Everything young people do is a waste of time... unless we have them all working in factories :-) That's the joy of youth, to waste time. Cosplay is as valid a hobby as any other, a lot of these people even research and create their own outfits. I would challenge anyone... what do you have in your life that you are truly passionate about? Most of us have nothing... cosplayers, gunpla builders, anime otaku, even if most people don't understand the motivation, we can all understand the passion.
