Rutger is the best (along with Wellander) just look at the wonderful lines in Nina ,if it wasn't , soldiers , dancing queen and even on Shine ,sometimes you can't believe your ears that it's not a machine ,he's such precise !
i've wondered if this one was originally on fretless.. but you get the back pickup sounding quite similar, maybe it was fretted after all.... outstanding bass line and transcription and performance!
i learned more about melody+feel from rutger than anything else.i love all music from clasical to metal i can always take something from his melodic lines.any musician who has problems learning their own bass lines listen 2 abba and listen, your bass will come alive, theory can only take you so far,and speed without feel has no meaning.give him a listen, while they sound simple they are very detailed and tricky..class player and such a gift to bass players no matter your style.thanks for the video
I was a teen when ABBA was big here in the 70s (USA). Girls I knew all swooned over them; I could not STAND their music back then. Weird, now I really love old ABBA tunes. Thanks for sharing.
Even though the music of U2 and ABBA seems miles apart, they both have several things in common: originality, lasting power, great songwriting skills and fantastic singers!
Thanks bassowmann, for shining a light on this fantastic track and bassline!
It takes a free mind and hearing to aknowledge that the songs of ABBA were written and played AND SUNG by geniuses! Even Bono (of U2) said that in that time it was very uncool to like ABBA but now aknowledges that Bjorn and Benny were one of the best songwriters ever! And he said that the songs are so strong that they will be remembered forever! And I think he's right.
Wow bassowman... that was fantastic!! I watched/listen to it with chickenskin on my arms and the hairs were standing up in my neck...
I always said to people around me that this song has one of the best basslines ever played: the little twists and twirls of the notes, the notes that are deliberately NOT being played (the ghostnotes), the timing etc... All charactertistics in this structure of this bassline that make it a masterpiece of music in itself.
Oh, sorry, WELL DONE BASSOWMAN!!!! Thank you, you're a fabulous player! I sometimes wonder who in the world could have possibly created better basslines for ABBA songs? Probably nobody. They hired the right guys.
One more underrated Sweedish bass player; Ez Gomer' , from the 80's Christian Metal band Leviticus/Jet Circus. That is one bad mother. Smooth, articulate, amazing.
I never really knew the real importance of the bass before seeing your videos. Well of course a song without bass is missing something, but I thought it were only 'one more' in a song. I'd seen you play Beatles before (Hey Bulldog was the first) but watching this is fantastic. Congratulations!
Importance of bass is such that some highly successful songs rest on very powerful bass lines (Another one bites the dust by Queen, Good Times by Chic and Lessons in Love by Level 42, just to name a few).
As usual it's perfect !! Yyour lasted posts of ABBA songs sound special for me because I fell in love with the bass when I was 14 with the LP Waterloo (My Mama Said, Sitting in The Palmtre....etc)and I think Rutger Gunnarsson is maybe not very wellknown but he is surely one of the great bass player (a very good melodist !). As a swedish you can be proud ;-)
Now you have played my 3 favorites bass players: sir Paul, Rutger Gunnarson & John Deacon
Hey Bassowman - every time I hear Boston's "Peace of Mind," I think, "I would sure like to see Bassowman do that one." It's bassline dances around all over the place!
I think it would be a fun new challenge for you. Or maybe not.
Hi maestro! you make new abba fans in the world ;-) Rutger Gunnarsson worked also with Adam Ant i see in wikipedia... i missed this great bass player and musician. What is he doing now?
I think he is one of the greatest pop bass players around. I believe he has been involved in the Mamma Mia musical and in The Original ABBA Orchestra that has been touring, at least in Sweden. He also does string arrangements and stuff like that.
@bassowman Last July in hyde park at the thank your for the music to celbrate ABBA's music the oringal ABBA band was their inc Rutger Gunnarsson and other ABBA backing Band members.
Brilliant, as usual... One of the things that amazes me from you the most is your ability to nail the tone of the original recordings. This particular bassline is a great composition and you did it justice.
Also, I'm really starting to love this Hagstrom bass.
Great playing. You really captured the feel and pocket of the original.

It was always hard to decipher/figure out how it was played. Millions of credits to you, bassowman, to bring it so wonderfully to the forefront.
And indeed, as somebody else stated here: a great sneer to the ABBA-bashers!

Who would have known that such an innocent pop song would have such an intricate bass line behind it, wow. Nice job breaking it down too.
