The batteries will have to be replaced every few years so it's one hell of an expensive car to keep. That's a problem that they BMW will never tell you. Those batteries will most likely end up costing you the owner a few thousand US every time you have to replace them. So for it to be "efficient" in the monetary you would have to have driven the car for like twenty years.

@davidparkowski I don't think they've released a price for this car yet but I'm guessing it's going to be in the 6-7 digit range. When someone spends that kind of money on a car, they don't really care about fuel cost or maintenance fees. I think BMW made this to open some new options in the "eco-friendly" hybrids you see on the roads today. Getting only 50 miles on an electric battery and paying more on your electric bill rather at the pump isn't innovative IMO. I actually like BMWs approach.

there are a few problems with this car:

1) the shapes nice, but the fins and all don't instill much confidence in the durability of the body, especially the winged tail lights.

2) the way the door opens will make this a nightmare to get out of in a multistory car park, especially in a big city

3) the 100% transparent door doesn't provide much privacy

4) because of the transperent roof there will be nowhere to hide from the glare of the sun

5) its only a 2+2, not a five seater

this (i8) a sportscar. theres also a normal city car (bmw i3) in that design.

carbon might be light, but its very strong. hypersportscars made completly out of carbon fibre are in generell very safe, safer than cars made from steel.

and dont forget its a concept car. those cncepts always look very futuristic. im sure the standard version wont have trasnparent doors/roof or those doors (but id liek to have them).

@Soldier957 because diesel for starters does not need to go through as heavy a refining process as normal gasoline and diesel engines are far more efficient than standard gasoline engines and produce less greenhouse gas emissions. As for the plastics part, for all we know its made from recycled plastics or from synthetic plastics that don't start as oil
