and we'll check it out.

  • witch one is the best to classic rock?

  • go with the ds-1. thats what I picked it for.

  • The DS-1 is more rock, the SD-1 is a smoother bluesy tone, like a Tube Screamer, SRV etc.

    The DS-1 is 70s rock

  • thanks:D

  • hi man great demo, i wanna ask you something i have a ds1, i wanna know if i can boost the ds1 with the sd1? i dont have a good amp yet so i need two dirty sounds, and i have seen a lot of pleople that use the sd1 fro boost the ds chanel of the amps i can do with the ds1? thnks keep on rocking cheers from colombia

  • yeah, I've gotten some killer tones doing that. I should make another video for that. If you dont go crazy with the gain, the overdrive gives a nice smooth crunchiness to the distortion. Really fat with lots of sustain.

  • thnks for teh answer man, that sound that you say is qhat im searching for, i would be really cool if you do that demo with the ds1 and the sd1 together thnks man :D

  • yea dude that sounds awesome , for the song round and round (RATT) which combo would sound closest to the actual recorded song do u reckon?

  • Maybe the DS1 with the gain cranked up and some compression in front? I'm trying to recall the tone. I might have to pull out the album on cassette.

  • does the pedal comme with the ac adapter?

  • Mine did not, but you might check with the store to see.

  • yea, idk how to check on musicians friend. they dont even mention it, so idk if it does. just in case, how big is the voltage for the pedal's ac plug in? im ight have some here in my house

  • the DS-1 is not "that bad" , I hated at first but the more you use it the more you love it . Its not hevay ,so,if you yant to play metal with this pedal i wont recomend you this one. The heavier you can get out of this pedal is for example any song of RHCP from THE ALBUM " ONE HOT MINUTE" ¿ sounds great right?. This pedal if for classic rock n roll , blues, 70s punk , pop , the only " minus point" is that is kind of noisy ,so , get sure to get a noise gate on your chain. Its adictive.

  • Cool. Actually I like it a lot more now than when I made this video.

With some compression before it into the right amp it's quite nice. It dosent sound great infront of the Belair, but into my Fender it is good.
