Hall got his whole sound & style from Rundgren. Hall began as one of Todd's backup vocalists and then backup act. Just check out Todd's live "Back To The Bars" album and you'll see Hall & Oats along with Stevie Nicks as backup vocalists. The bass player here (behind Hall) is also from Todd's Utopia. Of course Todd got all the Phily Soul stuff from all the great Phily black singers & songwriters of the day as this sound is really a black invention.

Hall was influenced by Philly soul. He started out working as a session musician with the Delphonics and the Stylistics. Todd's "Back to the Bars" album was in 1978, 9 years after H&O came together, so I don't see how you came to the conclusion that he started out as one of his backup vocalists. Let's just listen to the music and not get into black and white or any of that bs.
