Yep. I put the stock mufflers back on a couple months ago. It sounded nice, the drone was getting to me. I've heard of pulling the two pipes apart where they go down the center of the car and welding a piece to keep them a bit further apart on M3's. I bought some Flowmaster mufflers which made it less raw and partially quieter but took them off too.
Have to figure out if I will put just the tips back on with straight pipes, the flowmasters or perhaps another muffler and the tips.
Not exactly true. Nearly all of the aftermarket exhausts DO NOT increas HP. In fact, many actually break even or loose. Especially on such high strung motors. This may be different on a turbo car where boost is turned up etc. But many of the cars I've put SS or some other brand exhaust I didn't gain at all.
It does sound pretty good, but you have just about a 0hp increase over the stock exhaust system. Supersprint, Eissenmann, Corsa, and all the other respectable aftermarket exhaust companies will get you 10+whp with new midpipes and muffler sections. If you were just going for sound, the good job, you saved a lot of money and created a great sound, if you were going for power and sound, you got pretty much no power out of that. I like the sound, though :)
Cost was around $300. The tips alone were the most expensive part as they are dual outlet double wall and look like they came off a Ferrari 456 or 575. All you do is remove the mufflers but keep the flanges. Then fix straight pipes in their place with some nice tips.
