  • There goes his job

  • Yep, perfect time for a lunch break.

  • They could always ask the NZ Govt for another A4. They still have a number in flying condition

  • @horse294 You think they should take a lovely, flying condition A-4 Skyhawk and pop it up on a pillar somewhere as a display instead, sitting out in the weather 365 days a year? Sorry I can't agree with that. I'd find one somewhere that was already grounded, at least, preferably in hopeless condition, and use that instead. For all the good one does up on a pillar like that, it might as well be a fiberglass mockup instead of a real plane.

  • Realy small crane and bad spot for wire .

  • I think I will start a crane service!!!

  • Thats coming out the paycheck, you break it you buy it, lol.

  • @xxzxxphoenixxzxx and the grass too...

  • Dang, I guess the A4 will have to be restored again!

Makes me think of a Thomas the Tank Engine episode where Gordon has a major crash shortly after coming back from the works!

  • Is it strange that I only feel sorry for the crane?

  • @captainkmanOFP857 Yes, quite strange, actually. (I was mostly worried about that poor pillar, myself).

  • Does Gieco insure de-commissioned aircraft?

  • I am happy to report that the A-4 Skyhawk that was so badly damaged is now fixed and on display back at the Main Gate at xNAS Alameda (Alameda Point) ...as of the 20 Dec 2011 just in time for the final tribute to the "Centennial Of Naval Aviation".

To all you armchair operators out there...this was a bad day but it was not UN-repairable ...2 months and 26 days from start to finish... that was with people who knew what they were doing!

  • @TIMSTQY Not saying that it's easy, but repairing an aircraft to a condition that looks good enough as a piece of decoration is not like repairing one to put back in the air. I'm guessing some people get the two mixed up. Still, doing it in a bit less than 3 months is quite a feat! Do you know where I might read more about the operation and how it was done, perchance?

  • @justforever96 I am well aware of airworthiness limitations...I am a certified aircraft mechanic/inspector/quality auditor.

What I am saying is that all repairs done were to "airworthy standards" not that it is an airworthy airframe or will ever be again...it was retired in 1969 for "high time"

I do know that it will now be up on display for another 40+ years because of the work that was done.(complete corrosion control)

About where you would get more info on it... ask me I did it

  • @TIMSTQY Sorry, I wasn't presuming to educate you on airworthiness requirements. I'm not sure what my point was, actually. Anyway, I was just asking because I'd be curious to see a step by step of how they did it. I find restoring old airplanes fascinating, like artwork sometimes (MAAM's P-61 was quite incredible, but that started as a WWII era wreck). For starters, how badly was it damaged? And did you use spare parts from another A-4, or make your own pieces, or what?

  • I am happy to report that the A-4 Skyhawk that was so badly damaged is now fixed and on display back at the Main Gate at xNAS Alameda (Alameda Point) ...as of the 20 Dec 2011 just in time for the final tribute to the "Centennial Of Naval Aviation" ...For all you negative people that want to question the human spirit...in your face !....it's done !

  • That'll buff right out

  • In my opinion, the mast is boomed out much too far.

You would be surprised how little could be lifted with the boom out this far.

Yes, he was able to lift it off the truck, but when he was SWINGING (turning) the load,

the dynamics may change very much, I have seen this before.

This lift I believe should never have taken place like that.

You ALWAYS try too get as close to the load as possible, never mind the damn grass.

  • All set u got a check its up

  • RIP Headphone users.

  • How about the bonehead that walks under the Cranes boom just before it falls. Sheeesh

  • The silence afterwards said it all!!

  • c'mon, Maverick and Goose could have just landed that A-4 on top of the pedestal.

  • I think the eagle needs a tear under his eye for that one.

  • As one of the restorer's I was devastated by this, but as the Aircraft stands today...it has been totally restored again and will go back up this year (so much for that year to restore that was mentioned to KRON, tells me the "gentlemen" who said this had no idea what he was talking about) To all you folks that like act like "armchair quarterbacks" this was an unfortunate accident nothing more!

  • you were not there and do not know what was going on...I have to say that the crane folks have made this right and as it turns out this aircraft is actually better off than it would have been if this had not happened...it will probably be fit for display another 50+ years now !

It will be back up by years end and will look just as it is in this "inconsiderate " video ( the person sold it for $175. to the news media) thus making a profit off others misfortune...typical today!

  • @TIMSTQY Thanks Tim, miss you at the ship

  • Fucking terrorist crane drivers

  • god bless america. lol

  • That's what I want to be, a PROFESSIONAL CRANE OPERATOR.

Sure glad he doesn't work as a LOAD MASTER on a cargo plane...

  • A restored plane on a stick, isn't really much of a "restore". Pound out the dents, touch up the paint and it'll be good as...well, a plane on a stick.

  • another millwright doing an operators job?

  • Reminds me of the war effort in Afghanistan and Iraq.

  • @TheCentralServices Yes indeed, both completely fail although some would argue otherwise.

  • @Kareldekorte2 Fail with a ludicrous amount of collateral damage. No wonder, apart from the lack of discipline and forethought they even allow tatoos in the US military now. The same happened in the Roman military right before their downfall.

  • More than likely was a union. To spoiled and lazy to set it up right, and of course never wrong. typical democrat

  • @ironworker1969 - and clearly don't know shit about what just happened. Stick to tying rebar champ.

  • LOL

  • Great camera work!!! This was filmed by a news crew???? Know how to pan out????

  • brains and trains....guess they took the train......

  • long reach+weight=not a good outcome

  • you saved money on that one now did'nt you.. That simple pick would've been done correctly Had Union Ironworkers and a Union Operator been Hired.. What in the bald headed fuck. Look at the center pin to center of the load distance, waaaay overboomed YOU SHOULD'VE BEEN ON THE GRASS ON MATS or gotten a crane with a chart that can handle it out that far (of course thats more money and math both of which your short on)

  • .....That's IT......ALL YOU MOTHERFUCKERS ARE FIRED!!!

  • What a pilot..

  • that happens when u send a rookie on a job!!!

  • A good example of torque, and other stresses.

  • At first I was alarmed about the soft, cushy grass, and the fact that the crane was on grass at all, but it appears that it was sitting on the street before toppling. Am I wrong? Why would you put a crane on grass, anyway when there's a nice, hard street?

  • @ProChoiceJesus the grass area around the pedestal is pretty wide circle which made for a long strech. There was a disagreement between the property management company and the restore team and crane company on which grass area the managment company was suppose to not water that week. They watered this side of the base. But I still think the crane operator has the final say of if and how he's going to do this lift

  • @dwcobb43 he was way to far away.

  • @dwcobb43

So wouldn't it be the Crane Operator's fault then if he had the say and chose not to go on the grass?

No idea on the rules and regulations on Crane operations-I work at a factory and I'm not allowed to even start a forklift-not certified

  • @dwcobb43 There was no disagreement at all ...they just turned off the wrong area...where do you get this information from ....a cracker jack box ?

  • @ProChoiceJesus Actually its the opposite. looks like they didn't want the crane on the grass so they tried to make the pick from the street. The crane didn't have the capacity at that boom angle so it tipped over trying to reach the pedestal. They should have had the crane closer to the pedestal...in otherword on the grass. Dumbest rookie mistake a crane operator can make.

  • That was brutal.

  • I watched this 10 times and still laughed my ass off everytime.

  • well, time to restore it again!

  • Skilled labor is not cheap...cheap labor is not skilled. I guarantee you this was a non union outfit. This is what happens when you get the cheapest company to do the work. Crane did not sound like it failed. Sounded to me like the operator paniced and gassed it too hard when he hit the pedestal. He/She didn't know what they were doing. Most likely not certified...

  • ROFL!!!

  • Everyone's an expert after the fact, but a few things there that are glaringly obvious. Nice cushy grass? goddamn he'd wanna have a nice spreader setup for his outriggers. Why was he lifting a such a reach? Should be as close in as possible without fouling. this was a cowboy job, I'm guessing they came in at absolute bottom dollar.

  • Never mind the entire lift was a disaster from the planning to the end result, why couldn't the camera operator get the crane in the picture instead of zooming in on the A-4?

  • @islandcerts No doubt, and he's so proud of his "production" that he even films himself at the end.

  • the only thing crane operators have to know, is how much the crane can handle at a certain distance, and how much the load weighs. they should be arrested, slapped like a bitch, and charged with stupidity when this shit happens.

  • HAHAHA

  • Can't make out the make of crane from that grainy Photo but this should never have happened with a well planed pick. The boom angle looked pretty darn low to try to get that radius and if they had a LMI they should have seen it approaching the load limit even if they didn't have an accurate weight of the load. We've all pushed the charts and worked cranes to near structural failure points or at least tipping points to get a job done and it's always sketchy if not stupid. Investing time in putti

  • somebody lost there job on this one

  • Cranedrivers fault ,no doubt about that .

  • This should be done to all weapons of war.

  • Calm your tits everyone....that may just buff out.......

  • looks better in that postition anyways hahaha climbing and banking to the right. the crane was tired so it's just takin a nap. NBD

  • un proffesional wankers.

  • lol CAn do lol

  • Hm.... Lowest bidder, just like your weapon, your body armor and your aircraft.

  • so many things wrong with this picture..... so i'll just get to the root '' operator was not properly trainned '' .

  • Nothing that a can of touch up paint won't fix

  • LoL what a bunch of hillbilly dumb@sses

  • Always use the right crane for the lift.

  • Crane operator: "Did'nt U suppose to manage the outriggers, f-ing drunk retard amoeba?! U have destroyed an american peace of proudness, f-ing moron!"

Probationer employee: "I did, mate. U did'nt tell me, though, on which side of the bloody crane, so: Piss off f-ing w-nker!"

Camera guy: "Oh dear, I missed both to zoom out to get the crane during the incompetent lift, AND the following fight…"

  • so much for the restored part... thats really sad. looked great

  • Someone obviously failed their OSHA training.

  • When they fix the plane they should put a decal of a crane under the window and then put a cross through it.

  • what a fucking retard operator!!

  • Silly people those americans !!!!!!

  • @albertyon56

Yeah, because you know, there arent any other stupid people in the rest of the world...

  • Urkel was at the controls "did i do that?"

  • not really thrilled with the camera work. Kept waiting for a wide shot to show what was happening to the crane. Didnt get it.

  • That is unbelievable....I take more care jacking up my car!

Oh well.....I guess they have to re-restore it now.

  • Everything must come down.....

  • $29 or two for $50!!!

  • we have some a4's going cheap down he in New Zealand...

  • it was NRC with a 1976 grace crane, all info on this accident can be found on the internet also with some relly cool stil photos after the accident

  • Crane drivers fault. He should only lift after a thorough inspection of the ground conditions.

  • This sucks!

  • @ GetUpOnIt4100 your right. Ground conditions are one of many varibles that can get you into trouble. Says right in the operators manual firm level ground. Lately I been running a 300 ton hydro first thing down are my mats 5' x 5' and sometimes that ain't enough. I never like to second guess an operator (wouldn't like it done to me).

  • As a NCCCO certified crane operator, The length of the chokers, the boom angle, and the radius he was attempting to set the jet at had nothing to do with it tipping,IF the cranes load chart said it was good for the weight then that isn't why it tipped. In the caption it said the soft ground gave way.

  • I agree as a journeyman ironworker the cranes boom was way tooo low and was toooo far away from the load. The crane should have been close to where they were sitting the jet and the boom should have been sticking wayyyy up. Also have 1 safety line in the front and back of the jet to move it around in place. I did not agree with the way they had it rigged neither. Way to short steel chokers. Also to close together. I wouldnt agree with it. The crane operator knows better. He is at fault.

  • what is that screeching nose

  • I bet the crane driver felt shit afterwards.OH n i guess it wont do the crane companys rep any good either.

  • camera work as bad as the crane work,,,,,did the driver abandon the crane ?..seemed like he had plenty of time to jib back and remedy the situation....lets put this down to inexperience on more than one persons part.....and do not employ this cameraman to do your wedding video....or your relatives may think they see you going down the aisle ........in a coffin...or being dipped in the font.....totally filming the wrong action ...!!!!!

  • what company was this?

  • @dubmatic808 not sure

  • Many things went wrong with the lift, Crane rating too low, crane to far away from load, sounded like mechanical failure of the crane. Also there were some still pictures that show one person looking down not paying attention. Just goes to show you when things go wrong they go wrong fast and you must be ready to act

  • @firegodscott In the Alameda Sun newspaper a couple days later. The property management company that over sees the former base said that there was a "miscommunication" about which gate to stop watering. But if your the crane operator and you see the supports on your crane sink into the ground when you extend them during your setup wouldn't you stop things and reexam the situation to make sure it's safe?

  • What a bunch of dildoes...........

  • This sucks! Heartbreaking!! Someone did not do their homework.....

  • aww thats gay, older brother allen worker on that jet :(

  • point the camera at the god dam crane!

  • Now they can spend 4 years restoring it. It will give them somthing to do :)

  • My God!!!! What a disaster.
