All religion and culture also changes over time. The reasons are practicality and changes in the way of life. In today's Global world it is not practical to spend say 80% of your resources immersed in religious rites. How would any country progress? Religion and culture are being simplified yes. Give them a poll and of course separatists will vote for independent. But what good would that do.

Hi Duscin, Tibet still has political prisoners. Tibetans still flee Tibet. Tibetans have been voicing their protest against PRC authorities in all form and expressing their loyalty to the Dalai Lama and his exile government.

Do you know many Tibetan families hang Mao Zedong's picture with Dalai Lama's picture together in their house? I have seen that by myself for many times. Hi, Yazeni. I think Tiananmen's Mao picture's meaning is very different from in Tibetan's home. I still recommend you to read something about Tibet before 1950. About Tiananmen 1989, it's another huge topic which is still influencing China a lot, i think it's wiser for us not to talk about it here.
FYI, my specialization is Pacific Asia with specific focus on Chinese history. So, I know what I am talking about Tibet before 1950 or the Tiananmen massacre of 1989. Yes, the two issues are different but one underlying commonality is a cry for freedom - Tibet from colonization and the Chinese students for democracy. No doubt one must support freedom. But the freedom should be for all. During the self-proclaimed freedom of Tibet by the then religious leader in 1913, was there freedom for 95 percent of poor, landless, suppressed peoples or serfs? Isn't it true that the religious leaders and Dalai Lama himself divided the society into three sects: Fudual Monks, Second class Lamas and Serfs, simply to suppress and exploit the 2nd and third class? peoples in the name of religious ruling? How can we forget these?

Tibetan could not simply gain the independence. To wage a revolution require the ruge amount of money, and a lots materials such as transports, media, communicated equipments, even weapon. And u need an organisation to organise those eqiupments and manpower, and u need qualified leader to lead and coodinate this organisation. That's it, if those tibetan really want an independent Tibet, they need is establish an opposed organisation in reality, probabelly financed by the West. seems impossible.

Tibet was part of China 700 years ago, if not, 400 years ago. There are ancient map of China, except Mongolia because it declares dependance.
Then after World War II, Tibet tried to declare independace like Mongolia. But this time China was under control of communists, so they got their ass kicked by communists.

Japan and the Middle Kingdom is about a state of war between 2 recognized countries. Japan did not win because they did not have support of the common people which continued to fight from the wartime capital of ChongQing. Regarding Iraq. OK, I failed to clarify my point. You are way off here. I did use Iraq invasion to justify anything. My point was that a western type democratic system do not work anywhere in the Middle East no matter how much resource you throw into it. At least not today. Thus an open poll that worked so well in developed western countries may not necessary work in poorer undeveloped parts of the world. That was my point. Also polls are not the only way to gather feedback.

To say that there is no self determination at all in Tibet today is not entirely true. Tibet already has automonous government. Do Tibetan today have all the unlimted freedom? Perhaps not. Do Hindu have all the freedom to have the caste system? No. Do Muslim have all the freedom to implement the Hudut laws? No. As in any country activity that affect national security would also not be allowed. Not any different then the United States. Or any country for that matter.

In today's Global world it is not practical to spend say 80% of your resources immersed in religious rites. How would any country progress? Religion and culture are being simplified yes. The Middle Kingdom is still a 3rd world country. Yes the justice system is still weak. But to say there are no channel for the poor to petition the government if all else fails is simply not true. Yes, there are problems. Every poor developing country has the same problems. Of people being cheated due mainly to illiteracy and poverty. The Middle Kingdom apparently gets more attention. India on the otherhand has 25% poverty and almost 40% illitercy. Is this not a gross violation of human rights?

The Dalai Lama was already part of the Automonus government of Tibet but external forces unfortunately mis lead him to rebel against the Middle Kingdom. He had a chance but made a wrong choice. The rebellion failed due to lack of support. After all, why would slaves and serfs want to support their former owners which also includes the Dalai Lama. Thousands were freed by the liberation. Lack of progress breeds hatred and resentments and that leads to violence and that prevent development and that in turn bred more hatred, resentment and you have a spiral. Another recent example are the Muslims separatists in the southern Thailand which I fear is also beyond control and the violence may spread.

Like the Achehs in Indonesia, the Tamils in Sri Lanka, the Mindanao Muslim in Philippines the Chehneys in Russia, Kosovo, the Kurdist in Turkey, in Africa, at least 2 groups in India and the lists goes on and on. There are many examples and Iraq is just one. Lesson learn is this. Washington consensus is a one system fit all. Western activist and Japanese don't assume China is weak! You can't do what you like as in the past what your great grandparent did. There is totally no basis for supporting Tibet Independent. This is a plot similar to West involvement in allowing Soviet Union to annex a large part of land from northern China and forcing China to let Outer Mongolia into Independent.
Don't underestimate Chinese determination to protect our homeland, we are not weak anymore!

The US is a hippocrite if we support freeing tibet if tibet is free we should give california, arizonia, NEW MEXICO, and texas back to Mexico, Hawaii back to the original rulers (I'm sure their still around), and Lousinana and most of the area around the missippi to France, the other parts of the U.S. can go to the Native Americans, and what hell why don't we sell ourselves into slavery to the blacks to square us even.

Chinese are smart enough to read Western news everyday, but pathetic exiles cling to their version of "Chinese are completely brainwashed". Tibet was under the rule from Beijing since 1271. There were periods of independence in between, but Qing Dynasty resumed rule again and all countries in the world acknowledged Tibet was part of China between 1710 and 1949. History is undeniable, Tibetan brainwashers.

Tibet has been an independent state until the invasion by Manchurians in the Ching Dynasty. The Mainland Chinese communists have never had any relation with Tibetans until they invaded Tibet after WWII. The imperialism of the Mainland Chinese communists should be banned! Many of you are uneducated, saying how indians should be freed from america. People in Tibet dont have freedom of religion, freedom of movement, or freedom of speech. If you were to have a picture of the dalai lama you would be jailed and tortured. I believe Indians in America are allowed to practice their own religion.

Hi Duscin, Tibet still has political prisoners. Tibetans still flee Tibet. Tibetans have been voicing their protest against PRC authorities in all form and expressing their loyalty to the Dalai Lama and his exile government.

Hi, yazeni, i admit what u said. But i don't think those exiles represent majority in Tibet. Do you know many Tibetan families hang Mao Zedong's picture with Dalai Lama's picture together in their house? I have seen that by myself for many times. That's Tibetan's way to thank Mao because before 1950, Tibet is still a slavey system, it's Mao who save those Tibetan slaves.

Hi duscin, I too was talking about Tibetans inside Tibet. Hanging Mao's photo means nothing. It is even hung large in Tiannanmen square where the 1989 democracy demonstration took place. When Chinese themselves cannot tolerate Mao I challenge you that any Tibetan ever would thank Mao sincerely for what he did to Tibet and Tibetans

Hi, Yazeni. I think Tiananmen's Mao picture's meaning is very different from in Tibetan's home. I still recommend you to read something about Tibet before 1950. About Tiananmen 1989, it's another huge topic which is still influencing China a lot, i think it's wiser for us not to talk about it here.

FYI, my specialization is Pacific Asia with specific focus on Chinese history. So, I know what I am talking about Tibet before 1950 or the Tiananmen massacre of 1989. Yes, the two issues are different but one underlying commonality is a cry for freedom - Tibet from colonization and the Chinese students for democracy. Plz read my earlier comments carefully so that I dont need to repeat here what I mean. And yes, I would welcome any recommendations for books
