Two thoughts. First, this scene was GREAT even though it didn't have all the humor we would normally expect. Second, is it just me or do you almost feel the excitement level begin to rise when you see Dawn come back into the room?
Instead of Brent ending up with a "dog" the lady is beautiful, and wants to see him again. One would have expected the opposite but again, brilliantly written by Gervais.
had to search for the song that was playing near the ending, i love this ending, the song just brings bak memories on my mp3 now which is gr8, but ye gr8 song... oh and love the way david (ricky gervais) says nothing after the kiss goodbye to his attraction
after feeling so sorry for him for two series he finally is appreciated for being the genuinely nice guy he is :) like it how the guys are finally laughing at his comments when taking the picture...
10 of the most brilliant minutes in television. Such incredible and powerful character development... all set to 80s music ambiance (which works so well). I've watched the scene with Brent finally standing up to Finch so many times and I still choke up. So thankful for this.
The sad thing about this is, this really does accurately reflect exactly what life is like, in so many ways, we all know people from the Office we can identify with.
What I mean is, for example, soooo many nice girls end up choosing the same type of f**king douchebag that Dawn chooses in this series, we all know the type, just lazy, immature, rather dumb, brash cretins who treat the girl like shit...and the girl goes out with him, while plenty of nice guys like Tim go unnoticed.
@CelticReject Yer, but, as beautifully realistic as this series is, the ending (which I wouldn't change for anything btw, brilliant stuff!) had a small touch of hollywood-esque happy-ending feel to it, perhaps not often seen in real life. It can occasionally happen, but most often the nice girl will continue to persist with the complete douchebag, moaning about how he mistreats her etc.
Who cares which one is better? we should be happy that there are genius people out there that make great shows like this and the US Version. And don't Ricky co- produce the Us one anyway? so you guys are stupid as hell for saying the US is dumb cuz they same person wrote 4 both! so can you guys please STOP with all that the UK is better or the US is better cause you guys sound like little fucking children! They're both great btw lolz
The reality is that the British version IS the Office, simple as that. The American version is merely a remake, and always will be merely a remake. There's no argument. Just cold hard facts. So just sit back and enjoy the masterclass...
@mercodurko Im a fan of both versions but i look at it like two very different shows. The first series of the US version is dire because it tries to be the british one. They understand after that they cant match it so they make it a different sort of show. The original is pure Gervais/Merchant perfection, the US version is a funny comedy show, much like 30 rock or two and a half men.
@yearomeocrazy well done for putting a "u" in your humor, and going all the way by calling us wankers, instead of the standard American put-downs, like "douches", "fucktards" , "bitches", and the rest. You must be the most worldy person in terms of foreign culture ,on your whole block. I salute you !
Brilliant how much Ricky Gervais made you care about these characters in such a few number of episodes. I guess my favorite part is when David finally tells Finch to just fuck off. Great way to end this show and yet I'm still somehow hoping fo reunion one day. Probably will never happen but one can dream.
God, this gets me every time. What a perfect ending to a perfect show... Brent got to show graciousness for the first time in the entire series, Dawn and Tim got together at last, and it was just like everything that was out of place was finally put into its rightful place... This show has so much character, heart, and meaning behind it; it isn't just the most brilliant comedy ever written. I'm sorry to say the American version will never touch this.
@ph4455 Thats because your American so you dont understand British humour, British houmour is a lot more subtle you'll probably have to watch it a few more times to get it.
@belstead What's brilliant is that the camera focuses in on her walking out, with Tim in the foreground looking on. So the whole time you're anticipating, hoping she would, but the tension just keeps building up until she disappears from view. Lots of great touches like that. Also thought the romantic tension when David Brent and his date say goodbyes was very cute.
It's just perfect simulation of something so difficult to interpret through acting; Just normal people in an office. And this ending, this catharsis is just brilliant.
@alienhell663 You're so, so right. I'm an actor and absolutely one of the things I find hardest is to accurately portray human behaviour. It's easy to have a shouting match and to cry and throw things, but it's hard to walk across a room. Strange, but true.
man, i felt so heartbroken for tim around 2:40. i totally understand what that's like. wanting so bad to be with her, but just can't take the big risk and lay all the cards on the table before she leaves forever.
knowing ricky and steve's enthusiasm for music they would have thought hard about the song choice at the end and if you listen you can hear the drums kick when dawn walks in and the solo with the kiss perfectly timed. Brilliant!
This show is untouchable in terms of quality and invention. There has never been anything like it and there never will be. The art of this comes from the socially awkward British behaviour; it's so subtle and the Americans cannot replicate that.
I urge everyone to listen to Ricky Gervais' XFM stuff. With the conversations he has with Stephen Merchant, you can see the ideas and the brilliant dialogues come from.
Also David telling Chris to fuck off and Tim/Dawn happened within a minute of each other. All the Hollywood movies I've watched, nothing has managed to replicate one moment let alone two quite like this despite thousands of films writers/directors and actors all having a pop. Magical.
'chris why don't you fuck off' he is a nightmare Brent throughout, however this turnaround is astonishing eclipses TIm/Dawn for me that bit, never fails to give me shivers. The US office is actually really good when you consider Friends/Family Guy and all that OTT comedy shit the yanks do, its exceptional. Not as good as this obviously but caters to an American audience brilliantly. This though is the best programme ever made.
wow I was pissed off when dawn left I thought crap ending never watching this again!......Then of course she came back and It was the best ending ever! when that yaz - only you song comes on! amazing scene!
@PumaOPumaOPumaO ...oh my god, if I had the oppurtunity to watch the office for the first time again I'd sell my soul, DO IT YOU IDIOTTTT...the perfect ending to the perfect show.
And, yes, some of the music and references age this version but the same thing happens in the American version. This is like a story of people at work in the late 90s/early 2000s and people will always be able to relate back to that. In contrast, people will rewatch the American version, laughing about the "Drop it Like it's Hot" and "That's what she said" references. How dumb all our silly little fads are in retrospect. :)
In fact, whenever I get that eagerly hopeless romantic feeling in my heart, I like to watch this ending. I always think back and remember a specific special girl, who watched this with me her first time. I think she also identified the similarities between our relationship and Dawn/Tim. I remember looking over at her when Dawn walks back into the room and they embrace. Tears were running down her cheeks and she had never looked more beautiful. Thinking of you, Katie. Wherever you are right now.
Ah, yes. While I love both the American and BBC version of this show, this particular version holds a special place in my heart. The BBC version contains an element of wit, sensibility and realism that the American version does not. The idea with this version was to make it more like a long film than a sitcom. I appreciate that. I've always connected with the classical love story of Tim and Dawn. I think that's the best aspect of this version--it's very easy for all of us to relate to.
Recently watched all of the episodes of The Office all over again, I've lost count how many times I've watched them all now, but never the less; I'm a full grown man and the ending always makes me well up with tears and smile as Dawn & Tim walk off together.
Maybe the most complete and definitely the most optimistic realization of human nature ever seen in television. And most important of all - so very exciting - even for the thousand time.
If I can be the least bit of David in real life ...taking toughest blows with such philosophy and still be able to make it so damn funny it will be a feat in itself...
And the way Tim watches her leave with Lee, essentially saying, "Look back, just look back once and I'll know," and then she doesn't, and he knows it's truly over for good...
I love 1:20 to 3:02 - both the actors are superb. These hundred odd seconds of TV perfectly captured the heart of this show, whose genius was the ability to absolutely nail situations and characters which we are all familiar with, and make us squirm by holding them up to the light, Perfect end to a perfect show.
Its Yazoo "Only you".Bit of an 80's cheesy classic but fits really well. The Tim and Dawn story is great because most people have fancied someone at work they can't get with!Sob.Sob.
6:47 to 7:09, most touching moment in the whole thing, the sheer joy in his voice when she asks him to call and he says "definitely", then the huge grin on the face. Genius.
I love this show....one of the best ever....I've yet to sit down and watch an episode of the US version, one day when I have a 'dvd day' I might, as I'm sure that version will be funny in it's own right as well....btw, I'm a male that is 35y/o and I cried a little around about 8:30 when Dawn came back for Tim....and of course smiled when David smiled at Tim and Dawn leaving....
I absolutely love this :) I can't believe how long it took me start watching it :) I prefer this version but I think that's only because I'm from Britain and I've grown up around subtle humour. I think that's why most Americans will prefer the US version, because each version is tailored to suit each nations sense of humour.
This show is genius and I am an American. US version is more smack you in the side of the head funny. This is subtle and wonderful. It is not even like a sitcom series, it is more like a movie broken up into many parts. Probably the best series ending I have ever seen too. It helps I spent a year in UK so I get the cultural references.
Absolutely brilliant. Some of the best TV writing and acting of all time, right there. Martin Freeman is brilliant. I was so happy when Tim and Dawn finally got together. The 'um she said no by the way' scene in season 2 was just gutting, so I am glad they finally got a happy ending. Office romances rarely have happy endings, so it was lovely to see. Also David finally standing up to those jerks was a great TV moment. Perfect ending
lol yeh ur rite m8, every british citizen has bad teeth - jus like all priests r paedos i suppose? & u say our humour's lowest common denominator? u mite want 2hav a little rewind back 2the 1st series of the office & take sum advice from brent 'milligan, everett, cleese' - ye ur rite they're all crap writers & comedians! u do remind me of brent in a couple of ways tho - u take stereotypes seriously & believe that havin a half decent vocabulary will sugar-coat bullshit! "let off sum steam bretto"
@aaronbrown44 I guess you missed the 'HEY-YO!' Why so serious champ? I'm trying to find a common ground and for some reason it's making you very very angry. Just because England hasn't discovered the wonders of orthodontia yet, there's no reason to take it out on someone who's clearly your better. HI-YO! C'mon man. This is way more fun when you're not taking everything so seriously. I know that most limeys are a little light in the loafers, but there's no need to be so dramatic. ZING!
@aaronbrown44 Sorry. Homophobic, and I hate that. In terms of country, we, all of us, SUCK. Mine's full of hillbilly's and religiously fanatical retards. Yours is full of gay men and bad teeth. (Hey man, at least what I'm saying about you is a joke. This place is scary right now.) Smile and enjoy the good stuff, like The Office.

This whole clip is the greatest eleven minutes in television history.

the car scene makes me an emotional mess every time. this final 10 minutes is beyond brilliant.

I love how brent made everyone laugh at the end =]

I wish I could be happy for Tim but unfortunately I too am in love with Dawn, lol.
I saw her (Lucy Davis) on the Warner Bros lot and just walked right by. I Figured it wasn't gonna get any better than that.

what a great moments, and david definitely make a difference in life lol

Its Yazoo "Only you".Bit of an 80's cheesy classic but fits really well. The Tim and Dawn story is great because most people have fancied someone at work they can't get with!Sob.Sob.

6:47 to 7:09, most touching moment in the whole thing, the sheer joy in his voice when she asks him to call and he says "definitely", then the huge grin on the face. Genius.

anyone know the name of the song playing when dawn and tim kiss?

Dawn is a bad actor
laywa84 1 year ago
@laywa84 She plays the part of a shy/timid receptionist rather well IMO.
Churchy2188 1 year ago
@laywa84 That's because she's an actress.
Jonathan6561 1 year ago
@laywa84 Dawn is just a character. Not the actress. The actress is Lucy Davis.
And I think she plays the character rather well.
But its a matter of opinion I suppose.

Why I still don't have this show on DVD I don't know.
Bought An Idiot Abroad last week, think I know what my next purchase will be. :)

This show ended exactly when it should have, and that's exactly what makes it so memorable.

Just a great end to a great show. I'm so glad they didn't keep the series going until it lost its steam like so many other great shows do.
I love how David asks Neil to get out the photo at the end so it's just the originals then keeps the other Swindon lot in.

hey wardoj69- Americano here...ours is funny...but the BBC version is far superior! Love it! Wish they had made more.

TheAdam159 1 year ago 13
I really can't see anything on television ever topping this show. That line between hilarity and sentiment has never been maneuvered so perfectly.
By the way...even though it's not close to the original, the American Office is pretty damn good too. In it's own way.

Every so often tv will create something as profoudn as this. Unreal.

lol yeh ur rite m8, every british citizen has bad teeth - jus like all priests r paedos i suppose?

ZING!
bretto0 1 year ago
@aaronbrown44 Sorry. Homophobic, and I hate that. In terms of country, we, all of us, SUCK. Mine's full of hillbilly's and religiously fanatical retards. Yours is full of gay men and bad teeth. (Hey man, at least what I'm saying about you is a joke. This place is scary right now.) Smile and enjoy the good stuff, like The Office.
