Good job in the rescue. Yeah, I'm sure you'll get grief from some for not being properly prepared, but you guys dodged one and got a cheap lesson. I've been searching out tree well disasters and almost everyone of those has the victim in the well headfirst and even if there are people on the scene immediately, the DEAD;ome is about 4 minutes.
You are so very lucky to be alive. You have great friends who did the right thing by digging for your face that is the ultimate priority. Looks like you were really hurt judging by coughing up blood. Always keep your buddies in sight and single file.

Eerily one winter I stumbled unto a girl because i was riding thru the trees and when i stopped for a second i heard screaming, i bolted towards the voice and found a girl by herself down a 15 foot tree well buried to her stomach, she was in full panic mode at that point, and burst into tears when i showed up.
If this really was the back country (and not inbounds), he and his buddies are idiots for not carrying beacons, probes and shovels. He would have been dug out A LOT faster with a shovel than with hands.
