Chrissie knows exactly how to harness male power and aggression on that stage whilst still being in total control of proceedings..something she was equally able to do offstage too..at least from what I can see. I Love that girl.
Maybe because at the time this song came out, the music industry was plugging women like Joan Jett and Pat Benetar as being these allegedly tough punk rock girls. This song alone is proof that musically she kicks both their asses. The only woman who rocked harder than Chrissie Hynde was Wendy O. Williams.
In Creem magazine, in the late-'70s/early-'80s, Chrissie referred to herself as "an old dog." She SO NOT A DOG. And she was FAR from old back then. Back then, her trademark was carrying a hairbrush about with her.
I just idolized her to no end. No old. No dog. Just a hairbrush.
THANK YOU for posting this! I have seen them live since the first album back in August 1979 or 80 at the Motor City Roller Rink here in Detroit. THIS clip is the Pretenders I LOVE.
That's James Honeyman Scott on guitar, Pete Farndon on bass.
right...there was maybe 200 people there, the stage was about four feet off the floor. There were a couple of people in front of me with very British accents saying "can you believe they have to play here"...the show was amazing, but later shows were much better.
This is the first time I've heard this song since first hearing it at the West Point concert. She had the best intro to a song I've ever seen. She borrowed a cadet's hat to wear on stage. She started talking about how much she liked her new hat--implying she was going to keep it. Then alluding to the problem he would have returning to the barracks without it, she said something like: so I guess I should give it back to you because... bad boys get spanked...(launches into the song).
SHIT ON THAT! Who else besides Chrissie could have gotten away with that line, in a relatively mainstream band, besides Chrissie? Because she knew how to dominate everyone who was an asshole. My hero.
Chrissie was the first woman who could get away with saying things like 'Shit on that!' without controversy. She was every teenage girl's heroine ! Saw her at Lilith Fair a few years ago, though...not the same band (obviously) or style at all. Bring back Pete and James!
@jahtez Agreed- I can't think of one other female in Rock who can put it all together like Chrissie does!

She's amazing. Been in love with Chrissie since 1979. Saw her outside of Boston in 86. Incredible voice. Wish they were touring.

Was Schmegma a Portland band? Back when I was playing, I seem to recall a band by that name, but not spelled this way (that I reall, anyways).

This song is ridiculous. What's the context of this "bad boys get spanked" line? She herself looks kinda lezzie.

Yes, she's a twice-married Mum with at least 2 kids. She's the most dangerous kind of LEZZIE: The LEZZIE that doesn't go for girls.

Watching this vid is bittersweet for me now knowing that within 2 years, half of the band would be dead from heroin.

Yeah; It was always odd to see the "New" band do the "Old band"'s songs.
But today!
Jezzzzzus!
They rock almost harder if not as hard as the original band!
berettadreams 3 years ago
no pete and james were part of this album.

That's not what he said. 2 years after this performance Pete and Jimmy didn't die. They were dead before this performance.

I heard the B52's played Motor City, too. Where was it? Somewhere at 9 Mile and Van Dyke, yes?
