  • I hear johnny and my foot starts tapping and my arm is searching for a glass of guiness and a shot of whiskey!

  • Johnny set the slide bar way high with Highway 61 from Captured Live. There is no best but I can say I saw Duane Allman (twice) and tried to stay awake. I saw Johnny (twice) and came out with my hair standing up. Its a matter of personal taste. My brother is a Duane/Derek fan.

  • @bopalena ... We never see a fish eating a whale ...

  • My three favorite slide guitarists are: Duane Allman, Rory Gallagher and Johnny Winter. In no particular order.

  • @Tessmage Good call

  • Good old Texas blues!!

  • I saw JW at the Paramount Theater in Briston TN/VA around 1993-94, sat fairly close to the stage, it was good n' loud ! Music man amps, two of them 4 x10's and crankin. The guy sitting next to me looked like a mountain man, he poked me in the ribs and said "i'm goin outside to git me some AIR, you know what I mean man, some AIR"

  • This is sick!! Godzilla guitar man...

  • Johhny Winter is the "vice president" of the slide style guitar! The President slot HAS to go to DEREK TRUCKS! Too bad that Duane is dead because he was THE BEST EVER!

  • This one is a classic.

  • HOLY FUCK!!!!!! THIS GOES SO FUCKIN HARD!!!!!

  • meant to say two weeks ago

  • this is my fav guitar player got to see him bout two weeksplay this very song an will never forgot it after the show i got to say wat up to him and got his autogragh i kno he gettin older but he still got it with out a dout

  • Tremendous.

  • I'm white but I have to say, white blues players are always all about ego in their playing, rather than soul. White people can play jazz fine as that is a more intellectual exercise, but they never really get that guttural essence of the blues.

  • Got to see Johnny just a few hours ago! I was a bit sad I couldn't make the rest of the show though

  • I should have miss something but.... where the hell is the bassist????

  • that phrases was taken from the writeups johnnys "progresive blues experiment" album..my dad still keep the album.in this album,.johnny was indeed became the guitar

  • His voice is great !!!

  • "before the session there was johnny and his guitar, during the session ,johnny became the guitar"...does anyone remember from where i extract these phrases...:)

  • @mrsamomar Liner notes from one of the Alligator LP´s he did. Perhaps "Guitar Slinger"?

  • @mrsamomar the progressive blue experiment on imperial records

  • @mrsamomar I think it was the liner notes for "The Progressive Blues Experiment'

  • in my opinion ,johnny is the best slide guitarist in term of speed, varieties and melodies..above all...he can slide and riff all night long....

  • @izzat10 True in every sense!

  • @izzat10 have you ever listened to jack white?

  • @izzat10 Eric Sardinas is to good to. Listen Him.

  • @izzat10 Dunno, I'd rate Duane Allman as (well, was) the best slide out there...

  • "The video was not added. You already have the 1842 favorite videos, - the maximum allowable quantity."

    Cmon now Youtube!! :(

  • Why are there only two clips of this concert available? Anyone knows if I can find the whole gig somewhere? I keep on playing this and 'Stranger Blues', but sure would like to see more from barcelona 1991. What a performance... Triple AAA

  • Probably the best slide guitarist since Elmore James....

  • sound's a little like SVR

  • @WhiteOfir It's because SRV loved Johnny Winter.

  • Warren Haynes would eat Johnny winter alive?!?!?! Not in the fucking least !!! Yes Warren is good, damned good but these two are different enough in their styles that in all honesty it's not fair to compare them. Let's just enjoy them!

  • @lophatmike thats like sayin yngwie malmsteen would destroy robert johnson, you cant compare

  • @lophatmike duane allman barfed them..

  • @lophatmike - I think Warren Haynes could eat Johnny Winter alive literally, but never musically! Warren's gotta think about eating more vegetables and less eclairs and pie!

  • Johnny is great but Warren Haynes would eat him alive.

  • okay... let's be realistic... Johnny is God. We all know it.. at least, those of us with a brain and ears.

  • Tone tone tone......God Almighty what tone. I have GOT to get a Firebird.......

  • master

  • It just doesn't get any dirtier or nastier than Johnny. The guy is the best.

  • The father of Blues/Rock he is, no one has ever credited him for that.

  • Damn.....That sounds almost good enough to be done by a Black man.......No one beats a black man when it comes to the blues!!!!!!!!!!!....and I am white

  • @teden20 Geez, after hearing about Gary Moore, you nearly had me worried about Johnny Winter sayin' stuff like that.

  • Awesome.. can't get better than that kind of slide guitar,,and Johnny Winter is dynamite

  • Anyone who thinks Thorogood is a better slide player than Johnny Winter is certifiably insane.....

  • Comment removed

  • @truthseeker1164 AMEN!

  • It sucks that there doesn't exist a Johnny Winter video of "Hustled Down In Texas"... only one of the best solos ever

  • I've listened to him... Jammed with him... jammed with many others... but... no one can wind it up like Johnny! Take my word...

  • <3<3<3

  • My daughter, Danielle is opening for him on Saturday, night in Fall River. What an honor!!!

  • yes i københavn his great everytime

  • Jesus Christ! This guy was amazing. I know he is still alive and in bad health, though, and it's really sad, but holy sheet! I am glad there is a record of what he can do.

  • HIGH AS A GEORGA PINE!

  • That just may be the greasiest guitar tone I have EVER heard. Wow!

  • I saw Johnny somewhere in the early 90's at Great Woods (Ma.). He was part of a festival where he was the #2 artist with Stevie Ray Vaughn was the headliner. I will say one thing about Johnny's set and that it he sound man sucked. He played his guitar with so much gain that all you heard was a wall of noise, you did not hear a single note. I mean really,,, it was nothing but a wall of white noise. Pissed me off along with eveyrbody around me. I hope he fired that sound man after the show

  • i saw him last night in Denmark. he is more dead than alive, but oh my... that man can play

  • Who needs coke (a cola) when ya can have the real thing! This is so good!

  • smok'in slide

  • Is this show available on DVD?

  • what's the tuning of his guitar on this song?

  • this is how you play ballsey guitar.aw shit! don't get me started on today's untalented bozo's! johnny kicked ass every single night!!!! real musician right here man!

  • My god this "Slide" !!

  • True blues!

  • animalito

  • In this specific type of playing, Buddy Guy and George Thoroughgood are also very skilled, but only Johnny Winter has been able to somehow channel 1930s blues one moment and 1990s blues the next. It's almost scary how quickly he's able to be in two places at once like that. Maybe some albinos are also warlocks!

  • I had the ultimate pleasure of getting drunk with Johnny while watching James Cotton at the bottom line in New York. They were all in NY to record the Hard Again record. That is my finest Blues experience ever, except for the time I partied with the James Cotton band w/Matt Murphy in Worcester. James Cotton was so messed up he rolled down the stairs at Sir Morgans Cove. He got up and laughed his ass off. The beauty of the Blues is it's so personal.

  • Love Stevie but Johnny's the Man !

  • none better

  • Lord. Have Mercy! That man can sing!!!

  • i saw this song live yesterday!!!! He definly hasnt lost any guitar skill haha

  • YEAH

  • You never can tell who is the best, there are a few very good (blues)guitar pickers. SRV, BB.King, A.King, EC, etc, evereybody got his own stylle,, i'm really impressed by the raw/rocking sound of Johnny Winter. In Surf you got Hank Marvin, Nokia Edwards, Dick Dale, etc, who's the best, they're all very good !! keep rockin' !!

  • This was Johnny at his best - Tom Compton on drums, Jeff Ganz on bass - a solid trio. Johnny's phrasing is incredible - he covers so much it's like a master's class. But wait, if his guitar playing isn't enough to secure him his own room at the Hall of Fame what about his singing? If Johnny never picked up a guitar we would have to take him seriously. He's a National Treasure. Get busy, Cleveland.

  • "3rd degree" is the best slide guitar album I've ever heard.

    Johnny rules

  • @17lio I am totally agree with you all the songs of "3rd degree" could be in a best of JW.

JW plays blues at a intensity and quality that is unique, by the way no many people can cover an exact solo, note by note, because he has a unique playing guitar very difficult to approach.

For example I very love SRV songs but SRV solos can be covered with work ( a lot sure) , but good luck for playing JW solos :)

of JW my best trio bluesmen are JW, SRV and Buddy Guy

  • EL MÁS GRANDE DE TODOS!!!

  • vean blues de santa fe pappo

    arriba johnny!!!

  • Pappo and Johnny the best blues guitarist

  • This is fantastic. The Blues.

    Thank you for the listing.

  • heyy there blues guys. u should check my new blues song its got a brontosaurus wail in it ;)

  • fuckin' aye. fuckn' aye....fucxkin aye! this is the way.... this is the way ....it is done.

  • The man!

  • In which tuning is the guitar? Open E??

  • In which tuning is the guitar? Open E??

  • LONG LIFE FOR THE KING...

  • He isnt the best blues guitarist of all times but is one of the best

  • I've always loved how he is so effortlessly ON THE GROOVE. Not only is his slide playing as fiery as molten lava, his pacing and cadence never falters...

  • Johnny Winter / great blues guitarist / great rockin roll guitarist / greatest electric slide guitarist ever / greatest acoustic slide guitarist ever / distinctive one of kind voice. The real deal. STILL ALIVE AND WELL.

  • The amazing thing about Johnny is that he has mastered every aspect of the blues idiom - he can play hard rocking far out licks or low down and simple country or steel slite or finger pickin' all with the same wreckless abandon and mind blowing technique - he's got complete master of the instrument.

  • I saw him today in Lille (France). Magical concert. He player this song with his same Gibson firebird. Amazing !!!

  • The guy is amazing. He's hitting notes that aren't even there.

  • @Bopalena - there not there for you and me.... for Johnny they seem to be there.... LOL

  • @Bopalena remindes me of the one the chic says oh look hr has his magic guitar thats beautiful

  • In heaven, there will be many bands. Every band will be asking for Johnny as lead guitarist. Hendrix and Vaughan will need some one to clown around with and have few laughs with. THEN, they will strap up, ask Muddy to sing, and burn a brand new form of hell for all us fans of loud burning blistering whip-it-like-you mean it rock and roll that all eternity has never seen. In the mean time, Johnny is still doing that here!

  • Good Lord teden20! You should be writing for Rolling Stone! That was some awesome writing. Thanks!

  • @Rolco64 aww... you be breaking my heart. how nice of you. that really hit me. i'm just a kid guitar player from detroit....and thank you so much. you are so kind. you are probably a very nice person.

  • True!

  • One of the best.

  • @MeanGuitarist ooh so true no one will even attempt his style for commercial gain johnney did it thank god for the 70s,peace

  • @teden20 Hendrix and Vaughan would be perfect lead guitarists where Johnny would be a great backing guitar player.

  • @grga888 hell yeah.... if i could be Jimmy or Stevie and they asked me who I wanted for a backing guitarist, the first thing I would ask, "Is Johnny or Keith here yet?"

  • @grga888 Johnny Winter doesn't have to play backing guitar for anybody dead or alive. He can more than hold his own against any player any time in history. Most can't hang with him anyway. He's pretty much in a class of his own.

  • @rockinredneck57 A-fucking-men. Johnny smokes 'em all. A TRUE blues player, not a commercial blues player. Johnny doesn't have to back anybody up BUT have you heard his rhythm stylings? Oh my God he's smooth.

  • @teden20 Just the thought of that made my week...Well done.

  • @teden20 right on man.

  • @teden20 Hell yes!!! Great comment!!!!!!

  • @teden20 You got it in one, man!!

  • @teden20

    sadly hes not anymore:(

  • Tone! Tone! Tone! Johnny Winter is living proof that Voodo does exist!

  • Arguably the greatest blues player in recorded history.

  • Well said!

  • @vectortemple I don't think that is a fair statement. There is so many other blues artists that there is no possible way to pick a "Best" player. In my mind if you are legitimately playing the blues because you love the music then you are amazing.

  • @BamBam00008 there is always a best! ... and Johnny gets my vote... don't be so damned democratic:0)

  • @CammJamm69 .....Amen he is my favorite hands down!

  • Oh yeah, I'm rocking now. I don't know of anyone who can beat him. Thanks for posting this. Awesome playing.

  • I agree!

  • One of the or maybe the best slide guitarist in the world.

  • GO!!JOHNNY!!!GO!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I would sell my wife for that tone...

  • careful she will sell you for everything you own ha ha

  • @nekamamen all you need is a Firebird Reverse and a good old Fender amp (he uses Musicman, its a Fender), and then you are golden baby!

  • @nekamamen The tone is yours -keep the wife

  • Comment removed

  • @nekamamen sorry pal, cant be much of a wife then. i wouldn´t sell my wife for anything....

  • @nekamamen Nothing mysterious about Johnny's tone. Buy a Gibson Firebird, a Boss CE-2 Chorus pedal, and a Music Man HD-130 with 4x10 speakers. Volume on 10, treble on 10, bass on 0, master volume on 10, no reverb. I read that Johnny has his Music Mans modified by a fellow named Matt Wells someplace in New York. Other than that, I think you're 95% of the way there. You may thank me later. Good luck...

  • Best version yet in total scope

  • Try Statesbro blues by Taj Mahal--sounds same as this!!!!!!

  • ya thats kind of true but if you love blues...its all good

  • @longboarder1960 forever the best.....SRV is a joke

  • @ZiggZagger420 ... settle down now, I know we are praising Johnny, but...

SRV is not a joke, check out the video of SRV "live in Austin" from the series

"Austin city limits" it shows him in the beginning, in 1983... sweaty & nervous, but layin it down, and then his last performance there in 1989.... confident & powerful..... a truly AMAZING performance, a must see!!!

  • @longboarder1960 what about stevie ray vaughan, muddy waters, bb king and albert king?

  • @MrBucketheadFan ... what about them?

They are ALL GREAT blues axe men, so is ...

Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck & Eric Clapton.

    I still like Johhny best!

  • @longboarder1960 meh...

  • @longboarder1960 Well...I'm not sure if I could agree with you 100%, but I'd definitely say that as far as electric slide goes, nobody touches him.

  • @longboarder1960 I would have to agree, nobody quite like him.

  • @longboarder1960 AFTER BB KING

  • might be right crazysailorman

  • Pure slide perfection from one of the all time best players. Many years of great music.
