@Judyiack STOVL - Short Take Off Vertical Landing. It cannot take off vertically, only land vertically. The jet is too heavy when full of fuel and weapons.
Assuming that NAVAIR and Lockheed Martin can solve the problem of building one STOVL model sturdy enough for carrier ops, an F/A-35 in the groove could trap at landing speeds typical of Northrop Grumman's E-2 and C-2 turboprops and require minimal boost from the catapults when launching at maximum load, operating from a CVAN 68-class ship.
@cal45deserteagle I guess they could use an osprey as an air fuller maybe have them able to be modified with roll in tanks to switch from fuller to transport. , launch them with 1/4 fuel fully loaded and fuel up in flight.
Good to see some real damn progress with this program, though I'm beginning to wish that the A and C versions were scrapped for much better dedicated units, like the F-22 and whatever true 5th gen aircraft are on the drawing board for the Navy.
@ElementoVolatile I agree to a certain degree. It's good to see the USMC finally get it's supersonic Harrier replacement, but I do think the three services would've been better served getting their own specific programs for aircraft designed to their individual needs, as opposed to a single major design that really compromises the relative apex of what could be achieved. We need more F-22s for long range anti-air defense interdiction. F-16s and F-15Es hold down the tactical strike role well.
Dont eat up the negative propaganda. The issues will be worked out. Any large engineering project will run into unforseen problems, and this is the largest project in history.
@hotmn4u 100 of the A model are on order for the RAAF. Two amphibious assault carriers under construction for the RAN are due to arrive next year, and a purchase of the B has been discussed. In any case the USMC's B models will operate from the Aussie LHDs when they enter service . Guaranteed.
Sitting here listening to Deadmau5 "Ghosts N Stuff". I feel like Im Nicolas Cage off of Lord of War. Im not like that. Im a "PEACEFUL" kind of person. I like to HELP people. But the way I see fit, Im all for peace. Its really easy actually. I need to see graphs and charts on stuff first. Not hard to do actually! :D
F35 was multi role fighter too. Saved money. The production of something like this probably saved money too. Really quick change to a jet like this that is lower in stats compared to F22. But how well do we know our enemy? If you been in the military or army. You will always know, the ARMY or military is always changing. Kinda like a reform but not really, like the MARIAN REFORMS of Rome.
Im waiting for this "REFORM" if it happens. Or "CHANGE"... Obama even speaked of it.
Im glad to see the F35 on decks now. So it works? Thats all I cared about.
Alot of you are curious why the stopped making F22s and so on? Lot of people lost their job in factories that made jets (F22s and F15s)? Then out of no where military took a quick leap to F35 that was VTOL design! I know... too soon for a jet like that? Alot of people had it right about budget.
If you were part of the "ROUND TABLE" and looking at charts and graphs and progress over time! I would of done the same.
Does the Naval variant have a different forward vertical turbofan outer door than the Air Force variant? The other videos I've seen shows a butterfly door arrangement (like the hood of a Ford Model A) versus the large, single folding hatch shown here.
@divisioneight There are three variants, and only the Marine Corps version has the vertical lift fan. The Air Force (A model) and Navy (C model) variants are conventional take off only, though the Navy version is aircraft carrier capable. The difference in door arrangement is probably due to the one above being a production aircraft vs a prototype.
@divisioneight The Air Force variant doesn't have the lift fan or that door.
The butterfly door arrangement was on earlier versions of the F-35B (Marines) model, but was replaced with the large single door for better efficiency and thrust.
@xero993 : Many, many thanks for the informative facts you and others gave me concerning this fascinating next generation of the venerable "Harrier". Go Navy!
@xero993 Only one aircraft ever had the butterfly doors, that was the X-35B concept demonstrator. F-35 is a completely different airframe and had the single door from the outset.
So this is really happening. I was so sure this project would get canceled. I mean they cant possible cancel it this far into its testing and development?
@1Nekit1 hahaha who told you that ? the average cost to operate/fly the f-16 an hour is around 30k , the f-22 is around 50K an hour. this is around 55-70K an hour. these numbers are from the military channel that I do watch all the time.
@nakazatoGTR YouTube doesn't allow me to post website addresses, but there's a page on Flight Global named "F-35 programme investigates $442 billion operations bill" which mentions it.
As for when it reaches 80-100 units - it doesn't mention about later, but I think the $30,700 is meant to be the price for production aircraft. Hopefully it'll go down when more F-35 aircraft are made.
I haven't seen any video of the STOVL taking off vertically and going directly to forward flight. Is the jet able to do that yet?

@Judyiack yes the f-35b is STOVL

@mobius1aic i still think that all the F-35s are winged coffins. to remain in the weight limits for takeoff, they removed ECM and Fire extinguishers.
