West Africa did not have enough gold or other goods to trade for the crops. Slaves were chattel in West Africa, it came natural to use them for trade. The imported crops increased population significantly in West Africa despite the large number of people that left the countries as slaves. If they didnt trade, most of those slaves would have died in West Africa.

I read in a black slave history book by a white man author and said that african kings didn't sell other africans into slavery it was a European takeover and they took just enough to load on their ship so the extras were either captured on the next trip or simply wasn't needed. The author said that was just a way for white people not to accept the full burden of their wrong doings. Say the kings sold the africans to them so they don't feel as guilty for what they did.

But what everyone who make this statement fail to realize is that when Africans held one another for slaves it was only for seven years of servitude and released. Even if the slaves where kept longer they were not treated as animals like the white folks treated us. The white man tricked the Africans like they tricked the Indians. These comments on slavery are just ridiculous. Africa is guilty of more corruption, genocide, and exploitation then Europe, and blaming any of that on the Europeans is just wrong. They were corrupt long before the Europeans got there, and some still today. Another interesting fact, crops from the Atlantic slave trade actually helped Africa more then it hurt them from slavery.

Ok and so why couldn;t the atlantic trade have existed without slavery then? there was a lot of gold and other valuable commodities in west africa that's sale doesn't constitute an atrocity. Whether contact with europeans hurt or helped africa overall isn't the point of this song. It is that slavery was evil and some of its effects linger. West Africa did not have enough gold or other goods to trade for the crops. Slaves were chattel in West Africa, it came natural to use them for trade. And i know my comment has nothing to do with the song, i posted in response to the comments i was reading. The imported crops increased population significantly in West Africa despite the large number of people that left the countries as slaves. If they didnt trade, most of those slaves would have died in West Africa.

I read in a black slave history book by a white man author and said that african kings didn't sell other africans into slavery it was a European takeover and they took just enough to load on their ship so the extras were either captured on the next trip or simply wasn't needed. The author said that was just a way for white people not to accept the full burden of their wrong doings. Say the kings sold the africans to them so they don't feel as guilty for what they did.

Actually my grandmother is still living and my great grandmother lived to be 98 years old and my great great grandmother I believe to be around 95 years old. So that's not that far from slavery. It wasn't long ago before blacks could drink out of the same water fountains, eat in restaurants as white people and that was the age of my daddy's birth in 1959. You couldn't eat at Mc Donald's if there was white people at the table or anywhere; get your food and go home and eat.

I'm not saying that there isn't strife elsewhere. It's everywhere, but I do think we live in a country where it is canned, and in a sense regulated by our rich white government. Children don't see the difference when young. At a certain point, about the time that we have to start filling out bubbles to denote what racial faction we belong to, we are "taught" that we are different and thus, need to be compartmentalized into groups. I believe in other countries, the "strife" is on the ground level

(i.e.- The Bronx in the late 40's and early 50's) I believe a mixed race couple would be more accepted on the streets of Paris than on the streets of Birmingham.....or Atlanta....or any in the US really. We're the only country I know of that finds it necessary to classify and separate people. I've never heard of an "African-Frenchman", or an "asian-englishman". Once we start to classify and label things as different, we begin to separate and create these rifts which breed hate. Obama is in a wonderful position to bridge some of these gaps.
