Not this time. This time, Cady would have gone to prison for life, for killing Sam's friend and trying to kill them on the boat. But then again, in that kind of weather, taking Cady into custody WAS a bit tricky.
There is no such thing as "Legal right to kill". Killing is legal only for politicians, and Sam was just a lawyer. Sam had no morals or scruples in this version. He should have gone to prison as well for his crimes. This last scene was self-defence, true, but the others were not.
Ever heard of Self Defense? After hearing all of the stuff that Cady did to Sam, what jury could convict him? Besides, Sam didn't actually kill him. So, he's not guilty of that. He might be guilty of an assault charge. But Cady would have to be alive for the charge to stick. Politicians? What are you talking about? Protecting your family means that you have no morals? Caring for your friend after she has been raped means that you have no scruples?

No, I don't think that's the point of the story. Sam is flawed, yes, but he's nowhere near as horrible a person as Cady is. Sam is morally ambiguous, Cady is a rapist and a murderer. There's no question who is the worst of the two.
But Cady never took an oath to be morally true and forthright,Sam did and he violated it, he was guilty of selling his client out and being is judge and jury. The 9th Circle Of Hell is reserved for traitors and sadly that's where he was headed. Hopefully this incident caused his character to change and become redeemed. There's no possible to way to tell if a guy like Sam would go to Hell.

Yeah the character is charming and funny which contrasts with his brutality and hatred. Without the humor element the film would have been totally depressing and dark IMO. De Niro is a genius.

This is why DeNiro is my Favorite Actor: At the end of this scene, DeNiro starts speaking in tongues. Now that wasn't part of the script, DeNiro ad libbed that! And it worked beautifully!

No, I don't think that's the point of the story. Sam is flawed, yes, but he's nowhere near as horrible a person as Cady is. Sam is morally ambiguous, Cady is a rapist and a murderer. There's no question who is the worst of the two.

Cady was a scumbag for sure. But he is entitled to as good of a defense as anyone. He paid his debt to society. Sam Bodin did not and had no intention of changing until Max Cady taught him the err of his ways. Hell is full of lawyers anyway.

You do realize that Cady fired Sam as a lawyer and then became his own lawyer? So, he did take an oath. Besides, Sam is going to be punished by no longer being a lawyer. That's a fitting punishment. Dante wrote a book. He's not the authority on Heaven or Hell. If you want him to go to Hell, pray to God for that. Otherwise, enjoy the movie and let it go. There's no possible to way to tell if a guy like Sam would go to Hell.

LOL, no actually there's a method to it...a....liturgical routine to it, if you will.
Draw whatever conclusion you want from that, but there are a couple phrases that get spoken a lot with that crowd, supposedly "improvisational", too. I grew up in that scene, so I got to hear it every sunday and wednesday night.
Duvall in "The Prophet" damn near nails it.

all he is doing is talking really fast and incomprehensiby. you can hear him repeat glory to god ect. speaking in tounges is a language not of this world, a spiritual gift.
however.. cady is extremley deluded, he seems to think he is a good christian. but i think he will have got a shock when he woke up in hell.
cady only THINKS he was speaking in tounges so maybe deniro's representation of it was not so bad after al.

Yeah the character is charming and funny which contrasts with his brutality and hatred. Without the humor element the film would have been totally depressing and dark IMO. De Niro is a genius.

Yeah, I guess from that persepctive I see your point. That's one of the thing's which makes the character so chilling. There is an almost likeable side. BUT I didn't find myself laughing- just kind of creeped out.
