Dave Brubeck himself, enjoyed a lot the ELP version. He always was and still is an open-minded person.Because of it,Brubeck is still alive and playing in the height of his 91 years of age.
if this is the isle of wight I was there but disappointed with the debut as elp didnt have the finesse of the nice. also, I think they played the week before at van dykes club plymouth.
coming from a Jazz background, I fuliy understand, appreciate and encourage re-invention and interpretation, but these guys walked into the Louvre, pulled out their Sharpie and drew a moustache on the Mona Lisa -- oy vey, already!
The problem is these peeps are jazz snobs. i happen to LOVE jazz and am very educated regarding all forms of music.I find jazz purists to be pretentious, and rude pisswads.
Also they are not trustworthy. They will f*ck you, your mom, and your sister if you let them. My opinion. Sure this version was a little left field and different, but thats what happens when your a jam band in the seventies. Bet Dave brubeck never smoked a joint in his life.
to all you "haterz" ....smoke a fat joint and listen to the man rip it on a Hammond organ.....anybody can play lounge jazz......this is 1970 it's called psychedelic music man get with it......go listen to Gates of Kiev 1971
Sad is what you have to read sometimes... Sad is talking about something you don't know what it is all about, or you are just unable to appreciate, while letting everybody know about your ignorance. Sad is thinking you can put Art left on the scale and difficulty on the right, so it's always better art that one which requires higher skills. Sad is closing your mind and ears to just one artist, album or style when there are lots of them "anytime anyhow anywhere". But keep trying, training is ok.
wow this is pretty terrible for ELP. you figure they'd do a better cover for such a great song but i guess they didn't know what groove was for this song
Actually, the piece was written by the saxiphonist as a practice run for the drummer to acclimate to the unusual timing of Brubeck's compositions. I am frustrated that I can't remember the saxist's name!!!
Oh for shit's sake ELP, how can you have the affrontry to not only change the time signature, thus negating the relevance of the title, but doing so wearing those horrendous outfits?? You silly, silly men! tarkus is wonderful though.
What's your problem? You have the Brubeck version (undoubtedly great). You have this version (also great in a different way). It's not like ELP doing the song displaced the Brubeck version. Or were you looking for a carbon copy instead of an inventive alternative?

@ComradeCrusty ...."Lounge Jazz"? Seriously? Get a refund on that joint.
If Brubeck is "Lounge Jazz", then King Crimson is rap.
