what kind of cam is the and what are the specs? i just recently bought a 80 trans am with a 403 in it its got dished pistons a wonder cam and the valve train is husky... im also wondering how far did you stroke the engine to make that kind of hp? thnx dan
@lakewannafunk The cam is a comp hydraulic roller cam, 248/254 duration and 600/611 lift. I have a olds 330 crank stroked 3.5 with Chevy rods and custom pistons. Crank was done by J&S Machine.
@gothicpug16 I can tell from reading your response, you don’t know what you talking about. You sound like you are 12 “Freakin douche” lol… what did you read this of a jegs catalog… no one cares about a radiator or a starter and the two edelbrock carbs is a cheap way out. You going to need more than that 5 speed to beat my 6 speed. I hope them 3000 cfm fans and 40 series flow master muffs give that BBC more power because my SBO is going walk all over that BBC…
What size carb are you using? i have a holley 750 dp that i bought of of ebay and just threw it on. i have changed my oil only once since the rebuild and i seem to have fuel in my oil. its grey and smells like gas. ive been told its too much carb for the engine and is just washing by the rings. what do you think?
@MrNokia455 nothing crazy, it's a stock bottom end w/ a mild isky cam & when dynoed it had 3A heads, 96% outside. it did 249hp 303tq, & 324hp 390tq on a 150 shot of nitrous. i now have 7a heads & performer rpm intake so im guessing it's making 15-20 more now. im hoping to port out the heads & match port the intake this year im hunting down the 10's, its gone 11.43 so far.
@dman071279 On my engine, I am running a total of 32 degrees of timing. I don’t know what the timing is at idle, just at 3,000 rpm for the total timing. If you have the 330 crank, the timing is going to be slightly off, you need to mark TDC somehow and use that mark against your timing. I can’t start my car till I get the new push rods, otherwise I would look at the idle timing. I have change the bushing in my distributer and the springs as well.
@MrNokia455 The 330 crank is different? I thought it was the same as stock but forged steel. I just stuck and old pushrod down cylinder 1 and turned engine by hand until pushrod didn't move up anymore. Then i checked the balancer and it was right on 0.
@dman071279 Ya the 330 has a different bolt pattern and the timing will be slightly off it’s not exact match as the 403 crank on timing. The best way to adjust your timing is to do it on a dyno and then mark it..
@dman071279 are you asking about idle? as far as i know the timing on 403's are high. you should get your distributor curved for your set up, that'd be the best way. my 403 was curved 17% idle 36% full advanced or 18%-37% but i have a mild cam, 270 duration .496 lift 108 LSA. hope that helps
@MrNokia455 turbo 350 w/ a shift kit, crappy tork master convertor & 3.42s. im gonna put a good convertor (2500 stall) soon & maybe put a gridle since the motor will be out. im thinking of going w/ 3.73, but i think it might be too much for the highway
the power is there, i dont see why not. whats your suspension set up like? suspension goes a long way!!! i have a 1.53 60' on 275 MT drag radials
@pooper90031 stock suspension for now with drag bars and 26 inch tall street tires. Can’t really go to track till I get a few more things fixed.. but I will run it down the track with the street tires once I have the tranny fixed. Check out this guys website for someone trying to put too much power to the motor without putting a girdle on it. jsmachineoldsmobile dot come, check out 403 carnage, I am using this guys full girdle with the pain rails as well.
@MrNokia455 damn should be interesting on street tires. when you get a chance a i recommend calvert racing split mono leaf springs, worked great on my car... i believe it was jim from j&s has warned me a couple times on oldspower. its a mixture of too much power & over revving it. i shift arnd 5200 rpm so i don't stress my motor too much. i'm not too worried abt it. i've had this set up for 7 years now. only problem i've had is two blown head gaskets.
@pooper90031 I currently have a 6,000 rpm rev limiter, but plan on shifting about 6,300. I don’t think I am going to get much traction on street tires, but we will see.. first things first.
@pooper90031 made 540 ft lbs of torque, before I can go to the track, I need to fix the T56 I have in it (first and second gear), and two weekends ago I broke some push rods. Waiting for the new ones to come in.
We must have both talked to same same guy at comp cam (Brian Pitcher) because we have the same cam. My specs are the very same except I have less lift. What intake are you using? RPM?
That sound is just so so sweet. Its just an awesome motor as long as you dont spin em to the moon. I just finished building my first engine which happens to be a 403 as well. Mine hasnt been on a dyno yet but Im estimating a little over 500. If you dont mind check out my video and tell me what you think. Keep in mind that I havnt had a timing light on her yet and the carb jetting is completely off. Its just something I had on the shelf.
Man this is a super sweet sounding T/A. Never thought an Olds could sound as healthy as this! I have an 83 Hurst Olds and I am about to replace the tired 307 with a mildly built 403 that I picked up a couple months ago. I know nothing about the cam, but it is a mild cam, has an aluminum intake and 4a heads. What all did you do to the heads and what stall converter are you using? What CFM carb are you running?
@Bored030overMD I am running a fully ported Edelbrock aluminum heads, with a competition valve job and comp cam springs with a set of 1.6 scorpion roller rockers. No stall converter, running a T56 manual out of a 93 camaro.
I have a 79 with a 403, as well.. how much did this build up run you?
