  • What software are you using?

  • @thefoxfurry5 wow

  • @thefoxfurry5 I mean like what software are you using?

  • I´ve used this tutorial several times and it really helped me! Finally I can color without having to paint around the line all the time!

  • your voice is annoying

  • Wow, thanks for this tutorial, it's really easy to understand! :)

  • i am having problem i cant get everything selecte i get only one pice selected=( really not much little... why? Ty for help

  • Might I say that you have a lovely voice

  • Thanks so much for the toturial!!! Really helpful!

  • Your voice tickles my ears ._______.

  • Wowwwww if this what it takes to color in photoshop I would of done this a year ago all this time I thought it was difficult thank you sir this tutorial helped alot!! Now my drawings can be more realistic GIMP is full of shit

  • I was surprised to see this method of creating a transparent layer of inks even works with grey coloring. :)

  • I don't get something. Ok, you separate the lineart from the background, for what purpose exactly? Wouldn't it be easier to just make a new layer in multiply and be done with it? I mean no offense but I don't see the point of all that, please tell me what's the difference exactly.

  • @mimikawaii7386 You can do it the way you say, and it is easier to do. However, the way I do it allows you to color the lines themselves if you should choose to, or change them in any way you like since they are an isolated part of the image. I haven't figured out a way to color the ink lines with any blending mode active without affecting the image in a negative way. It's more of a useful tip for anyone who wants to make use of it, but it's not required.

  • @maglot I see. Also I don't use ink, I work directly in the computer and do the lineart on it aswell. Do you delete the lineart after you paint, btw?

  • @mimikawaii7386 Depends on the picture. I don't, most of the time, since I go for a comic-book style.

  • @maglot thanks for uploading this tutorial.. it really helps alot :))

  • Thank you for the tutorial, this looks like the best colouring tutorial for beginners.

I'd like to ask a question.Somehow in the part where we get rid of our "Background"(4:14), and when I choose "white" from the "Fill" section, my artwork completely dissapears, and there is no copy of artwork I could find in layer 1.Why is taht so.Could you please help? Thanks

  • @cksunar If you didn't fill Layer 1 with black while the selection is on the screen, then you won't have anything there. If you can't figure it out, move your drawing layer to the top and set it's blending mode to Multiply and just have all your color layers beneath it instead.

  • You have an awesome voice.

  • could you please upload that image somewhere so i can try the exact same thing your doing? if possible that would really help, watching and not trying it myself, i don't want that.. thank's for the help >.<

  • can you pls tell me how to get those dark lines that make the picture profound

  • @kokolet123456 I have a tutorial just for that. It's the Ink Optimization one. Check it out.

  • Excellent! I did it, I did it, I did it. Your tutorials rock =)

  • hey i need some help... when i open my picture that i want to color and when i pick a color like red or any color and start coloring its colors only the gray and when i open channels its only 1not like yours 4, and i cant even make a new layer or anything....

  • next thing ya gonna do is an ink tutorial? PLLLLLLEASE! :3

  • @TheCrooper Yeah I can work one up I suppose. Would you like to see one with the thick outlines like in this picture or just normal?

  • @maglot Yeha, thick outlines would be good, or maybe a mix. I didn't thought that I would get an answer THAT fast =D

  • is this on ps cs3?

  • @braigus09 Probably. Not really sure, I did this a long time ago.

  • nice tutorial...it helped me a lot...ive just got my wacom bambo...and for some days ive just started to learn photoshop..good job!

  • WOW! Thanks so much for this tutorial. You really take the time to explain everything. Much appreciated

  • Did you draw directly with the tablet on pc , or you did in paper and then to photoshop?

  • I cannot thank you enough for this wonderful tutorial :) It has been an enormous help to me

  • how did you get your lineart so crisp and thick like that?

  • @NinjaKetsune I use Adobe Illustrator CS3. There's a feature that lets you convert raster art (colored pixel art) to vector art (points of data). It allows you to resize your image without loss of clarity.

  • @maglot not an option of CS2 I take it?

  • @dragames What's not an option? Clue me in please.

  • @maglot sorry, you said something about turning the lineart from a hand ink to vector in illustrator. I have used illustrator CS2, but I don't know exactly how it'd do that without manually taking that annoying ass tool to go over each line yourself. Sorry, I guess I sorta assumed you meant it had an option it'd take a sketch, find black pixels and create it's own path with one tool ^^;

  • @dragames @joFerrowArt You open up your lineart, then click on it to select it. Then at the top there's a button that says "Live Trace". Click on it, then click the button that says "Expand". Then save your image and open it back up in Photoshop. I'm not sure when the feature was incorporated into Illustrator cuz another program by Adobe called Streamline used to be for that. Might have started with CS2 but I'm not sure.

  • @maglot hey maglot thanks for the quick response I really appreciate it. However, I meant to replay to this comment.

What is the function in illustrator you use in illustrator?

  • A wonderfully done tutorial so far, and thank you so much for taking your time to make this generous tutorial. I have been wanting to learn how to color in photoshop for awhile now and I am finally taking the step to learn. Moving onto your next tutorial now, I am very excited to see what my final result from this tutorial will look like in the end on my part. Hopefully not too bad lol. Thanks again

  • hi i am working with Photoshop elements 8 and would like to be able to do what you are doing but i cant find the channels is there an alternative way

  • @Emzzy95 Photoshop Elements does not support the Channels tab. Instead, try putting your drawing on the top layer, and setting the blending mode to "Multiply" and then putting all your color layers below your drawing layer.

  • @maglot Thanks

  • @Emzzy95 maybe you can use "color range" just right click on the picture when you have selected the lasso tool. hope it will work ;)

  • What Photoshop do you have and how much did it cost? And what recording system do you use?

  • @TheLegoElf

Photoshop CS4, although it doesn't matter what version you use from 5 and after. It didn't cost me anything. Arr matey.

I record my vids using Camtasia Studio 6.

  • Thank you! voice was a little wierd, but i don't care! this is what i have spent half an hour looking for!

  • I love your voice, and great tutorial! I'm sure it's helped a lot of people. ^^

  • thanks so much man, best tutorials I've seen on youtube, you explain fully, carefully and slowly. Brilliantly clear advice, thanks! =)

  • How about setting the layer to overlay and place it on the top? it seems to work most of the times. will there be a time that wouldn't work?

  • your voice is really weird!

  • Yeah I was nervous, first video recording and all. I'll probably end up redoing it in the future.

  • @maglot yeah, I know what you mean...the only difference is that when I'm nervous I tend to stutter and do something stupid xD

  • @maglot ude i have an easeir way to transfer the background to layer 1

go to background layer an make a copy (duplicate)

then click the background copy and go to layer mod an select multiple or multiply

then select the origanil background layer and erase all of the lineart

then select any colour an colour your wolf in

    thnx =)

  • @wolflover8012

This is true, however, the reason I do it the way I do is so you can color the pencil/ink lines apart from everything else. You cannot do that using the method you describe.

  • @dreaminglagooon i like his voice!(:

  • ummm...i also have gimp. whitch would u say to use? gimp v.2.8 or photoshop elements 7.4

  • Out of those two, I'd recommend learning to use Gimp, as it has many of the core features Photoshop does and it has the advantage of being free.

  • what version of photoshop do you use?? i have elements 7. is that good for coloring like you? i also have a wacom baboo pen and touch.

  • I use CS4. Elements is a stripped-down affordable version of Photoshop that's mainly used to simply touch up photos, like remove red-eye and stuff. It lacks a lot of features the full version has but I dunno, I guess you could get around with it. Some things are bound to be different/missing though.

  • @maglot oh... how much is cs4? i dont have much money..lol. im 15 and am just now gunna get my 1st job. lol soo...how much isn that? cus cs5 is ALOT of money..

  • @res2wnor well on ebay u can get cs4 for around 400 pounds or 300 ollars i dunno

but its the full version im getting cs3 for 110 pouns of ebay....(i hope lol)

well its not much but its just that im busy

but im pretty sure u can get cs4 for lower prices proberly lowest 300 or 350

    hope i helped =)

  • thank you!!!! this helped A LOT!!!!

  • um i think its the easiest to make 2 new layer right at the start and delete the background layer. Then you just have to draw on the layer on top >_<

  • Hey! This video has been fantastically helpful. Thanks very much!

  • you are so cool for this. thank you so much

  • there i can get samples to color like black lines and white icon....

  • I need your help because i can't see paint bucket anywhere ...(I pressed G and it did not come out)Please help me !!! ;(

  • you have to hold onto it until a list comes up and pick paint bucket

  • can't you just use the magic wand tool, select the white, and then press delete?

Isn't that faster and doesn't it do practically the same thing?

  • You can, but your lines will be surrounded by whiteish/transparent pixels leftover from the background. The wand tool isn't as accurate at separating the colors as the method I use is.

If you're not interested in recoloring the lines later, you can simply put the drawing layer on top of all others, and set it's blending mode to "Multiply".

  • I LOVE you for making this video. I'm a total newbie at photoshop, and you nave no idea how much this helped me out. <3 thank you so much! :)

  • yeah I'm on the new layer, I first copy the blue channel, then invert it, then click the load channel as selected, after that i go to my layers and create a new layer, I then go to my paint bucket and it's on black and click the new layer anywhere like you said and instead of the image kind of looking the same it fills everything. it still looks as if it's inverted thats what the image looks like

  • Wish I knew what was causing that problem. From what you say, you've done everything right so I don't know why it would do that. Maybe if you could take some screenshots or a video, I could help better. Send me a PM with that if you want.

  • Good video, I'm having problems when it comes to adding the new layer, I click the new layer but when i use the paint bucket instead of just making the lines black it colors the whole image, is there anything in my settings that I need to change, my art work is all solid and there is no gaps for the color to leak, I don't know what to do it wont just copy the black lines only, can you please help if possible?

  • Are you sure you switched back to the "Layers" tab? You could still be on the "Channels" tab and just made a new color channel instead. They look similar but they're totally different.

  • ^-^ V thnk yew <3

  • best tutorial ever

i watched the whole tut like 6 times cuz i always forget wat to do every time i need to colour a new pic

  • LMFAO. Auw... That's sad.

  • My version is different! I have Phototshop version 6 for the PC and its very different. I have levels and it falls under layers. Is their any solution at all? :l

  • Photoshop hasn't changed much since I started using it, and I started with version 5. Every pallette can be opened by going to the top of your screen and hitting the "Window" button. Whatever doesn't have a checkmark isn't visible on the screen at the moment, so click it to turn it on.

  • Your voice is so soothing and sexy. @~@

  • That's a new one for me. :P

  • instead of the channels i use the select > color range: fuzziness = some low number, and just click on the white space and it will highlight all the white, and just press delete, just make sure its not a locked layer by double clicking it =3

  • thank you I now things about photoshop i did not .i thank you again

  • Great tutorial, it was very helpful.

One thing that I had to do(Idk if everyone will need to do this as well) but before I could get any of this to work correctly, I had to convert the image from Grayscale to RGB Color.

  • Thank you very much. It was very useful...^^

  • How much do you pay for photoshop?

  • "Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended" runs for $699. Yeah, ouch.

  • man u saved me!!! thank u so much for this one! it's so easy to understand THANK U!!

  • if I could ask, how did you get the base drawing? did you draw it and scan it and digitally ink it, or do you have a tablet?

  • I draw it in pencil on 8 1/2" x 11" computer printing paper, then ink it using tracing paper. I then scan it into Photoshop and will usually use Illustrator to convert the lines to vector art so that they're nice and smooth, but that's another subject entirely.

Also, yes I do have a tablet. I don't draw with it, it feels kind of awkward and unnatural. I mainly use it to color the pictures in.

  • cool. thanks for the response and great tutorials!

  • awsome tutorial really!

  • Now this is how to do a tutorial!

  • hey thanx for this!

  • Ty so much dude!!

  • Don't listen to xSolo, I think you have a really nice voice :D Great tutorial!

  • God bless you! :D

I was sooo lost with photoshop, but this helped more than any other tutorial!

    So Thank you x 10 000!!! : )

  • why dont u just make a new layer, color over it and overlay it...

  • Because stacking multiple layers with the same blending mode will cause unwanted effects, like darkening, lightening, or changing the original color. Another reason is that having your lines on a separate layer will allow you to change the color of the lines as well as having more control over the background.

  • My bad. Next time I'll do it chipmunk style.

  • im so noob.. i cant find the lacking tools where will i can download a CS3 photoshop?!

  • torrent it

  • I have photoshop CS4. Where is the paintbucket and how can I make it show up?

  • Ignore the comment above this one. I figured it out lol :D

  • Scratch that. Occupancy was at 50%. Haha, I'm a n00b.

  • Scratch that. All colors are dimmed. Not just the lines. Maybe I used the paint can tool to white the whole screen before I started. In fact.. I know that's what I did.

  • When I come to the step when it tells me to fill the screen with white, my ink lines brighten to a lighter gray instead of staying black. Is this supposed to happen or what's going on?

  • great tutorial, only thing id suggest is make your drawing available to people so they can test it for them selfs

also i had a problem when it came to the painting even though i had all the colours on sperate layers and all other layers locked , the brush would still paint onto the white of the background

but when you do it it seems to jsut stay in the area where you designated colour

  • what version of photoshop is this?

  • This is Photoshop CS3.

  • For some reason i cannot get out of black and white mode. I had this problem and fixed it but i forgot how...When i choose a light color, it is a light grey, dark color is a dark grey or black. its weird

  • You are probably in Grayscale color mode. Go to "IMAGE - MODE - RGB color". That should fix the problem.

  • I found your tutorials extremely helpful. Thank you.

Although... When going to actually try this myself, I ran into a problem. I'm using Photoshop Elements 6, and I cannot find the 'Channels' tab. I tried looking under the 'Window' tab as well, and it's not there either. I feel really bad having to ask something so seemingly simple, but I'd appreciate the help a great deal.

  • Therein lies your problem. Photoshop Elements is a stripped-down version of Photoshop that is mainly used to quickly touch up photos. That feature probably isn't in there.

However, you might be able to get away with just putting your drawing layer on top of the color layer and setting the blending mode to "Multiply". Just select your drawing layer, then do Ctrl + A to select all, Ctrl + X to cut, and Ctrl + V to paste. You'll end up with a background layer and your drawing on a new layer.

  • Ahh. I see. Well, I'll give that a try then. Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it.

  • i havent got photoshop but i want it!

  • very helpful, thanks you guy :D

  • So, THAT'S how you ink! TY. This has been the most helpful thing YouTube has ever shown me to date. :D

  • thanks dude, i had been trying to figure out how the hell to color lol

  • same here ahha, i wish photoshop actually had tutorials built in ahha

  • Very Helpful :)
