Johnny set the slide bar way high with Highway 61 from Captured Live. There is no best but I can say I saw Duane Allman (twice) and tried to stay awake. I saw Johnny (twice) and came out with my hair standing up. Its a matter of personal taste. My brother is a Duane/Derek fan.
I saw JW at the Paramount Theater in Briston TN/VA around 1993-94, sat fairly close to the stage, it was good n' loud ! Music man amps, two of them 4 x10's and crankin. The guy sitting next to me looked like a mountain man, he poked me in the ribs and said "i'm goin outside to git me some AIR, you know what I mean man, some AIR"
Johhny Winter is the "vice president" of the slide style guitar! The President slot HAS to go to DEREK TRUCKS! Too bad that Duane is dead because he was THE BEST EVER!

On December 24,2006 at 8 o’clock in the morning, a young 14 year old boy by the name of Scott Jackson was found dead.Doctors couldn’t come up with the cause of his death. His mother checked his emails to see if she could figure out what happened.Turns out he was still signed into myspace. She found he had gone to sleep after he read and didn’t repost a chain letter.if you don’t repost this to 6 videos a girl with no face will kill you tonight. sorry don’t wanna die
I'm white but I have to say, white blues players are always all about ego in their playing, rather than soul. White people can play jazz fine as that is a more intellectual exercise, but they never really get that guttural essence of the blues.
that phrases was taken from the writeups johnnys "progresive blues experiment" album..my dad still keep the album.in this album,.johnny was indeed became the guitar
"before the session there was johnny and his guitar, during the session ,johnny became the guitar"...does anyone remember from where i extract these phrases...:)
Why are there only two clips of this concert available? Anyone knows if I can find the whole gig somewhere? I keep on playing this and 'Stranger Blues', but sure would like to see more from barcelona 1991. What a performance... Triple AAA
Warren Haynes would eat Johnny winter alive?!?!?! Not in the fucking least !!! Yes Warren is good, damned good but these two are different enough in their styles that in all honesty it's not fair to compare them. Let's just enjoy them!
@lophatmike - I think Warren Haynes could eat Johnny Winter alive literally, but never musically! Warren's gotta think about eating more vegetables and less eclairs and pie!
Damn.....That sounds almost good enough to be done by a Black man.......No one beats a black man when it comes to the blues!!!!!!!!!!!....and I am white
Jesus Christ! This guy was amazing. I know he is still alive and in bad health, though, and it's really sad, but holy sheet! I am glad there is a record of what he can do.
I saw Johnny somewhere in the early 90's at Great Woods (Ma.). He was part of a festival where he was the #2 artist with Stevie Ray Vaughn was the headliner. I will say one thing about Johnny's set and that it he sound man sucked. He played his guitar with so much gain that all you heard was a wall of noise, you did not hear a single note. I mean really,,, it was nothing but a wall of white noise. Pissed me off along with eveyrbody around me. I hope he fired that sound man after the show
this is how you play ballsey guitar.aw shit! don't get me started on today's untalented bozo's! johnny kicked ass every single night!!!! real musician right here man!
In this specific type of playing, Buddy Guy and George Thoroughgood are also very skilled, but only Johnny Winter has been able to somehow channel 1930s blues one moment and 1990s blues the next. It's almost scary how quickly he's able to be in two places at once like that. Maybe some albinos are also warlocks!
I had the ultimate pleasure of getting drunk with Johnny while watching James Cotton at the bottom line in New York. They were all in NY to record the Hard Again record. That is my finest Blues experience ever, except for the time I partied with the James Cotton band w/Matt Murphy in Worcester. James Cotton was so messed up he rolled down the stairs at Sir Morgans Cove. He got up and laughed his ass off. The beauty of the Blues is it's so personal.
You never can tell who is the best, there are a few very good (blues)guitar pickers. SRV, BB.King, A.King, EC, etc, evereybody got his own stylle,, i'm really impressed by the raw/rocking sound of Johnny Winter. In Surf you got Hank Marvin, Nokia Edwards, Dick Dale, etc, who's the best, they're all very good !! keep rockin' !!
This was Johnny at his best - Tom Compton on drums, Jeff Ganz on bass - a solid trio. Johnny's phrasing is incredible - he covers so much it's like a master's class. But wait, if his guitar playing isn't enough to secure him his own room at the Hall of Fame what about his singing? If Johnny never picked up a guitar we would have to take him seriously. He's a National Treasure. Get busy, Cleveland.
@17lio I am totally agree with you all the songs of "3rd degree" could be in a best of JW.
JW plays blues at a intensity and quality that is unique, by the way no many people can cover an exact solo, note by note, because he has a unique playing guitar very difficult to approach.
For example I very love SRV songs but SRV solos can be covered with work ( a lot sure) , but good luck for playing JW solos :)
of JW my best trio bluesmen are JW, SRV and Buddy Guy
I've always loved how he is so effortlessly ON THE GROOVE. Not only is his slide playing as fiery as molten lava, his pacing and cadence never falters...
Johnny Winter / great blues guitarist / great rockin roll guitarist / greatest electric slide guitarist ever / greatest acoustic slide guitarist ever / distinctive one of kind voice. The real deal. STILL ALIVE AND WELL.
The amazing thing about Johnny is that he has mastered every aspect of the blues idiom - he can play hard rocking far out licks or low down and simple country or steel slite or finger pickin' all with the same wreckless abandon and mind blowing technique - he's got complete master of the instrument.
In heaven, there will be many bands. Every band will be asking for Johnny as lead guitarist. Hendrix and Vaughan will need some one to clown around with and have few laughs with. THEN, they will strap up, ask Muddy to sing, and burn a brand new form of hell for all us fans of loud burning blistering whip-it-like-you mean it rock and roll that all eternity has never seen. In the mean time, Johnny is still doing that here!
@Rolco64 aww... you be breaking my heart. how nice of you. that really hit me. i'm just a kid guitar player from detroit....and thank you so much. you are so kind. you are probably a very nice person.
@grga888 hell yeah.... if i could be Jimmy or Stevie and they asked me who I wanted for a backing guitarist, the first thing I would ask, "Is Johnny or Keith here yet?"
@grga888 Johnny Winter doesn't have to play backing guitar for anybody dead or alive. He can more than hold his own against any player any time in history. Most can't hang with him anyway. He's pretty much in a class of his own.
@rockinredneck57 A-fucking-men. Johnny smokes 'em all. A TRUE blues player, not a commercial blues player. Johnny doesn't have to back anybody up BUT have you heard his rhythm stylings? Oh my God he's smooth.
@vectortemple I don't think that is a fair statement. There is so many other blues artists that there is no possible way to pick a "Best" player. In my mind if you are legitimately playing the blues because you love the music then you are amazing.
@nekamamen Nothing mysterious about Johnny's tone. Buy a Gibson Firebird, a Boss CE-2 Chorus pedal, and a Music Man HD-130 with 4x10 speakers. Volume on 10, treble on 10, bass on 0, master volume on 10, no reverb. I read that Johnny has his Music Mans modified by a fellow named Matt Wells someplace in New York. Other than that, I think you're 95% of the way there. You may thank me later. Good luck...
@ZiggZagger420 ... settle down now, I know we are praising Johnny, but...
SRV is not a joke, check out the video of SRV "live in Austin" from the series
"Austin city limits" it shows him in the beginning, in 1983... sweaty & nervous, but layin it down, and then his last performance there in 1989.... confident & powerful..... a truly AMAZING performance, a must see!!!
Listen to this; do y're pity little selves a $50 favor and buy the Johnny Winter Live Bootleg Series Vol 1-4 CD's, listen to these and you instantly know why you shouldn't have left a negative comment. Johnny Winter is a livin' legend, outplays and outlives 'em all.
Goddamn!!!! Just listen to that fuck'n tone right at the start!!! Its soooo Texan!!! Its so damn unique!!! Its amazing to me!!!! Its an animal all its own. No one, I mean NO ONE had that sound before Johnny did!!!!
