Being up front of future detractors of my comment...I know you can not compare Lady Jane to lady Gaga, but...Lady Gaga ain't got nothing on Barbarella.
I remember when I first saw Barbarella...the character, the enviroments, it was art from start to finish. I love it. The costume style inspires me for when I draw costumes for superheros.
With the costumes and styling i see some slight links to rome, very early spanish warriors, and opera. But its mostly Paco Rabanne who deserves all the praise i think, hes a genius.
I have a neighbor that looks like her. So damn pretty its hard for me to look at her. Unfortunately she is married. Her hubby is nothing special lookswise but a nice guy.
If you study art, you must see this film. It's not that others did not try to make exciting sci-fi images before this, but this is an unrecognised masterpiece of art. The film makers really believed in what they were doing and other work followed. Do you know films of the same artistic quality in this genre dating from before this time? Please tell us so we can follow the trail of sevelopment. (Any excuse to watch the film again!).
Didn't "The Final Programme" and "The Man Who Came to Earth" come after this film? It also used exotic sets as well as kinky characters!(do you think that will do it study-wise?)
That's a good point. What intrigues me about this film is that is manages to meld a range of genres in one film. I am thinking of these: science fiction, pictorial art, personal adornment fashion, colour art, materials art, graphical art, minimalism (clear definition of character of persons and objects), pastiche, fantasy, stagecraft, glamour, modernity (Barbarella is an example as an independent and dependent figure), eroticism; 60s style references. Worth looking at Jane Fonda biblioraphy.
Especially considering the films that she starred in before and after this one! "Cat Ballou" and "Barefoot in the Park" preceded it (Cat was fairly independent while Cory was dependent on her husband) and "They Shoot Horses, Don't They" and "Klute" came after it (a down-on-her-luck type looking for a second chance and an emotionally shielded prostitute)! She's currently working on a film called "The Widows' Adventures." Good luck on your project!
Thanks. "The Widow's Adventures" will be based on a novel and my guess is that Jane will play a post-60 widow who went blind in adulthood who goes on a road trip with her younger sister who can't drive (played by Diane Keaton). This will bring her back to an independent/dependent character I guess with a producer credit making her VERY independent IRL.
I was also thinking about the classic French novel "Candide" by Voltaire. Barbarella, like Playboy's Little Annie Fannie, could be compared with that naive but adventurous character. If you're looking for similar themes of this period with a male lead, try "O Lucky Man," "Caligula" and "A Clockwork Orange" and see what Malcolm McDowell did with kinky but interesting stories and characters.
luv the post: Jane's look so Vadimish, as in Roger's other wives the fabulous Deneuve and Bardot...then came the next one John Derek with his trio: Ursula, Linda and Beautiful Bo...a great instrumental......I guess fun things can happen in 3"s..lol ty 5*
Oh this brings back memories. I used to have this on a cassette (remember those?) called "An Hour of Superthemes" which was all Geoff Love versions of Sci-Fi theme tunes.
Rightly or wrongly, this is the version of the theme I most associate with the film, as this Geoff Love version was widely available in the years before the film itself was released on video.
Same here, I heard it on cassette as a child several years before seeing the film. The film version of the theme actually sounded slightly odd to me because I was used to hearing it without the lyrics.

Geoff Love has always been uneven.
Sometimes his covers are great, other times they miss by a mile.
