Hostel was awful in many ways (not because of the gore) but because of the screenplay, his lackluster directing, and his choice of actors. I should know because I've directed a few amateur movies with little direction and most of the actors could portray their characters just as well as the ones in Eli's films. Also you don't need to be a director know that a movie is sh*t, it is up to the audience to decide because they paid for the ticket and have a right to express their opinions
I couldn't agree more. The screenplay was too rudimentary and half-assed. The amount of gratuitous violence wasn't the problem, it was (as you said before) uninspired direction.
