OK, it's a nice technique... don't you also like that moment when he walks away at the end, his final step completes the technique but he's already on his way elsewhere...I recall that image in the book: 'Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere'. But, the line drawing superimposed could be better. Somehow they don't capture the subtlety of the move. It was as if something unitary and smooth were made up of a series of gross fragments.. No. It can't be that. It's subtler..
Without wishing to sound loud,Doran Shihan is a wonderful teacher and has beautiful movement. This is a man who started Aiki in 1962...his life has been aiki. When somebody can show this much skill and enthusiasm after 47years something,I'll take my hat off to them.Thank you
MUCH of Aikido looks very silly when you look at it in a vacuum. Realize is that it teaches you to be centered & to use your balance and mass better than any other art I have tried (except perhaps Judo). In a stand up fight I would most likely use a TKD technique. But I have never been in a fight I saw coming. I avoid them like death. I HAVE been grabbed (in bars & by confused patients) on more than one occasion, and Aikido provided me OUTSTANDING techniques to discourage such behaviour.
If your concept of martial arts is getting into fights & beating people up (look up v=nU3BXM1Fulc ), then Aikido is not right for you & perhaps you should examine your own motives. If your goal is to AVOID fights, and quickly end situations where you are grabbed or cornered by some clueless meathead who thinks "he doesn't want to fight so he must be a wuss," then Aikido is excellent. Especially when combined with something like wrestling or jiujitsu.
An amusing anecdote. I am often a designated driver, so I am at various events cold sober surrounded by drunks. One evening some meathead had decided that I was eyeing his girl & came over to intimidate me.
At first I simply avoided him, but he was persistant and kept poking me in the chest (which is a remarkably annoying thing to do).
Finally I had enough & told the drooling idiot that I appreciated his feelings, but I could assure him I had no interest in "hosebeast."
Predictably, he took a swing & gave me a brilliant opportunity to demonstrate my favorite technique: "Munetsuki Kotegaeshi."
The next thing he knew he was face down on the floor with his arm locked. I told him, "I am going to let you go now. But you are warned. If you touch me again, I am going to hurt you."
On his feet, he watched me, spooked, and kept his distance. My med school classmates found it quite hilarious & I started teaching the girls in the class self defense techniques.
If you go on my channel you will see that I don't do Aikido, it is interesting that some of the detractors of Aikido lack the Gray matter to presuppose that Aikido-ka don't look at other things.
And it is also foolish not to look at Aikido! I do what I think is practical Martial Arts.
This week I enrolled my 11 year old son in Aikido as his first step on the Martial path Because after 33years I know I am right to do this whatever others think!
I did Iwama Aikido 4.5 years, now I switched to Judo/MT, night and day difference. I promise you Aikido will look like sloppy Judo when there isn't a compliant uke running around. Not because Aikido is inferior, but because it doesn't apply realistic resistance during practice.
I am interested to know how have you tested the practicality of your (Tenshin Dojo?) aikido. Have you tested it on the streets, competition, UFC, whatnot? Or just in your dojo with your friends at your dojo and then you feel you can criticize something as vast as aikido. Have you been to any of the dozends of CAA or ASU seminars Droan teaches all across the US? You can begin to test your assumptions there.
Don't expect more of this guy. Ego-otoshi. The founder of his dojos once offered 1 of O'Sensei's uchi-deshi, one of the most outstanding Aikido shihan in the world, an "opportunity" to become part of his new organization in America. The shihan smiled and had a senior student courteously escort him to the door.
um.. bringing up another style and how they train in it..(the example of trainning you used was UFC, and sparring competition)
is very patetic to say if you take martial arts. The problem I see with your comment is that you believe all martial arts are a trainning for the same circumstances.. which is not true. aikido is for aggresive (and an
unprovoked and unready to attack) fighting.
things like UFC and the styles of competiton train for a fight that the attacker and you acknowledge.
Yawn! Another one who thinks his is the real or effective Aikido. Like it or not, it doesn't matter what style of Aikido, it''s all the same in the end. Have used it in street situations unfortunately and I'm still here. So, I imagine that my senseis have taught me good Aikido. Your lack of knowledge is too obvious. Twain said it best - better to remain silent & be thought a fool, than to speak & confirm everyone's suspicions.
Same concepts? Yes. Same? Hardly? Sounds like you are a Utilitarian. There are naturally more effective ways to get things done, even though sometimes you reach the same result the way you go about them is still important. Regardless there are certain ways to do techniques that can improve the odds of success and Doran Sensei's techniques are foolish. If you train for a real fight then you are guaranteed you will be ready if you are unfortunate enough to get into one.
Have developed bit Utilit. approach, but also much deeper understanding. Also trained 40 of my 61 yrs. Ran dojo 4 many years. Doran might seem 2 elegant, but still moves into shikaku & twiddle thumbs once there. 2 b good @ Aikido need 2 add every body mvment u can. U have 50 & I have 100 - I've 2x options 4 spontaneous mvment. But ur vast experience & training u know better.
I don't think you know what you're talking about - the videos are for demonstration purposes. If you kill your practice partner every time you practice, you won't have any partners left to practice with. You know that this is quite a mature man who has lived aikido for a majority of his life. He moves with grace - in person, he is both grandfatherly and could rock your world at the same time - that is the sign of a true martial artist - not some thug who has something to prove.

For chest-thumping? Not so good.

ultimatehammer - "If, however, you are cornered by a non-clueless meathead..."
That is what the 40 caliber is for...
Seriously. I have never been in a situation I couldn't escape or handle. I am not a particularly big guy, but very fit & solid (swim, bike, run).
In my few experiences in non-voluntary combat, I have come out on top each and every time.
