No, you did not just listen to music, you just witnessed an emotional war within a man expressed in a form of sound, noise isnt music, its an expirence.
@ihatemyjobman to quote Dilbert, "art is the transmission of one's inner most essence to another". art is made up of a tapestry of many different views. I never understood how people can call certain expressions of art "wrong".
Prurient RULES, end of story! Thanks for posting this man! I ( The Earwigs ) played a show with Dom back in 2004 and he is one of the coolest, nicest people i've ever met! Great sense of humor too! He kept asking if i wanna gonna do any of my old total shit/noise stuff! I didn't - ha!ha! His set was really short and awesome too say the least! All the best form outerspace .
"The Ultimate Rule ought to be: 'If it sounds GOOD to you, it's bitchin'; if it sounds BAD to YOU, it's shitty. The more your musical experience, the easier it is to define for yourself what you like and what you don't like. American radio listeners, raised on a diet of _____ (fill in the blank), have experienced a musical universe so small they cannot begin to know what they like. " Frank Zappa
Wow man, what they pass off as music these days. it starts out like its gonna be cool but then it dies. I have watched a few different videos of this and man, why they let a nutjob on stage is beyond me. There must be almost NO ONE out there that likes this shit. This is like Lightning Bolt but without the music part.
I'd like to see anyone who thinks prurient isn't good noise pull of what he does with the same minimal amount of equipment. And if you're dumb enough to think he can't play instruments check out Ashpool. So far as I know it's him doing everything and it's crazy black metal grind shit. Oh and he runs a record label and store too. Fuck. I hate how people try to justify not liking the most brutal kind of noise just because they're not really willing to give it a chance.
To be honest, it doesn't really matter what people think of Prurient, or noise music as a whole. These people will never get it, and I think it's an inherent part of someones character to 'get' stuff like Prurient; some people don't understand it, and those people go on to produce for Mariah Carey or some shit.
I like noise music, there just no good at it. Try Melvins Colossus of Destiny if you want good noise. I've seen this live and really it just comes across as a bunch of people who wish they could play instruments but refuse to take the time to learn how. It's like abstraction with no knowledge of form which is just a mess. IMHO
I don't think skill and enjoyability are completely disparate, as they do go hand in hand on some occasions, however, I do see what you're getting at to an extent and you have actually given some explanation as to why you enjoy this. You have just completely contradicted yourself however. You said, 'Music [is] pleasant sounds, but you also admitted that it is 'horrible noise'. So what is it. If you admit this isn't pleasant, how can it fit your definition of music?
You actually think i'm insulted. In fact, i'd argue that you're ignorant for not appreciating my opinion. What purpose does this horrible noise serve? Nobody can seem to tell me what they enjoy about this, so therefore, my opinion won't change. If you'd like to argue in a constructive way as to why this is worth appreciation, please go ahead, otherwise you can swear, and confirm my suspicions that you don't actually like this and are pretending to, to hold on to some sort of false individuality.
I appreciate your opinion myself. it's hard to justify noise as a genre because all of them have vastly different philosophies concerning it. The reason i appreciate and downright enjoy prurient, even more then other noisicians, because he is in fact conveying something. If music is the expression of emotion that words can't express, prurient's harsh noise is the expression of the stressed, bottled up, negative emotions that are in a clusterfuck in the psyche. That's my interpretation at least
This is complete nonsense. It sounds like a malevolent dentist drilling into your molars. Anybody with a miniscule amount of knowledge of music technology will know that this takes no skill whatsoever and anybody who claims to like this must be doing so solely to gain some hollow sense of individuality. Art at its lowest form.
So are you honestly saying that you enjoy this? Some schmuk creating horrible, ear destroying feedback? Also, what authority do you have to declare me "genuinely really dumb"?
Well, that's not exactly true is it? As the consumer, i'm fully entitled to voice my opinion on something that is uploaded to be viewed and discussed. You on the other hand have no knowledge of my background. Therefore your comment is nonsense. Secondly, you failed to answer the first question.
You remind me of all the 'proper musicians' I encountered at college, and I can pretty much read you like a book, so here goes:
- You possess no originality, or realisation of originality, which is quite clear
- You are probably the type of person who enjoys quaint, predictable 4 minute pop songs
- You don't understand art
Am I right? Of course I am. Your not dumb, you just don't get it, so go listen to nice, safe 4 minute pop Justin Timberlake. Its clear you dont wanna be scared.
If I was a Timberlake fan I wouldn't be here in the first place. The reason I searched for Prurient is because he is involved with Cold Cave, who I actually quite like. He does add unnecessary noise to the music however which often ruins it. I also find it quite funny that you believe you can 'read me like a book' because of some of these 'proper musicians' at your college. I would never class myself as a 'Proper musician' because I can hardly play a note. You need more time at college mate.
Iplayed a show with Prurient back in '04 here in Spokane and before i met dom, i thought he was gonna be a snobby prententious noise asshole . The guy was/is very cool, funny and friendly! I had a great time hanging out with him and enjoyed his short incredibly loud set! I've been doing my band, The Earwigs for 18+ years and do it because i love too create loud alienoise destruction musick . Many people do not understand 'noise' but that's cool with me! All the best! Great video man!!!
3 this is not the work of a "famous" artist, nor an artist who makes a livable wage off his art, so there must be something in it for him beyond small monetary gains doing something that youtubers think they could easily perform themselves (perhaps confusing "performance" with "talent show")
1. noise music isn't new. it's been around since at least the first decade of the 20th century
2. all vanguard art has always existed at the absolute fringes of popular expression, leading to the valid but utterly subjective question "but is it art"?
Hyper-intellectualization of Fernow's stage persona or live performance is no good for anyone. Let people take what they want from it, whether they love or hate it. There seems to be a clear divide between those who think he's a genius, and those that think he's a pretentious douche, and that is only fair. Being overly defensive about it or, alternately, aggressive in dissing it is for people who obviously don't understand what this movement is about.
Why do you guys care about this guy and his performance of what he does on stage? Is this a form of expression? I am wondering how acting like a 13 year old angsty emo kid throwing a temper tantrum after losing his chick pants is music, let alone listened to by anyone. Is the constant ringing in your ears causing delusion to make you unaware that its just a high pitched screech? What kind of drugs do you have to take to tolerate the noise? I am truthfully curious.
Well for me, being a noise musician is all about breaking down barriers and throwing all of your soul into music. It is a way of creating something beautifully hideous out of next to nothing.
i can understand how the histrionics could throw people off, but prurient's shows are really like a full body experience. he uses the whole of his physical and emotional self to corrugate the sounds into a dense monolith of noise (even if the premanipulated source emenates just from the mouth). he seems to manifest this by a kind of staged anger, like the two minutes hate in orwell. his exit is no joke though. dom's a nice guy in real life, but his post-performance self is unpleasant
(previous comment ct'd) and scathed by the emotional wellspring unearthed in the preceding minutes (he often hits or shoves people on the way out). thereby the performance itself is not just a musical act, but a kafkaesque transformation of character, more in line with a kind of Aktionist performance art than "rock star poseur shit". You may not be interested in this aspect of performance. It's definitely not everybody's cup of tea. It is, I must say though, far more fascinating in person.
No, you did not just listen to music, you just witnessed an emotional war within a man expressed in a form of sound, noise isnt music, its an expirence.
